Anyway sorry to take over ( after being away so long) with van tips.. !!

SnugglySnerd · 30/10/2020 10:13

We are making gingerbread zombies today too! The camper is fabulous!

Taytocrisps · 30/10/2020 10:31

Morning. We had a cosy evening last night - lit the fire, played 'Game of Life' and watched 'Steel Magnolias' on Netflix. The soup turned out fine but was a tad garlicky - let's just say I won't have to worry about vampires this Hallowe'en Halloween Smile. I'll only use half the garlic next time.

It was the most awful night here - wet and windy - so I left my recycling bin until this morning. I got up early and sorted out my recycling and put it out. Just hope I didn't miss the bin lorry now.

DD is going to her best friend's birthday party today, but it's just a small gathering in her friend's back garden - five friends including birthday girl. Strictly speaking it's against the rules (nobody is allowed in your garden) but I'm saying nothing and letting her go. She's had a very dull week off school. And I know the birthday girl's Mam will be strict about social distancing etc. This headline on the news this morning caught my eye www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/1030/1174827-coronavirus-retail/. Madness!

I was going to make a start on Christmas shopping this week but it's coming to the end of the month and I've had to order home heating oil (€230 for a half-tank). I also have to pay for DCat1's op next week (est. €400). So I'll hold off until pay day rolls around on the 5th. I made a list of who I've to buy for and I've put in suggestions for everyone. So I feel a bit more organized. I already have half of DD's present bought - concert ticket and XBox game. DD really missed Penneys when it came to buying presents for her friends - cheap things like slipper socks etc. She had to make do with the local pharmacy (body lotions) and Centra (tubs of Pringles and fruit pastilles and smarties etc.). She didn't want to wait until December when the non-essential shops re-open. In any case, the shops will probably be mobbed for the first few days.

Happier I'm sorry Ex is being such an arsehole although I shouldn't be surprised, given his past behaviour. It's your DD who will suffer if he withholds the braces money, not you. I'd like to think he wouldn't punish the kids by holding onto their presents, but who knows? If you can afford it, I'd be inclined to pick up a few things that can be returned if not needed. Your DC sound very kind but it's sad to think they're afraid of him and won't disagree with him in case he gets mad at them. Good saving on your Dunnes shopping.

em coffee (in a cafe) and Christmas shopping sounds like something from another lifetime! I'm also jealous of your day in London Camden. I caught a tiny bit of 'Haunting of Hill House' on Gogglebox - it was terrifying! DD and I were hiding behind cushions. I'm a wuss when it comes to scary stuff though.

Wolf I hear you on the bottle bank of shame. Whenever I've a workman in, I suddenly realize my glass recycling box is full of wine bottles Blush. I have to refrain from babbling, "Oh, I really must take a trip to the bottle bank soon". I wouldn't mind but half the time, I have a generous glass of wine on a Saturday night and then forget the bottle is there and end up throwing out two thirds of a bottle of wine. It's quite wasteful so I'm not buying any more wine until Christmas - I'm literally pouring money down the sink.

north lovely work with your crocheting

@Laska2Meryls how lovely to see you again and to know that life is going well for you. Priscilla is fab - wishing you many years of happy travelling in her. Are you planning to stick to the UK or travel further afield? When Covid is over, obviously.

Laska2Meryls · 30/10/2020 13:28

Ginger zombies and vampire bats .. weve been having fun!

Cwmbran Town was mental, queues everywhere for every shop l went into .l have no idea why and l didn't stay there because l was afraid of catching the virus tbh with so many ppl in situ and standing all together. So we took flowers to my Beloved friend's memorial there and tried all the shops but decided to come home instead. It was much better here bought everything l wanted thankfully .
Laska love your camper ! Those bikkies are amazing ! Smile

SnugglySnerd · 30/10/2020 16:59

Wow Laska your ginger zombies are better than ours. I let the dts decorate them! they had fun though which is the main thing.

Bloody hell Happier l would be going mad !

