NSD here. Sainsburys order is coming later, which will be £46.04 out on Monday. It includes 3 Easter eggs and a bottle of wine, so very happy with that.

I used a sling til DS was 3 months and then he was in a Macclaren Quest (which was about £70) from then on. It was still going strong when I passed it on to a friend when he was 3.5! We didn't have a car and lived in cities (first London, then Bristol), so portability and ease of use were our main priorities.

SunnyLikeThursday · 07/04/2017 15:57

Fluffy we have those mums too here. It's a bit scary tbh.

Prams sound like a minefield!

Spends today:
£1.99 on a pack of highlighters from the post office for my revision as a few of mine have now run out.
£1.50 on a book from local hospice charity shop to send off as an Easter gift for the child DH used to be nanny for last year while we lived abroad and his new baby sister.
£11 on a book from a local gift shop for our baby cousin's Easter present and £9 on a little soft rabbit toy as Easter present for said baby sister of DH's ex-charge.
Wanted to buy a box or package from the post office for when we post them but I'm rubbish with spatial perception so I couldn't tell which one would be the right size Confused.

Lovely weather here. It says 13 degrees on the forecast but I reckon it's a bit more.

ememem84 · 07/04/2017 17:23

Omg it's all so confusing. I know they sell: bugaboos mamas and papas stokke and (another brand who's name I e forgotten) here. So for trialling etc it'll have to be one of the ones I can get locally.

It's almost as complicated as buying a car.

A friend has a mamas and papas and she swears by it. And I'm largely going on her recommendations. She has a similar car to us too...!
It's a lot to think about though. And a lot of money.

Finally the weekend. We're off for a takeaway pizza on the beach (it's 15 degrees here so jumpers and scarves for the beach but nice to watch the sun go down to relax).

SunnyLikeThursday · 07/04/2017 17:33

Em yes the pram thing melted my mind for months. I think it was mainly because I'm not a fashion label kind of person though and the Bugaboo one was obviously the right choice. It took me a long time to get used to the idea. It may be that there is also an obviously right choice for you out there too, and hopefully you'll find it more easily than I did.

Have you seen the Silver Cross Kensington in person. I drooled over those for a good while. They are impossible to turn though, and weigh a ton.

OP posts:
Cagliostro · 07/04/2017 17:41

They are indeed a minefield! I haven't paid attention really since having DS, other than seeing prams in town and being like OOOOH that looks cool :o (particularly the amazing range of fabrics you can get now - even in 'my day' - bear in mind DD is not quite 10 - it was mostly plain colours available). I'm definitely going to make use of the library's Which? subscription (just not yet, don't want my ex-colleagues talking :o). There are just so many factors to consider. And you could be using it every day for a couple of years really.

I did like the Silver Cross one we had though so that may be a brand we look at first.

ChristmasSeacow · 07/04/2017 19:27

I think the main challenge with pram buying as a first timer is not being able to see into the future... you know you will do a,b,c but you may not predict certain other scenarios (like I said above, nursery requirement for umbrella fold. Or- I checked the pram fitted into the car and wasn't too bothered that it wasn't terribly compact, until we went away with a bootful of pram and everything else squashed around the seats!).

TBH I think umbrella buggies are the most practical for older babies, say 6-9m+ as they tend to accommodate up to the age of walking and are themselves more lightweight, handy as the toddler chunks up. But they are not as handy at first if you need to, say, clip your car seat onto the chassis from time to time with a sleeping baby in it, or if you want the baby parent-facing when little. I think it's okay to end up with both at different stages but I probably would have spent less on the 'main pram' and got something more compact if I had my time again. Also wouldn't buy the actual pram carry cot attachment as DS preferred the seat thingy anyway (more cosy). Basically, I wish I'd been swayed less by beauty and sales talk and foreseen some of the practical stuff with a 1-yr old, which is b different to a newborn!

Em you might have a reasonable choice of height-suitable prams as I think it has got much better in the last few years. My friend is 5'10 and really liked the icandy raspberry second time around (she spent less the first time on a mothercare travel system and cursed it constantly - had to send it off for fixing a couple of times and it was never without glitches. So second time around she got a not-top-of-the-range icandy and swore by it!).

Cup holder is handy though I never Thought of putting beer in it! Good job I've got another chance Grin

Morning of housework and misery from DS, much nicer afternoon in the garden. I was twitching at all the weeds and did pull a fair few up but really shouldn't do too much of that as I am having difficulty walking now with SPD. Bending, lifting and pushing things really exacerbate the problem. And I still have 10+ weeks to go. Really hoping to avoid crutches but not feeling confident Hmm. Poor DH is doing much more because I can't but there aren't enough hours in the day for him!

