Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/12/2016 19:40

Hi all Xmas Smile

Oh dear Need sometimes a mini meltdown is the only thing that gets through! I had one at dd the other week, I really don't ask a lot of her but she had dropped her dirty washing infront of the flipping washing basket Xmas Angry the red mist descended!! She hasn't done it since Xmas Wink

Have had a nice day, my dad and step mum came down and treated us all to lunch which was lovely. I had a twitch and bought dd another gift which was £16.99, it will be a one from FC and I know she will love it.

Unfortunately had another headache this afternoon, seem to be averaging one or two a week atm Xmas Sad will look to get a drs appointment after Christmas now. Have been knocking back painkillers but its still there although slightly better, was lying in a dark room earlier.

My dbrother has rung and said the fitbit hasn't turned up which is a big disappointment as that was our mums main gift from us, we ordered it a month ago!! Gahh!!

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/12/2016 19:44

Oh and have been paid which is good although am a little bit Hmm at how I am going to manage all the way to the end of January now!!

Plan is not to spend anything in Jan sales other than for my mum and dds bday! I don't need anything

mammymammyIRL · 23/12/2016 19:46

Snuggly I just purchased a kindle book for 99p because the authors surname is my maiden name & got £1 Amazon credit!

ChristmasSeacow · 23/12/2016 20:53

I ran out of steam and did nothing after the buttercream (except a little nap - so probably won't sleep tonight).

DH scored a crispy duck half at M&S near work so our lazy treat dinner is back on. There's a lot of cleaning and baking left for tomorrow. Need I know exactly what you mean, I have flipped out at DH on occasion. He has got better over time with things like emptying bins, putting a wash on etc but he still needs prodding about almost everything and he does literally nothing about food. We've lived in this house nearly 8 years and he has coooked a meal once (when I bought the ingredients and presented him with a recipe card). It really enrages me when I am ill or completely knackered, or when I had to bring work home and was going to be up to the wee small hours (frequent occurrence). His answer is always that he's happy to have ready meals Angry. His mum once made a comment about how I should get him to do more and I am afraid I gave her a very direct look and said that I thought the patterns were set a long time ago. She did have the grace to say she should have got him to do more!

I expect I will throw my toys out tomorrow and he will have to make his acquaintance with the hoover - I am not doing all the cooking and all the cleaning!

Girlie it is so annoying when things don't arrive in time!

SnugglySnerd · 23/12/2016 21:14

Pleased you got the credit too, manmy. It seems like an odd way to make money - giving away more than people are spending! I suppose it gets a lot of repeat custom.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/12/2016 22:25

I need a yearly plan for Christmas. I'll be in card factory as soon as they open to hoover up cards for next year, bottle bags & gift wrap.

I feel all out of control & uncomfortable. I'm thinking an envelope in the safe & we both put a fixed sum in each month.

Food £100
Wine £20
Presents for family £100

Roughly £10 a month each should do it.

I've noticed there are no smart price Christmas puddings this year Sad. The others have cows milk products in.

Tryingtosaveup · 23/12/2016 23:18

I think you are all heroes ( or heroines) the amount you do, especially when you are working or coping with illness or difficult DCs.
DP came to stay yesterday. He was bringing the meat and drink. I asked him to bring a turkey crown and pigs in blanket.
DD, DSiL and 2 small DGCs are coming on Boxing Day and staying over.
I said we are having turkey butties which is what they want.
So he brought: large Turkey minus legs and wings ( think 20 lb Turkey). 2lbs large sausages, 2lbs chipolatas, 2lb bacon, 2lb sausage meat, 3 large steaks.
And 20 kg of cheese! . I am veggie!
He goes overboard.
We could feed the 5000,
He just doesn't listen to me. He will have to take some back home.
But he is lovely as he has been outside all afternoon cutting up wood for the wood burner so I can't complain.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/12/2016 23:31

I know what you mean fluffy normally I consider some of my savings are savings towards Christmas and Birthdays but now my savings are so depleted I don't. Next year I will have to increase how much I save so I can use some of the money for extras. Sorry not sure if that makes sense but I know what i mean Xmas Wink

ChristmasSeacow · 23/12/2016 23:55

I know what you mean Fluffy. We definitely can't spend this much next year, especially as I won't be working, with the new baby, and not getting Mat pay either. We have spent soooo much on food (not even drink- as we have quite a bit and I am not drinking). We could have spent less but still not as little as I would like. I have no idea how people do it for £100 if they have guests.

Next year I am going to try not to host - that seems to be making the major difference. I still have to sort NYE as we are hosting again then and I am doing a meal of some sort. Maybe a Tagine. Needs to be cost effective but not look cheap, Iyswim.

Anyway, we will enjoy it this year then draw a line. Haven't been too bad on gift spending but will cut back more next year in the light of extended austerity Chez Seacow.

Cag has gone quiet! Everything alright there?

ChristmasSeacow · 23/12/2016 23:57

Trying your DP has been very generous - and helpful. He sounds like a keeper!

mammymammyIRL · 24/12/2016 06:08

Trying well done to your dp
Fluffy & girlie we have spent more than budgeted for Christmas but it's because we borrowed from Christmas savings during the year. I'll tally it & we will save that amount weekly next year. We were putting away €55 weekly towards it since summer but not earlier in the year. At a rough guess for wood pellets, turf, and Christmas if we save €65 from week 1 we will have plenty. We haven't hosted guests that are staying here before either & we bought a new tree in January & new lights this month. I would like to save €80 so that €15 is there for emergency fund. Will see when I work out figures. I have ynab since April so will look at figures there.

