Aldi meat and fish regularly off before use by date

Hi, has anyone else had problems with Aldi's meat and fish going off before use by date? On several occasions we have opened chicken or fish from Aldi on or a couple of days before the use by days before the use by date to find it smelled rank! It is definitely not our fridge as we never have this with meat from other supermarkets. It has put me off Aldi a bit but buying meat and a few other bits in Sainsbury's added the £25 back to our shopping bill that we had saved by going to Aldi. Just wondered if anyone else has had similar issues?

I've never had this problem either.

I primarily shop at Tesco and find that chicken will go off if you let it sit in your fridge for 2/3 days. I always freeze chicken on day of purchase and defrost to use immediately. Ignore the use by dates IME.

Yes -with chicken and mince. Doing a week's shop doesn't work out for us as unless the chicken and mince is cooked within a day or two of purchase, it will be off.

I've never had this with the meat but fruit and prepared salad goes of very quickly.

I have not had this problem either, but I do freeze anything I am not going to eat within a couple of days.

I've never had it at our aldi. Have had it twice at morrisons. Bloody wish I had complained but it was so vile I had to bag it and take it to the outside bin as the smell was making me heave, so couldn't really prove anything.

Unfortunately I've had a bad experience as well and I'm fairly new to Aldi. Chicken thighs that stink horribly! This is Hall Green Aldi in Birmingham which only opened earlier this year. I have not had this with Tesco or Sainsburys ever. So no more meat from Aldi for me...

spanisharmada · 13/09/2015 20:43

Yes, discovered this problem today. And it was my first proper shop at Aldi too. Will freeze on day of purchase from now on.

When you're on a tight food budget, it's really worth considering just going veggie. There is nothing in meat that you can't get in a veggie diet (greens for iron, pulses and dairy for protein, olive oils, nuts, avocado and linseed oil for omega 3) and meat alternatives are so much cheaper and keep better. A large bag of lentils will keep forever in the pantry (and you can get it very cheap from markets and independent Asian shops) and will substitute mince in things like bolognese or lasagna. Grilled portobello mushrooms make very nice burgers.

They don't taste like meat (for some people, that's a good thing :) ) so don't think of them as meat substitutes, but alternatives - a different food with its own yummy flavour. Dang, home made dahl with red lentils, milk and turmeric is so yum.

I'm a bit late with my reply, but I got a bad stomach after eating some Aldi chicken thigh fillets. I bought two packs, use by date was the 12th December. I opened the second pack on the 10th, and a foul smell came out, as well as lots of juice from the chicken. Absolutely terrible. I wonder how many food poisoning cases go undetected, because of Aldis poor handling of meat products. I don't buy meat there anymore.

I've noticed the milk only lasting 1 or 2days in aldi I also think they freeze their fridge items then defrost when putting on shelf a lot of the meat is mushy after cooking!! Also had cold meat chicken and sausages going out days before sell by date! Yeh really being put off by there foods recently.