Only spends today were Ocado for approx £100 - but £38 of that was nappies as I doubled up on their 2 for £19 offer while it was on and while size 7s were in stock (they are often out). However, this afternoon I answered the door to my first NHS nappy delivery (courtesy of the incontinence service) so I now have an absolute mountain of nappies, no idea where on earth we will store them all!

Sausage and fennel ragu with dumplings and broccoli for dinner. I am trying a few of the midweek meal ideas from the latest delicious magazine. I did not particularly predict sunny weather for this one Grin

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 07/04/2017 19:34

Hi all, love the phrase melted my mind Grin if I were to do the whole baby thing again not likely i would do the sling and Maclaren buggy rather than a super expensive pram. I wasted £350 on a shit pram for dd that was only used for 3 months Hmm moved onto a lovely Maclaren buggy which was brilliant, dd loved it and was in it until she was 4yo Blush

Anyway, I am knackered work has been busy, busy as per usual and i have to work all wend - grr!! Was another NSD though, my plants arrived from Amazon and I have just had a very nice half hour potting them all out, they all look in good nick considering they have been through the post!!

Dd has enjoyed her holiday club this week which makes it worth the money, she has caught the sun today and has a healthy glow about her Smile

ChristmasSeacow · 07/04/2017 20:05

Ooh I know what I was going to ask: quite a way back I am sure someone mentioned that Sainsbury's are not doing their nectar double-up for a bit - is that so? If not, does anyone know when the next 25% off Tu is likely to be? Ta!

ChristmasSeacow · 07/04/2017 20:07

Forecast for the weekend down in SE is scorchio, Girlie - I hope you are not missing a whole window of nice weather where you are Sad

allthebestplease · 07/04/2017 20:24

Yes to carrying in a sling and then a Maclaren. (defo).
Nsd today and yesterday (go me).

ememem84 · 07/04/2017 20:29

Dinner with a view?

Frugaleers saving and chatting through April
CremeEggThief · 07/04/2017 20:31

I don't know for definite, Seacow, but people on my Facebook were talking about the 12th for TU. So I hope that's about right.

Meal plan:
Tonight : pizza. I had extra pineapple, black olives and vine tomatoes on mine.
Tomorrow: gnocchi with pesto and avocado.
Sunday: either a veggie roast dinner (Quorn roast, roast potatoes and parsnips, carrots, broccoli, Yorkshire puddings and gravy) or if we go out, have lunch out.
Monday: scrambled eggs on toast or omelette and salad. Pilates and Cadets night.
Tuesday: I'm going out for dinner with a friend. DS can have a veggie hotdog or veggie cottage pie from the freezer.
Wednesday: either veggie roast dinner, if we go out on Sunday, or veggie burgers with wedges and salad. DS is going away the next day for Easter, so we will have our Easter eggs then too.
Thursday: macaroni cheese with spinach.
Friday: same.

Loveabaconsandwich · 07/04/2017 20:48

NSD

Really tired so just reading at the moment

northender · 07/04/2017 20:50

Can't contribute to all the buggy chat as its much too long ago for me (old gimmer emoticon!).
Busy but productive week here. We've had the remortgage offer confirmed so that will be going through asap. There will be £2k of fees but current lender have confirmed that they will refund it all within 5 working days of receipt of proof of payment. There are lots of people in the same situation so they have a department set up just for dealing with the people remortgaging.
Had the day off work today and had planned to go out with dd but she ended up going to a friend's house so dh finished work early & we went for a lovely walk. The walk was frugal but the scone afterwards not so much!
Took ds to get all the new cricket kit he needed for the new season. Spent £260 of which the new bat was £170Shockbut my dad is paying. I don't have a good relationship with dad but he takes a keen interest in ds' cricket and the kit isn't cheap so I let him pay Blush
Dh & DS are going to football tomorrow and will be away all day as its a long trip. Dh is in charge of sorting out frugal food & drink for them: flask and sandwiches at the ready! Dd is doing cricket scoring for the first time this year as the first team have a friendly. It will earn her £15 which she is putting towards the cost of an iPhone (not the newest model). It may not be the most exciting job but for a 12 year old it's good money and a great exercise in sustained concentration. By the end of the season she should have enough for the new phone. It will be good as I'll have the afternoon free so will hopefully get some gardening done. Dh has been doing great work this week preparing the ground for sowing and planting.

