Can we get photos of the beds Autumn?

AdoraBell · 26/12/2018 18:47

NSD

AutumnLeaves12 · 26/12/2018 18:57

Yes Sneaky definitely. It'll all just be soil at first, but that would be really fun to post pictures. I bought onion sets and potato tubers so those will be something to look at initially, besides a lot of seeds packets.

Dh says he will farm with me so that should be a lot of fun.

I'm dying to get an allotment, I'd save SO MUCH MONEY on veg!

Could actually start eating veg regularly

AutumnLeaves12 · 26/12/2018 19:04

I suspect that eating the veg is the hard part. LOL!

An allotment would be great wouldn't it? I gather half trouble of veg gardening is solved by being in an allotment place because then you can share your big crops with neighbours and swap them when they have too much of something nice too. That sounds very good to me.

We don't have anyone to swap with as we'd just be growing in the garden, but we can at least to that.

Ds and I are off wheat, so I'm going to plant a load of potatoes just to be sure. They'll all get eaten one way or the other, and it'll get us a bit of sunshine and exercise. Smile

This is one of our fav presents.

I’m going to work in giving less fucks. I’ll be 35 next year. It’s time.

Festive frugaleering - Merry Christmas, and a happy 2019 to you all.
Fluffycloudland77 · 26/12/2018 19:06

Oh well done Sneaky, def postpone Christmas till your partnered up. Then you can have the same Christmas induced arguments everyone else has.

Nsd.

Trying to watch the crown but dh keeps saying “never fucking happened, you wouldn’t speak to the queen like that. She doesn’t mess about”.

ememem84 · 26/12/2018 19:08

im going to grow stuff this year too. Mostly in pots first. Tomatoes. Strawbs. Courgettes.

Unescorted · 26/12/2018 19:17

I may have eaten my body weight in seafood.

Salad
Beans
Peas
Mange tout
Strawberries
Raspberries
Herbs
Red currents
Blackcurrant acidic soil so they do really well
Rhubarb
Tomatoes ( although they never do overly well)
Spinach
Chard
Radishes
Caugette
Squash
I cheat and get my brother to germinate everything in seed cells in his green house and then I just pot in when it gets warm enough.
Onion, carrot and spuds all grow well enough here but take space so will just get them from the grocers.

LonelyOversharer · 26/12/2018 19:23

I know you're being flip, but it's called gardening autumn and most of us on this thread grow some fruit and veg. Unless you have a small holding, of course, then you can be a "hobby farmer". Anyway, theres a long running allotment thread on here, which is full of lovely helpful posters, it works a bit like this thread, lots of advice and chatter.

Personally, I was wanting a poly tunnel, as it's cold oop north, but in reality a driveway and a new roof are more of a priority. So my veg season will continue to be short.

em with your climate you should be able to grow some lovely veggies.

It has been a nsd here, will venture out for milk tomorrow. I did put piping bags in my amazon basket though as the ones I got from asda are rubbish. I'm going to try reusable silicone ones, but usually get a catering roll of blue ones. Not sure when I'll check out, certainly not today.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 26/12/2018 19:25

jam dd loves bath bombs and anything from lush, also likes anything to do with cacti (that might just be her though!) Board games and books always a safe bet, girls vary so much at that age though in terms of likes/dislikes and maturity!

If that's true about having to stockpile food I think a lot of people will go hungry 😟 makes me so angry.

QuiteisbringingFrugalback · 26/12/2018 19:27

Hope everyone is having a relaxing time .
My resolution is to post more Frugal stuff and less stuff. Hence new name Smile
Have been reading an old thread and way too much info on there .
Some posters sound the same, others very different .
Have enjoyed lovely food and a nice walk today, leftovers tonight.
Have some lovely gifts and will not need to buy toiletries, perfume (3 different favourites gifted)or books this coming year #stern

I will not twitch and buy any food until the fridge is bare.
3 x NSD
Not even looking online as nothing needed.

Im hoping to grow plenty of squash this coming year as they keep really well.
Best to all for the coming year Flowers

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 26/12/2018 19:29

I don't have enough space to grow much veg 😔 both my parents had allotments and had to give them up as they didn't have enough time to keep them up. Growing your own food is time consuming.

