Looking around at bungalows here they seem to be £500k+, which is quite a step up from the £250k that houses are where my parents live. It's doable though. It's just the thought of moving to such a different culture that is hard I think. Going home to a place where they have no backup is also hard though, and we're have no back up here then either, so it's quite a pressing question.

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/07/2017 07:03

Morning
£500k for a bungalow. Gosh.
Never got the cp attraction. Have been to Sherwood forest for an event with the girls but didn't see why it was worth the money, sorry.
That afternoon tea looks lush. As do the Donuts.
Well done meadow. Fab news.
Our pool is about £10 for an adult and 2 DC to swim. It's decent enough but the change rooms are vile.

Need to get some turkey from sainsbury today for dinner. £40 in matalan on a new suitcase. 2 weeks to holiday and I'm so do not organised.

SunnyLikeThursday · 30/07/2017 07:50

Yes house prices are very different here but so are salaries. Computing jobs can get £110k a year here but only £45k at home so the house prices are very closely knit to the salaries. It only gets tricky if we want to move between areas.

mammymammyIRL · 30/07/2017 07:53

Still not caught up so going to start with posting yesterday's spends & continue from there

€81.20 on two county half zip tops one for dgd's birthday & one for dh's birthday - had 20% discount

€8.85 on cake for dsis birthday & a pushpop for dd (guilt because I wasn't attending a match she was playing but doing my final tax return instead Blush)

€73.50 + €3.50 tip for a chinese in local restaurant for 4 adults & 2 dc. Yummy & we didn't have starters & came home and had cake for dessert, dsis & I drank tap water rest didn't. It was a treat for dsis birthday & dh birthday.

€20.68 in local shop on newspaper, toilet paper & some junk food for last night.

WreckTangled · 30/07/2017 08:00

Off to the local farm park today have membership so should be a LSD.

Apparently my uncle is in hospital but I don't know the details. He's been transferred to Brighton so doesn't sound good.

mammymammyIRL · 30/07/2017 08:33

Sorry to hear that about your uncle wreck are you enjoying work free time now?

WreckTangled · 30/07/2017 08:36

Mammy it's amazing I really can't believe my luck!

mammymammyIRL · 30/07/2017 08:47

Next summer I'm going to see if I can finish early one or two days a week just to spend extra time with my guys.

Changing hours to suit childcare for two weeks of August so will be starting at 8 instead of 7.15 so will see them in morning probably

WreckTangled · 30/07/2017 09:26

My uncle is in intensive care after having an operation on his foot due to an infection

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/07/2017 09:42

Diabetic?

WreckTangled · 30/07/2017 09:46

Undiagnosed. His bm was 16 but he won't go to the dr about it after a horrible experience once. Also have the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy to contend with...

ChristmasSeacow · 30/07/2017 09:46

Sorry to hear that Wreck

Welcome back Meadow and congrats on both finding new jobs - not easy to coordinate 2 people. I hope this new chapter in your life goes well.

I have a pork shoulder and a slow cooker - any recommended recipes for pulled pork? That is my plan for tonight, have ciabatta buns and corn on the cob, will also make wedges.

ChristmasSeacow · 30/07/2017 10:03

I have been a very kind wife and sent DH to the Oval to watch the cricket. I need to think of how to entertain DS - we might just go to the local park for a bit of fresh air. Hopefully DD will comply.

LonelyOversharer · 30/07/2017 10:20

sunny aren't your parents retired? It's cool if your wages match your house price, but if you're retired and on a fixed income it could look terribly expensive. But if they want to be close to you and ds, it's a small price to pay. My own parents (just into their 70's) are comfortably off in their 125k bungalow, but if they had to relocate and spend £500k+ they'd be buggered. But they live 10 miles from me, and 300 from my sister, so I guess I'm on the better side of the deal (I moved close, she moved away).

love cp was great for the dc (totally exhausing for us), bike rides on safe paths, the excitement of being away, and the huge tropical pool, the likes of which we have no access to round here. As they're bigger now I think I'd rather go abroad to an all inclusive resort dreams on, the passports alone cost a weekend at cp

I think I need to proritise saving for a proper holiday. We have had one night away in 6 years.

wreck why won't they go to the doctors earlier?? We had an old boy in yesterday who fell off his bike, he's clearly broken ribs, and is refusing to seek help - getting his bike fixed though, sigh. All the best to your uncle.

