I don't think a second job is taxed at 40% wrecked - you pay tax at 40% if you're paid over a particular threshold (I think it's ~£45k).

needastrongone · 06/06/2016 20:04

A second job isn't taxed at 40% per se, it depends on your overall earnings, which the HMRC will know anyway. It will also depend on how the pay is structured, ie would you be paid via the PAYE system or via dividend, which is taxed differently, and you would need to declare via self assessment. You will need to speak to HMRC first. You need to get a Starter form (P46) from the 'new' employer. You PA will be applied to your first employment, so it looks like the tax burden is higher on the second, but overall, your total income is what matters to the HMRC. If it's getting complicated, then an accountant is the best bet to fill our your tax return.

CremeEggThief · 06/06/2016 20:06

No idea if I'll get the £25 I paid for travel back. I mentioned I'd paid for travel for the week to the agency guy, but he didn't offer to reimburse me, so watch this space.
Spends: £25 travel, £1 on a coffee (as I had a 25 minute wait between two buses on my journey home. I was out of the house 7.25-10.00) and £35 on a 5-week block of Pilates. Oh and £10 on the smart meter. A tenner seems to be lasting me for 5 days for both, which is quite good, especially as the standing charge is 46p per day.

Thanks for all your kind words, everyone.Chocolate

needastrongone · 06/06/2016 20:07

ipsos, so impressed with your DS's confidence, to give a talk at the age of 6 is really fantastic, I know my DS would struggle now, let alone at that age. I know your science brain wants reasons for bad behaviour, but sometimes kids are just little sods Smile I recall 6 being hard for DS too, but DD not so much, but hesitate to label behaviour according to the sex of the child.

apivita · 06/06/2016 20:15

Thanks need for the clarification. I've looked on our pensions website and they gave a great example of people with multiple appointments. Eg said if you are paid £20k at X and £40K at Y, the pensions will be calculated on a total of £60k. The tax man I think is perhaps more straightforward. I guess they will know how much I earn in total so they'll adjust that eventually. I don't want to lose out that's all. There's a reason why I'm on the frugal thread!! They can't possibly give me tax free £11k at each place! So I wonder how or who they'll tax more, X or Y. Hm. As long as I don't lose out I don't give a fig.

Tryingtosaveup · 06/06/2016 20:28

HMRC will know your total earnings from employment, Apiv, so as long as it is employment they will add the lot up and tax you 40% .
If it is a franchise are you self employed? If so that's different.
You will probably have to complete a self assessment form each year.
Thanks Creme, I will try freezing macaroni cheese. I am veggie and on my own so often have stuff like that and make too much.

apivita · 06/06/2016 20:33

No not a franchise. It's a joint venture/ collaboration. I suppose like if I was working for Barclays 50% and HSBC 50% (like that would happen!!), so B will pay me .5 and H will pay me .5. Add up its 1.0.

needastrongone · 06/06/2016 20:37

Again, it will depend on how you are paid from A and B. If it's via PAYE, then your PA will be applied to your first employment, but your overall income will still determine your tax liability. If you are planning to be paid via dividend, then you have to self assess, and your tax liability is paid annually, or twice yearly, in July and in January. Pension is also income, and taxed via the PAYE system.

babsmam · 06/06/2016 20:37

£30 on lush tea out just me and dh

PurpleRibbons · 06/06/2016 20:39

Ooh what did you have babs?

apivita · 06/06/2016 20:40

Paid via PAYE so will be deducted every month with the usual NI and child care vouchers etc (which reminds me, how will those childcare vouchers work?). Argh buggers really. I don't need this extra complication. Confused

ipsogenix · 06/06/2016 20:45

Thanks need. Yes I was surprised to look up and realise that he'd given the full five minutes and a run of an interactive computer programme, when the gizmo hadn't even been turned on when I looked down. I'm glad he got to piggyback on my audience like that, and at such a young age. Nice to feel that I've been able to give him something special like that.

People very often ignore ds when he talks about normal stuff as he takes a little while to get to the point. These guys were totally focused on him though, and I hope that he will have seen that and realised that he has a place there. The room where we went was in a robot-building club, and I think I'm going to join up for the summer and see if we can have some more fun.

needastrongone · 06/06/2016 20:46

Applied to one employment I think, but it's not an area have have a lot of familiarity with to be honest. HMRC will know your overall income them, but employment B will need to complete a Starter form (P46) so your overall tax code is applied correctly. Your allowances will be applied to employment A, and any deductions. I would definitely speak to HMRC, they can be really helpful with stuff like this. It's when you start with dividends and the like they are a bit sharper.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/06/2016 20:49

I would ring them to check the tax code.

