Aldi meat and fish regularly off before use by date

Hi, has anyone else had problems with Aldi's meat and fish going off before use by date? On several occasions we have opened chicken or fish from Aldi on or a couple of days before the use by days before the use by date to find it smelled rank! It is definitely not our fridge as we never have this with meat from other supermarkets. It has put me off Aldi a bit but buying meat and a few other bits in Sainsbury's added the £25 back to our shopping bill that we had saved by going to Aldi. Just wondered if anyone else has had similar issues?

Yep. With chicken, three days before date. Also with mince.

Tinykitchen · 07/02/2015 18:54

Yes, we have had this quite a lot, and I don't get meat there anymore now. I don't get milk either as this was the same and would only last a day or so after being bought, sometimes going off a week or more before the date...

PresidentTwonk · 07/02/2015 18:56

Yes! Their 'deal' is inferior, I return it because they always say the more returns they get because of this issue the quicker they will sort a solution out.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/02/2015 18:56

Yes, for the first time recently. Two days before use by, minced beef had gone grey and absolutely stank. I like Aldi, but it has put me off a bit.

PresidentTwonk · 07/02/2015 18:56

Seal not deal! I changed it and it changed back. Confused

firecracker123 · 07/02/2015 19:24

They pretty much told my DH on their customer service line that it probably had not been at the correct temperature somewhere in transit or in store. I think we are either going to freeze meat as we soon as we buy it from there or buy elsewhere. Riskier meats like chicken, pork, fish I am definitely not buying there anymore

Yes they do.

One of the many reasons I don't shop at Aldi.

Mini05 · 07/02/2015 19:32

I've had this at lidl to with mince, I took it back and they guy said go chose another. When I looked in the fridge there were still some in there off colour! With 2/3 days left on date. Obviously I chose a newer date one.

But yes this as put me off

serin · 07/02/2015 19:42

Yes and with Sainsbury's chicken breast fillets too.

Have to say Sainsbury's were much better at customer service. Couldn't apologise enough and gave me a new pack and the money back.

Aldi questioned me forever about how I had stored them as if I was trying to con them.

ellenjames · 07/02/2015 20:08

Yep we had that loads at Aldi so don't shop there anymore!

TheSilverSwan · 07/02/2015 20:13

I bought a pack of mince, from Aldi, just the other day. It had gone brown after 24 hours in the fridge!

MissYamabuki · 07/02/2015 20:23

Yes this has happened to us quite a few times - as you say the meat smelled rank (more "get that out of the house NOW" rather than "this meat is a bit borderline").

Our nearest Aldi is not exactly round the corner so we can't keep on going back there to return faulty stuff... I just don't get meat there anymore, not even to use on the same day.

FlyingGoose · 07/02/2015 21:14

This is why i do not shop at aldi!

Titsalinabumsquash · 07/02/2015 21:15

I get it with their fruit and veg, mouldy the day after purchase Sad I don't shop there anymore,

Chippednailvarnish · 07/02/2015 21:20

I shop at Aldi, but I never buy their meat.

I've never been happy with the source of meat from either Aldi or Lidl. In particular if you look at their frozen meats, they always seem to be from countries that are very far away. After all chicken from Thailand isn't for any other reason than profit margin...

plannedshock · 07/02/2015 21:22

Same in lidl-don't shop there now.

Happyhetty · 08/02/2015 08:45

I do love Aldi and find their meat good quality but we quickly learnt to freeze straight after buying and defrost day of using. Haven't had any issues since doing this.

Fairylea · 08/02/2015 08:49

I don't buy meat from aldi for this reason. Everything seems to go off very quickly.

StampyShortnose · 08/02/2015 09:00

I've had meat go off early from most supermarkets, Aldi is no better/ worse than the others.

marriednotdead · 08/02/2015 09:02

Like HappyHetty, we always freeze meat unless we are eating it within 24 hours, regardless of where we bought it. No problems that way.

McSqueezy · 08/02/2015 09:03

I've not had this problem with Lidl, but I do find that their meat (British meat) can be a bit tasteless. This could all be a product of my own imagination though!

My brother used to work at Aldi. He won't eat the meat from there now. He says it's not stored properly and there's no way he'd touch it. I still buy it though although I wouldn't buy a weeks worth, just whatever I needed for that day.

Hopefully · 11/02/2015 16:14

I have never had a problem with this. Wonder if it's store-specific, if it's down to food handling?

BlueberryWafer · 11/02/2015 16:20

I've never had this with our local Aldi either, and I've shopped there for about 2 & a half years now. I have some turkey mince in the fridge that goes off tomorrow, I've just prepped tea for ds and DP and the mince is absolutely fine. Same with the chicken breasts I'll be using tomorrow. The only fruit I've found goes off quickly is their strawberries. Everything else seems fine, though I do try and get fruit and veg from the local market.