We need loo roll. Why do I constantly go shopping and forget basic things like this? So I'll have to go out and buy at least that. Will probably do a tip run as well, so much crap to get rid of. Looks like bright sunshine/torrential rain showers today, so not sure how much outside stuff will get done.

FridgeCut · 30/07/2017 11:13

Re: passport costs, last year we paid for passports instead of going on holiday, it is terribly expensive. This year we have been to Menorca (term time) and we go to france to a eurocamp (le vieux port) at the end of august. We save every month for holidays, it is a fixed line in my budget! We live near Woburn CP and went a lot when DS1 was a toddler, now it is just too expensive.

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/07/2017 11:32

£70 something sainsbury but used £15 nectar points as got a game.

Fucking hell. I think I've messed up a job application (for the job I'm doing) I passed the online test but not by much. I don't think it will be enough. Fuck.

Dropped my wrapmaster too so will have to do a 40 minute drive to Lakeland to towns I never go to.

Ah well. It is what it is..

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/07/2017 11:49

Would they let you do it again?.

LonelyOversharer · 30/07/2017 12:17

I was clearly asleep earlier, my cp comment was to life not love who's there atm, sorry!

life why are you applying for your own job? It sounds a horrible thing to have to do. Will they replace the wrapmaster? I find Lakeland very good avoids windemere Get yourself some licorice while you're in (strawberry for me please). I do hope the rest of your day will be better x

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/07/2017 12:23

No, it's a once thing and the score is saved for 6 months. I'm on temporary promotion and this is a substantive role.
I don't think they will add it dropped it 7 foot from the top of my fridge. I have some strawberry liquorice stashed somewhere from my last visit. I love the Windermere store. I don't have enough in savings to go there though.

I might give windfell a go for a weekend in autumn and see as it's just under an hour from us.

CremeEggThief · 30/07/2017 12:32

DS and I had an amazing mid-week holiday at Whinfell 6.5 years ago. We still talk about it now! Very expensive though; we stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment instead of a lodge, but all in all, we still spent about £800. We usually have a week or 10 days abroad for £1500 tips, which I think shows just how dear it is. Worth it though.

Would they consider a ground floor apartment, Sunny?

ememem84 · 30/07/2017 13:08

I just googled wrapmaster. I was hoping it was something to do with tortilla wraps and maybe a helpful foldy gadget to get them wrapped up nice and tight. They always fall apart when I try and wrap them. Bit disappointed that it's not actually 😉

Should be a nsd today. Bank accounts are looking fairly healthy. Have just transferred £150 to my credit card.

Neither dh or I are feeling particularly hungry still. I've eaten breakfast but just feel full. Curse you delicious afternoon tea!

Meal planning with the aim of defrosting freezer next Saturday.

CremeEggThief · 30/07/2017 13:34

When I went out for afternoon tea for a former colleague's birthday a few weeks ago, I had nothing until lunchtime the next day, I was so stuffed, Em. Even then, it was a case of eating because I'd gone 19 hours without food, rather than actually being hungry!

SunnyLikeThursday · 30/07/2017 13:55

lonely yes that's the thing. Unfortunately db and I both moved far away, but to the same place. Creme no they definitely wouldn't. They live in a very spacious place with amazing views, so I think a flat with no view would be step too far. They're looking at being in it for 15 years probably. I think we could manage a bungalow though hopefully.

