Love when dh (we think) had covid in March, he lost his sense of taste. My choice for Mother's Day food was a delivery from a local curry house and he couldn't tell the difference between any of them! Found it again quite quickly I think.
Had a productive day yesterday. Grocery shop £100, Christmas alcohol £35. It's dd's 16th birthday today so it's waffles with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast, HM pizza for tea & a 3 layer carrot cake. Just waiting for last present to arrive today, checked just now & it should be delivered today. Have got her a weighted blanket, a pair of earrings, an academic planner/diary and a reed diffuser. It's always the same, once her birthday is out of the way, Christmas planning can properly start.
Feeling glum about the tier system as we seem to be expecting tier 3 despite the rate having almost halved here in 3 weeks. How pubs & restaurants with really good measures in place are deemed more risky than crowded shops & supermarkets with apparently few measures in place is beyond me.

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/11/2020 06:46

I've not looked at where we are. I'm expecting 3 here though.
Happy birthday North dd

Very stressed about money. We have to pay higher rate stamp duty which will wipe our savings. Stupid lack of proper maths.
Is only short term but will need every penny.
Sorry first world problem I know but it's keeping me awake.

Wolfcub · 24/11/2020 07:08

Happy birthday North's dd CakeThanks

Wolfcub · 24/11/2020 07:19

Ah Life that's a big and legitimate worry, you've planned for one thing and are faced with another. Fingers crossed the sale of your house happens soon and you can start to recoup

northender · 24/11/2020 07:48

Oh no life that's a real worry

maddenlightfoot · 24/11/2020 08:03

Life we realised yesterday that we're moving from Band A council tax to at least Band D, maybe E if it's recalculated after sale 😱. We just hadn't factored it in as a cost.

Happierwithouthim · 24/11/2020 08:24

life how horrible, does that put the renovation work out of the question?

madden will that be a huge difference in bands. My property tax will be the same band as my previous home.

I just spend €25.77 on cloud10 beauty. I wanted to get Trilogy rosehip oil for my burn scars. They had an offer buy two trilogy products get their cleanse off set free, but one of the products I bought was the rosehip oil which includes a free gift of a lipgloss, all of the products were reduced so €38.90 worth plus the lipgloss and a facemask to bring it up to free delivery

I'm between minds for my new room, assuming house goes through of buying a dressing table or getting a high stool and mirror and painting my old kitchen console table instead. I'll figure all these things out when I'm in the house!

Flexing my frugal arm. Download cash back to supermarket vouchers. Selling my old old shares. Going through budget

Bornlazy · 24/11/2020 21:57

Payday on Thursday and still have some money left in account however still have ds's main presents to buy. Me and DH are getting new phones so possibly no upfront cost there.

Life that's shit about the stamp duty. It's horrible when we miscalculate.

Love hope the rest of you are you all feeling ok.

north happy birthday to your dd 🎂

lifelongfrugaleer · 25/11/2020 06:45

We should get the stamp duty refunded when this sells.
No reason to spend now until payday. Maybe fruit might be needed

Happierwithouthim · 25/11/2020 08:49

Went to Aldi with dc, we really just wanted their pepperami and pink lady apples €65 later I left.

They had a stand for cooking 4 pizzas together, I have been thinking about something like this for a while because the base of our homemade pizzas are soft. It was €10.81.

The dc spent some pocket money, got some treats for toy show night. Dd got some vitamins, I've got enough vitamins for them for 5/6 months already! She doesn't ask for much so I conceded.

I got prawns to add to my seafood mix for seafood pasta, plus cream, plus fresh pasta, could've used the creme fraiche and regular pasta at home. It was lush though Grin Their red lentils were 79c, couldn't leave them behind either. My dunnes voucher is valid until Dec 5th so I might skip a big shop this weekend/early next week.

life Sad

Morning everyone 😀
Life that is excellent re the stamp duty refund l hope it makes a massive difference to your moving. God knows there is enough strain on ppl when moving without having to deal with things like this . 💐
Just off to MumBobs, have a lovely day everyone 😀

Laska2Meryls · 25/11/2020 09:02

Im just jumping back in again!!.. No real news though. Really fed up about not being able to go anywhere ( as is everyone I am sure) ..
I have been quite successful at avoiding Amazon Christmas buying, ( which was a goal this year) but one thing that I have found is dome very varied delivery costs and timing.. I do get annoyed at people ramping up delivery to where I am ( IOW) , its really no more expensive, we get normal post office and have all the national couriers.. next day delivery and all..!!

ememem84 · 25/11/2020 09:30

excitement here. I've just had my very first online supermarket delivery (since i was a student in southampton).

coop have just started doing the online delivery here. its £5 per delivery and only next day for now. but its an absolute game changer for us. so so convenient. and i don't worry about the delivery charge as it buys me time.

Laska2Meryls · 25/11/2020 12:27

Thats great Em..
Do you have red squirrels in Jersey? I have just been watching some here collecting acorns off our trees and burying them. Now I know why we keep getting oak saplings appear in our back lawn!

Tightwad2020 · 25/11/2020 12:28

Hello, can I join? I've been taking a long hard look at my budget and spending this year, and going through old MN Credit Crunch threads to take advantage of the collective wisdom of the hive brain to get frugal tips.

It is very motivating and encouraging! I had already adopted many of the good habits mentioned (Aldi shopping, meal planning, switching
energy and insurance providers regularly, bearing down hard on discretionary spending,) but there's always new ideas here. Just in the last couple of weeks I've changed my phone contract to SIM only, saving about £12 a month, started cutting a helping or two out of meals for the freezer to make the food budget stretch, and - just this morning - been inspired to email various hairdressing and beauty colleges to see if they offer discounted prices for practice models.

My targets for 2021 are:
pay off £4800 on 0% credit card (loan to pay college course fees for eldest) - i.e. £400 pcm
save £500 - £700 per month to build up personal slush fund
save enough money out of the joint housekeeping account to pay for a slice of redecorating in February, another chunk in July and build up boiler replacement fund for this time next year.

My new frugal behaviours in 2021 on top of the ones I already have, will be:

  • no new clothes for self (2019 was pretty sparse on new things, but I did replace a coat, a jumper, some underwear and buy a couple of new pairs of shoes this year - so I think I"m done for 2021 - unless I see unmissably bargainous new boots, in which case I shall beg as a birthday present)
  • replace salon visits for cut and colour with hairdresser college
  • halve my contact lens costs by wearing my glasses every other day.
ememem84 · 25/11/2020 13:26

yes - red squirrels! they are so good! I love them! Smile

seriously i'm so excited about my online shop. i've told loads of people to share the knowledge.

Happierwithouthim · 25/11/2020 13:48

Welcome tightwad love the username btw. Sounds like you've got great habits in place already.