Wolfcub · 30/10/2020 21:03

Girlie how are you and dd doing?

ememem84 · 30/10/2020 22:35

It’s been a long day. Zero sleep for me last night. I’ve just finished hill house. Man it was intense. And sad.

Dh is in with dd. I’ve made him. Because I’m exhausted.

Spends today:

£126 zoo membership. I’m taking ds and Dd on Sunday for a play date. Dh is swerving it. I figured it actually made sense to get family
Membership for us as we have to pay for ds now. For me to get in its £18. For ds now it’s £10. So for all of us almost £50 a go and consequently we don’t go often. Dd is free until she’s three.

It is fab and it’s nice to just be able to go for a play or a walk or just to see one animal. And not feel like we have to stay for ages because it cost a fortune.

northender · 31/10/2020 07:26

Hey Laska good to see you. Glad you got the camper.
Happier what a lovely note from your dd. Is your soup a chunky one or smooth?
Tayto the game and film night sounds lovely & it's definitely soup time now
Hope you enjoyed your boat trip Madden
Did you get a restaurant sorted for last night wolf? Once the games console genie is out of the bottle, it's out. Ds is currently saving for a PS5....
Mrs I know exactly what you mean about not always feeling safe if there are lots of people around, glad you got what you needed elsewhere.
Em the zoo membership sounds like a really good idea
unescorted so glad you got the quilt done for dd. Pic??
Are you feeling better born? I have no idea about tension in the crochet, I think it's quite loose, but seems to be consistent, we'll see!
Now definitely doesn't feel like the time for gaps in your cupboards life. Groceries won't be that much of a hassle in the grand scheme of things when you move.
Love the idea of all the gingerbread zombies around!

Had a good drive back on Thursday so had a catch up day yesterday. Did shopping for dparents but still need to do ours today. Dh has ordered some IT kit for wfh which he can claim back. The best bit is an adjustable height monitor so he can connect the laptop to it but evenings we can use it for the PC.
Have been doing some Christmas shopping research, so will get cracking now. Unusually, have got plenty of ideas for ds, not things he'll be expecting either which is good. He prefers to have presents to open from us at Christmas, but is fine with money on his birthday. Dd is usually easy to buy for, but I'm finding it trickier this year. To be fair, neither of them have ever been high maintenance in terms of present lists & usually just leave us to it. I've got Ds a cocktail making set so far (shaker, measures etc). Dd has her birthday at the end of November which makes it harder having to think of more ideas in a very short space of time.

Unescorted · 31/10/2020 08:25

North no pic - I was struggling to get it finished in time.

I so hope the babies are allowed home for Christmas. Last week DD's college cancelled all visitors and b/c of the 6 day teaching week they can't come home during term time. Sad

Taytocrisps · 31/10/2020 08:30

Morning. Storm Aiden woke me at 6.30 plus I needed to pee. I haven't been able to get back to sleep since. I made a cuppa and got back into bed. DCat1 was a bit restless earlier. I think he wanted to go out but when I opened the window for him, he changed his mind. He's currently sitting at the end of my bed having a snooze. I guess the emergency services will be happy with the weather because it means Hallowe'en will be a damp squib - no dangerous bonfires for them to tackle. And it should put off any diehard trick or treaters.

I've to pop down to the shop later to pick up DD's new school coat - the shop is closed but they're opening for me at 1.30. Also need to get something for dinner. I didn't plan that very well. Maybe the weather will ease a bit by then?

I had a long video call with a friend last night. We were chatting for two and a half hours. It was great to have a catch up.

Boring day ahead - housework today and Netflix this evening.

Laska I love the cookies

em hope you caught up on sleep. The zoo membership makes perfect sense.

north hope your Christmas shopping goes well. Are you doing it all online?

DCat2 has just jumped up on my bed. I feel like Fraulein Maria in 'The Sound of Music'. Except I've cats on my bed instead of kids. Anyone up for a verse of 'These are a few of my favourite things'?