Happierwithouthim · 26/12/2018 19:31

Was out all day with dc so none of us ate anything since breakfast €17.80 on 2 9" pizzas & 2 cans of Diet Coke. Was yummy & a nice treat, turkey dinner postponed until tomorrow.

€1 on candle for my Nan & regifted mince pies, I don't like them enough to waste 200+ calories on them.
€23.49 on toaster for dm, I might have posted about that already.

Yes gardening autumn

ememem84 · 26/12/2018 19:36

lonely I hope so! I’ve never grown anything previously. So it’s a new hobby for me. Fil had an allotment and managed to grow onions, courgettes, squashes, tomatoes, salad, beans loads of stuff.

We shall see how it goes. I’m planning on clearing the geraniums out of one of the beds soon and then sorting the soil out. Will head to the beach and collect some vraic (seaweed) and dig in. As well as some horse poop. Get the soil ready now and then hopefully it’ll grow some good stuff. Will be growing in big pots first.

Am planning on getting a lemon tree soon though.

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 26/12/2018 19:44

I grow my things here (excuse the mess)

Grew a cucumber last year - determined to grow tomatoes and strawberries this year!

Festive frugaleering - Merry Christmas, and a happy 2019 to you all.
SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 26/12/2018 19:44

This window gets sunlight for as many hours as the sun is in the sky!

AutumnLeaves12 · 26/12/2018 19:45

Lonely you sound really cheesed off. I'm a bit confused tbh, and also very sorry if I offended. What did I do wrong? I can call it gardening if you prefer.

I only said farming as a bit of fun, and because I kind of think of gardening mowing the lawn and planting flowers, whereas growing food seems different.

Girlie I totally agree that the food stockpiling is bonkers, and I don't know what the government are thinking, putting us through this. I'm only getting my skates on because ds and I have really significant food intolerance problems and I'm really quite concerned at how we'd cope. I figure I need to take responsibility for our situation and sort something out. Potato growing seems to be the way forward for us. Also it would be a whole lot of fun and get me out in the sunshine.

My plan for this year is to give slightly more fucks about my appearance and to try harder with talking and listening when I'm with people so as to have more RL friends. And also have have less anxiety trouble so as to be able to leave the house more often. #ReallyLivinItLarge

OP posts:
AutumnLeaves12 · 26/12/2018 19:47

That's a good big window Sneaky.

I think you'll be fine btw. As I say, I'm only doing this, because Ds and I have very restricted diets so I want to make sure we are covered.

OP posts:
LonelyOversharer · 26/12/2018 19:54

I'm not in the slightest bit cheesed off! Have had a super day being busy doing nothing.

Unescorted · 26/12/2018 20:06

I keep flipping..... At the moment I am thinking yes I will have to stockpile so have got plenty of inhalers (a well known pharmacy chain was complicit in this & didn't charge me for them). I will get pasta and rice, dried beans, lentils, pasatta and flour when I get home. I have already bought in larger than usual quantities of spices. Also over the counter medicines and toiletries. We have access to potable spring water and farm gate milk and meat. I am a programme manager so can't help preparing for the worst outcome even if it is unlikely.

Happierwithouthim · 26/12/2018 20:06

Natural Nutrients have 20% off today so I bought the Christmas protein hamper which had 20% off 3x 300g protein powders plus free shaker so got an additional 20% off to make it €32.81 incl delivery instead of €44.50, probably enough for me until Easter

Happierwithouthim · 26/12/2018 20:07

Lovely window must feel like living outdoors sometimes sneaky

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 26/12/2018 20:10

I'll take a picture tomorrow when it's light - I have some fields I can see at the back!

I'm a bit worried about my immunosuppressants - how the fuck do I stockpile those?

Unescorted · 26/12/2018 20:21

sneaky speak to your GP.... I know the official dictate is for NHS staff to say don't stockpile, but many have not done this. Ask them if your child had this condition then what would you do? HP is a hotbed of subversion so I think you should at least get an honest answer.