I've been paying monthly for ynab, no discount that way though so yesterday I budgeted for paying for a years subscription next week using gift money. 10% discount that way!
It has definitely tidied up my finances so worth it.
I input my meter reading yesterday & my electricity bill is €60 less than last December. This is combination of switching suppliers & installing an covered outdoor line so that we don't use the dryer very much, weather has been milder too of course.

seacow I can highly recommend jools beef stew as a crowd pleaser, I always add extra veg & it doesn't suffer with less meat.
Recipee*

Fluffy I keep my Christmas & savings for yearly expenses in a rabodirect account, earns a little interest & I can transfer money back online within 24 hours if it's needed. It's an online only account. I used 30 day notice one year but you can't take advantage of a bargain mid year with it.

Snuggly it's amusing alright.

Ynab tells me I'm on target to paying off my 0% transfer cc on time. I intend switching my remaining cc to 0% when I have this one completed.
Joint account owes me money, I think when child benefit comes in on 3rd June it can go straight against my cc #2

I did bulk of wrapping last night when dc were in bed, dh was asleep on couch & woke up halfway through & helped from then on. I had brought everything downstairs so he brought Santa stuff back up to crawl space when I'd finished. I've a bit left to do this morning it's in granny annex of house next door so I think I'll head down shortly while everyone's sleeping & finish off.

Don't envy those who've been paid early & need it to last until end Jan. When I started first at this company at start of Christmas week you got holiday pay & wages together & had to try budget it until getting paid when back at work & that was hard enough. Our fc is paying our wages weekly as normal this year so that's a big help.

Going to put Christmas ham & turkey crown into the two slow cookers now too & full turkey will be cooked tomorrow.

Fluffy Internet shop all the way!!
As I was wrapping I realised 80% of ours was bought online.
I spent €50 on addresspal which is €3.50 per package but that was still saving money compared to buying in the shops & our post office needs the transactions to be viable so win win.

Must pay local property tax this week €225 & budget properly for it next year, like I did in 2015!

A local company here have sent a gang of men to U.K. To repair power lines from storm Barbara, the guys will earn €5500 for 5 days work, this is probably 8.5 times their regular weekly wage, but missing from their families for Christmas.

mammymammyIRL · 24/12/2016 06:16

Changed my mind, turkey crown going into roasting bag & found a lovely stuffing recipe too for an extra tray of stuffing. We will now have potato stuffing, my Nan's recipe of potato & bread stuffing & this bread only stuffing

Can I substitute walnuts for pine nuts do ye think? Or should I send dh to get some? I don't have ciabatta so will bake some spelt rolls instead to use.

Festive Frugaleers - Chatting and saving through Christmas.
ememem84 · 24/12/2016 07:53

I meant to post yesterday but the hangover got to me.

I am officially on holiday! Until January. Hooray.

After food shopping yesterday £48 I sat on the couch and cried. As I'm so exhausted.

Today I have to:

Put washing on
Go riding
Wrap gifts
Clean house
Make mulled prosecco jelly
Make ice cream
Set table.
Pick up gifts from mum &dad to save them dragging them down to ours tomorrow.

WreckTangled · 24/12/2016 07:59

Oh no em!

Happy Christmas Eve everyone! I really wish we could all meet up, when I win the lottery I will arrange it.

Today we need to make the stuffing (Dh can do it as I don't like getting it under my nails Grin), get the dc to wrap their gifts for each other, go to the park so they can run off all their energy, go to costa for a traditional Christmas Eve hot chocolate then come home and watch films. Dinner will be Indian Mmm. Not sure if I should cook the meat today or not?

Hope no one was too distrusted by the storm? We're too far south for it to get us.

ememem84 · 24/12/2016 08:21

Productive morning so far.

Cat came to demand food at 7. (Must teach her about weekends - she will sit on command now but I'm not sure I taught her that...)
Washing machine put on at 8 (went to empty it last night and things were dry. So either I'd forgotten to actually put it on or I'd left the stuff in there for so long it had dried....)

Made a cup of tea Grin

And made ice cream for tomorrow. Honey comb and chocolate vaminna ice cream.

ememem84 · 24/12/2016 08:22

Vanilla. Ffs.

ememem84 · 24/12/2016 08:23

We also went to the super lovely deli yesterday and bought cheese olives and antipasti for Christmas Day.

Enough for 6 people. £27. I tried everything. Except the olives (bleurgh). All delicious. All totally worth the price. And actually it would have been pricier in Waitrose/m&s.

ememem84 · 24/12/2016 08:24

Just mulled prosecco jellies to make now and my food related chores are complete.

WreckTangled · 24/12/2016 08:45

I'll try your olives em! Mmmm. My dc love olives too.

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/12/2016 08:57

Dh gone for the meat so will see how much that is.
Just rain and wind here from storm Barbara. The west have it worse.
Ds has another cold and is complaining of ear ache.
Happy Christmas everyone.
Ladies (and any gents if we have) will done for getting here. A another year frugaleering and supporting each other.

ememem84 · 24/12/2016 09:11

wreck eugh. Olives. Your dc are so weird!! Wink Grin

apparently I'm the weird one for not liking olives. Or capers. Or goats cheese. Or balsamic vinegar. Or beetroot. Or mushrooms. Something made of those would be my worst nightmare. Bleurgh.

The olives we bought are stuffed with sundries tomatoes.