Taytocrisps · 30/07/2017 14:26

Doing my usual weekend catch up.

em can't believe you're 31 weeks already! The months are flying by. I wonder how long the laundry standoff will last and who will cave in first. I love reading about catface's antics. That afternoon tea was amazing - loved the seaside theme.

waitresses sorry to hear the holiday went so badly wrong. I'm guessing you paid extra to either upgrade or move to a different location. Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday

Cag that's a great saving on the online learning programmes. Enjoy the visit with your parents. My fridge is also freezing stuff. It's 17 years old though. If DH gets a bonus in August, we're going to replace it.

Lonely do you get paid for painting the Beatrix Potter things? That's a handy way of earning some extra income. Verrry annoying about the missed appointment. Oh and I share your pain when it comes to empty loo roll tubes!

Welcome aboard Winch

Wreck that dragon tail was a great find. We don't do World Book Day here thankfully. At Hallowe'en the kids go into school dressed up in their Hallowe'en costume (usually the day before they break up for the October mid-term break). I pass a school on my way into work and it's funny to see all these little witches and ghosts and monsters walking along the street with their schoolbags on their backs. The kids also get to dress in green the day before St. Patrick's Day - usually very tasteful cheap 'Irish' stuff from Penneys (which was probably made in China). Like green net skirts adorned with shamrocks and tricolour hair ribbons etc. I read one of your posts too quickly and thought you'd bought peacocks! Shock Grin. It was a bit of a letdown when I realized you'd actually bought boxer shorts. Your cat is just gorgeous. I'd love a dog or cat but it would be cruel to get a dog as we both work and we'd be leaving it alone all day. DH reckons he's allergic to cats so that's not an option either Sad.

Seacow congrats. to your DS on his nursery graduation. A pity the day was so stressful for him (and you) Sad. It should have been a happy day for you both. Is he starting school in September?

Fluffy, em and Wreck we seem to be married to the same man. DH always tells us we have to be ready to leave at x time. At the appointed time, DD and I are standing in the hall waiting while DH is doing about 10 last minute things.

Laska I love the wall plaques. Annoying about the postage though. I'm always reluctant to order online because the postage adds considerably to the cost of the items. For example, Amazon offers free postage to the UK/NI but we have to pay postage. Also, some retailers won't ship to the ROI.

Copper the treasure hunt you organized for your DGD sounded fun. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Where are you off to in Ireland? Do you need any recommendations or are you all sorted?

Sunny that's a big move for your parents. I hope they find a suitable house. Your DS is doing really well with his swimming.

Meadow good luck with the new jobs and flat etc. Exciting times ahead but unsettling too. Hope you cope ok with all the changes.

Hi to anyone else I've missed.

As for me, I've been having an expensive week. I got all of DD's uniform (except her shirts) and it came to €214. A new schoolbag cost €42.50 but it's a sturdy Ridge 53 bag so I'm hoping to get three years out of it. I also spent about €50 on school workbooks/dictionaries/calculator etc. I still have to get shirts, shoes and pay the €130 book rental fee but I'll leave that until the next pay day (DH gets paid monthly). Last night we ordered a take away as we'd no food in the house and DH had no car (temporarily) - that set us back €15 + €3 tip.

Work has been very busy as there are so many people on holidays. And nothing seems to be straightforward - everything I did this week involved some complication or other. I've only been back two weeks and I feel like I need another holiday!

Having a quiet Sunday today. DD was at a sleepover at her friend's house so we're not long back. DH has gone out for a run.

ememem84 · 30/07/2017 15:38

tayto tell me about it! It seems like only yesterday I was just feeling a bit bloated and sicks and couldn't quite work out why...now I'm sat here in maternity jeans.

Dh has one work shirt left.

We've been out to town and have visited the local portuguese cafe (inspired by another thread on here where the poster was raving about portuguese orange cake!) and had orange cake and coffee. Yum.

Dinner with parents this evening. We're going to walk up - hopefully will walk off some of the cake!