Have a good weekend everyone, whatever you're doing.

lifelongfrugaleer · 07/04/2017 21:00

Yes they are not doing the spring double up, apparently something exciting in its place. The 25% is usually leading up to a bank holiday. We were talking about it at work today and reccon Tuesday. Typically when I'm no where near a sainsbury or internet.

HollyTheHarrier · 07/04/2017 21:27

Beautiful view Em. Looks like spring. Has the EA passed your offer on yet? How infuriating that he didn't do it straightaway.

Need which marathon are you doing? I'm considering entering one later this year but can't quite make my mind up. Worried that the training will take up too much time.

Sunny hope the program helps with your breathing, in which case it will be a sound investment. Ever tried yoga? That's supposed to slow breathing down. I liked it when I used to do it anyway, should really get back into it.

Christmas great news on the healthy scan 😊

Frugal activities this weekend include meal planning, sorting out expenses to reclaim and preparing for a mortgage appointment (latter maybe not so frugal). Tonight I'd very much enjoy a glass of wine after a pretty hard week, but I have a race tomorrow so I'll refrain.

SnugglySnerd · 07/04/2017 21:46

Seacow that made me laugh about predicting the future when buying baby stuff, I'd never have predicted twins! We've done well for kind friends passing stuff on so we haven't had to buy much extra. Our double buggy was £100 third hand, it's a good one and in great condition.

ememem84 · 08/04/2017 07:54

Riding today and two more house viewings.

We saw another last night so one of today's is the second viewing for that one. It was a surprise. The agent text dh (different company) and told him we needed to view this. He said it was right up our street.

He was right. It's essentially our apartment. With stairs and a lovely south west facing garden.

The downstairs was perfect for entertaining (both dh and I could see dhs lovely friend sitting on kitchen stool or in the garden with a beer - we've termed this the Joey factor - like in friends where chandler and Monica look for a new house)

Today's viewing is to properly check out the upstairs storage (not much) and see what we could do wardrobe wise. Also I want to check out the pantry. it had a freakin pantry

Ticked all boxes: 3 beds, great living space, garage, parking, 2 bathrooms, stairs, south facing garden, out west of island.

Garden is small. But the area it's in is a short drive to the beach (10 minutes in a few directions) or a half hour walk, there are parks nearby, it's a 10 minute walk from the gym (same group as ours but not our usual - this one has a pool) it's on a great bus route, its close to shops pub takeaway. Schools there are good. We could walk to town (it'd take about an hour but it's possible without being on the road much).

SunnyLikeThursday · 08/04/2017 08:05

Holly I did try yoga once but I haven't got the patience. I think that this breath retraining is meant to help with that too, but it only takes ten minutes, three times a day, so I can fit it in more easily.

Em do you need a pram that can go on the beach? Possibly one with really big wheels would help with that. I suppose your local friends would know.

I used to live by the sea and at home a lot of people have the silver cross kensington, presumably because it is more weather proof, and because walking along the prom and back they only need to turn the pram once, so turning doesn't matter so much. Possibly with your unsual geographic locations there will be considerations that alter things.

We tried the sling and McLaren thing, but ds didn't work in slings and the McLaren wheels weren't so good for batting along fast for miles every day. We just used the umbrella fold for planes in the end, and for short journeys if we were going somewhere in the car.

I'm getting into trouble with food inventory at the moment (Bascially buying too much and having it go off in the fridge. I need to buy less stuff more often and keep better control of it I think.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/04/2017 08:17

Free hot cross buns on clicksnap.

Cagliostro · 08/04/2017 08:21

I'd like to try some yoga. Or pilates. I might have a look on youtube for appropriate stuff.

Agree about forward planning (agree on the twins though! No predicting that!) - it's very easy to get lost in the newborn stage of planning when there's a whole lot more after that. Our travel system was busted by the time DD got big enough to use it as a buggy rather than being in the car seat, the wheels were awful, waste of money TBH.

Cagliostro · 08/04/2017 08:21

Oooh hot cross buns.

ememem84 · 08/04/2017 08:23

sunny most prams sold here have big wheels to cope with cobbled streets, beaches etc. So it's not a massive thing we need to think about ifswim. They've done that for us!
Dh likes the sling idea though. So maybe we'll get one of them too.

If I get a pram with a cup holder I'm shoving a bottle of Hendricks in there. With a straw. Mmmm gin Gin Grin

ChristmasSeacow · 08/04/2017 08:29

I am missing gin. Especially when the sun shines. But I don't have a gin emoticon Sad