We know people who channel the money through the caymans. They pay virtually no tax.

needastrongone · 06/06/2016 20:51

They have to find their 'safe' place sometimes don't they ipsos, which can take a little trial and error on our part and theirs Smile

babsmam · 06/06/2016 20:52

Purple I had steak pie and chips. Dh had fish and chips. Yum mmy

ipsogenix · 06/06/2016 21:19

I think you're right need. I think we'll have a go at this place. Perhaps we will both fit. Smile

Whataboutwhathuh · 06/06/2016 21:30

Right. Done all the post payday spending and now all days need to be NSD to get us to payday.

Bought lots of stuff to help finish off our garden and paid wickes £30 for delivery. They rang to say that some of it wasn't in so they would deliver what was and the rest today. But they didn't. I waited in all afternoon and no phone call and no stuff. They didn't deliver what they promised on Thursday either, a lot was missing without explanation. We were at a wedding Friday and Saturday so I left it as I thought it would arrive today. I'm going to ring tomorrow and ask where my things are, I can't do anything until it arrives. I'm going to ask for the delivery fee, do you think I'll get it?

Nursery cocked up and took £250 out of my account. Awaiting it back, so things are feeling very tight. Dh got a performance bonus but that hasn't turned up as expected to pay the pre school bill. Just need to be super careful while I wait for it all!

Cagliostro · 06/06/2016 22:24

Hi all, no chance to catch up today as we only just got home! We left Kidzania 4 hours ago, but trains are mega messed up locally. For the first time I am actually tempted to look into train refunds because it was utterly ridiculous. Am astoundingly proud of my DCs though, and their friends who we travelled back with - virtually the whole group have ASD and they coped brilliantly. Kidzania was fantastic anyway. Insanely busy at first but once the school trip groups left it was much better. Wink :o

This was another spendy day - entry was already paid for, but we had a quick lunch etc and then had to get a taxi due to train cancellations etc. Good grief. Seriously need to rein it in now. Thankfully we aren't going anywhere tomorrow - got the home ed person visiting but not til 2pm.

babsmam · 07/06/2016 06:31

What and cag- yes to both. Ask for delivery refund and train compo.
I'm sure there is something on mse about noon delivery of good as having to wait in.

Need to buy fruit, granola and pack lunch meat today.

apivita · 07/06/2016 09:02

cag definitely make a complaint about the trains. I did that once and got cheques back! Smile

Thanks to all who replied re the money. I've had reassurances from the workplace (various senior people) about it not having an effect on tax or pension so I'm feeling a lot better. One of them had that done before as well so at least I know it can be done. Thinking about it more, it must be pretty common for the pensions people to put it in their FAQ too!

Sorry I've been away from this thread. I need to rein my spending in too. Argh... Today £36 for cleaner, and £25 for a massage. I'm so knackered, mentally and physically...

Working from home today.

CremeEggThief · 07/06/2016 11:02

Cag, if you were delayed over 2 hours, you should be entitled to the full cost of that part of the journey back. You have to apply within 28 days, so don't worry about not doing it straight away, if you're fatigued. Most train companies let you do it online and you can upload photos of the tickets, or you can fill out a form (I think most train stations stock them or you can download them from the traon operator's website) and send it with the tickets in the post. I did it recently for my delayed train journey.

Taytocrisps · 07/06/2016 11:50

Popping in to say hi. We've been having glorious weather for the past week or so but it broke yesterday.

The glorious weather was fab but necessitated weather related spending - I had to invest in new razor blades for shaving those places that are usually kept covered up Smile. Also some suncream.

PurpleRibbons · 07/06/2016 12:20

Aaarrggghhh! Shopping came to £102 Shock. My fault as I picked up some clothes, couldn't face changing rooms with DD so bought things in 2 sizes to try on at home and return so I should get some of it refunded at least. I also had to buy nappies and I got DD some brilliant sandals. They were a tenner, pretty but really well fitting with all the straps adjustable including the one that goes round the back of her heel. Better than any I've seen in Clarks and less than half the price!
Then we went to the library and it's Boookstart week so DD got a free book so that at least was a frugal win!

ipsogenix · 07/06/2016 13:29

Frugal fail here. I started to do a big batch cook and bunged all the things together, then realised the chicken had gone past its sell by date, so had to bin the lot. Ooops.

Ds and I have both got the lurgy today so he is at home. We had a good run of luck these last few weeks though.

Well done Cag. That sounds like a great outing.