SnugglySnerd · 31/10/2020 09:34

I agree about the zoo membership Em. We have membership to a couple of things (one is local, other is NT) and with little ones it means we n go there often but just stay for an hour or two without feeling like we're wasting money. We haven't been able to use the local one this year much as it has been closed since lockdown and only partially reopened but they have extended the membership for another 6 months. NT we have used loads this summer and autumn. At least once a week to go for a run around the lovely grounds.

Wolfcub · 31/10/2020 09:40

Totally agree re memberships. When we were really completely and utterly broke we used to ask for them for Xmas so we could guarantee that we could do a couple of nice things with ds during that year

North we went for afternoon tea which was nice and ds was pleased so that was a win

Re crochet tension I'm also useless at this. It comes out how it comes out. I'd be hopeless at amirigumi (sp?) although I'd love to be able to do it

Tayto not good being woken by storms, I had shouting and what I assume was fox cub yipping about 4am

I think a quiet day watching rugby is on the cards. Also some cleaning and washing. Really struggling to keep up as I can't get things dry

maddenlightfoot · 31/10/2020 10:24

Tayto your evening sounded lovely! Dd wants Game of Life for Christmas!

North the boat ride was grey and misty and very wet but I'm grateful for being able to do these things this week now it looks like lockdown is imminent again. Btw a cocktail making kit is a fab present! My friends have an ice-crusher which makes lovely daiquiris!

I've admitted defeat on October and transferred £500 from savings. We're going out for fish and chips at the pub today, I'm ordering in a huge shop and some stuff to keep the girls busy I may also have ordered gig tickets for next year optimistically hoping things will be better by then It looks like November is going to be a no-spend month after all

Mrsmadevans · 31/10/2020 12:01

Morning everyone 😀
Tayto glad you all had a lovely time 😀
Madden it's like that sometimes l find ,just draw a line and move on, thankfully you have savings to be able to juggle and area Very good at keeping on top of your budget from what l have noticed 💐
Wolf rugger on here too and l could not cope without my tumble dryer 🤗
Snuggly we are in the NT too but have not been able to go to anywhere because of the lockdown and the way it's been done incarcerated in Wales 🤗
Unescorted can she come home before lockdown or is it impossible? Hope you are able to see her, bless you both , l know how l would feel if it were my Dds💐

lifelongfrugaleer · 31/10/2020 12:07

Tried to do some Christmas shopping in town. Got some bits but not much. Need a few more ideas

Mrsmadevans · 31/10/2020 12:11

North Funny you should say about your Ds having a cocktail maker. l have bought one for my Dd2 from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07G4J39R5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_sIjatwAl4i8Y1?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Thank you for your kindness re the shopping queue panic 💐, if l had to isolate l don't know what would happen to Mum & Bob 😔

Mrsmadevans · 31/10/2020 12:18

Em great idea re zoo membership you will get so much use and enjoyment from it I'm sure 😊🦁🐘🐦🐯🐅🦓🦒🦍🐆🐅🦁 forgive me for the overload of emojis I love them 😅
Life hope you get good ideas. l feel like am so behind this year but l just don't feel like it tbh. I am sure there are lots of us feeling the same . Bah humbug 😑

Wolfcub · 31/10/2020 12:43

If Cag is around I could do with some Manga novel recommendations for the 14 year old. We have Tokyo Ghoul, Fantasy 100 year quest and Neon Evangelion on the go and the new star blazers

Absolutely blatring it down here. Really heavy and stormy

Wolfcub · 31/10/2020 13:32

Annual and monthly budget recalculated to account for increases in some bills and change in wage - some of this is about choices so choosing to go to Pilates more costs more, I've finally upgraded my phone after four years of crap battery frustration etc. Ds choosing pack lunches over school dinners moves amounts in different categories and means I need to add a school trips category to my annual budget.

I'm committing to saving 85% of my wage increase. It's not a huge amount in actual £ but it's better than 0 !

lifelongfrugaleer · 31/10/2020 14:23

Got some ideas but not many. In going to throw money at it tomorrow I think and get the bulk. Then go on line for the rest. Stock levels were not great in a lot of shops
