I will have a fight till the death with audit about whose DC have the more expensive hobby, I will warrant the pony, who costs approx £400 a month conservatively, and is a strong contributory factor why I post here Grin

However, seeing DD fly down the gallops today, at a pony racing day, even if I am bloody knackered now driving the horse box for 2 hours, up at crack of dawn, wash pony, brush pony, feed pony, load pony, train pony, and reverse backwards that sequence.

SOOOO pleased I was bothered to make chicken broth for the slow cooker as it was 7.30pm when we got in. DH is away. DS had been on his own all day bless him.

Spent £11 on racing goggles as DD's were too small, but also agreed she can do pony racing camp in May at £300, which is a MAJOR twist of the arm, given she does PC camp too each year.

Looks like DS has downloaded some books from Amazon too for about £8 in total but I try not to fuss about spends on books, given he's a 15 year old lad more easily found on his X-box.

Sorry about the cat girlie Not a cat person, but I definitely am a PET person, so I completely understand.

Passthecake30 · 17/02/2015 22:43

NK what about a mind map sort of thing?

I have an interview next wed, it's a drop in grade to what I was on but fingers x! Thou I have another application in where I would prefer more.

Spendy day, at the coast, £10 on slots, £30 Toby carvery (ds first time, apparently the "best place ever!")

NK5BM3 · 17/02/2015 22:50

Thanks people!

Yes I'm going for a strategic plan. Few words, but hard hitting, and then talking round them. I'm thinking two slides. One with the diagram, and the other one, similarly laid out but somehow have to connect the two. They aren't at all connected, but the interview panel seem to want the moon on a stick. So I shall give them that.

I've not done an interview in a while. No, I lie. I did one last year this time, but it was for my own job which I knew inside out - which helped to a certain extent. But didn't as I needed to be more strategic.

This job I'm going for I believe is going to need to be strategic. So I'm going that way. We shall see...

Passthecake30 · 17/02/2015 22:57

My interview consists of a test, a presentation and an interview. Lol at the term moon on a stick. ..I can relate!

MissMysticFalls · 17/02/2015 23:33

NK Good luck! A few thoughts from me having interviewed folk - if you're only doing a 10 min session, and only need 2 slides, consider not doing powerpoint at all. I have been more impressed with a candidate who didn't use powerpoint but talked to me, than those who used a PPT as a crutch - you just find yourself staring at the screen not listening to what's being said. If it needs to be a diagram could draw it on a whiteboard (bring your own whiteboard markers!) or flipchart paper, as you explain what your vision is (check either of those will be available). If you practice in advance then you'll look very good. Or if you definitely want to use PPT, then see if you can do what my friend did (became a friend after I gave her the job) and have it on your laptop so you can sit down cosily (and use tech that you can rely on!).
Or use images that illustrate your vision (rather than anything word-based).

MissMysticFalls · 17/02/2015 23:37

Pass and NK tracked down a Guardian article that includes the question I asked in my last interview (I got the job) - see number 10. This must be a rewrite of an old article because it was before 2011. Anyway, if you really want the job I think it's a great question. In my case, they said an area they were concerned about and it gave me the chance to give them some more information and examples.
questions to ask at end of interview

Passthecake30 · 18/02/2015 00:18

That's great miss, thanks for that

SpottyTeacakes · 18/02/2015 05:56

Need milk today and nappies. Might get dh to get them. Going to friends for coffee and to feed the ducks this morning.

Goodness glad I don't interviews like you lot, I would be a wreck.

Fuzzpig they won't refer me until I get all the bloods back.

I'm gong to make a bacon tomato pasta for dinner. Will make it up as I go along.

Pointlessfan · 18/02/2015 06:52

Going to get light bulbs today, hopefully not too expensive! Did Asda shop online last night using mysupermarket and saved £7. It's much easier to have prices compared for me, my maths isn't always up to it!

AuditAngel · 18/02/2015 07:11

I am happy to concede to Strong that the pony costs more than my DC's dancing. They do a big show every 2 years, between that they do a charity cabaret every year. The reason I am having to pay so much out this time is two fold: 1 we didn't do the last show so I don't have costumes to re-use, and 2 I don't see so I am paying extra (about £25 per costume) to have things made.

Usually their lessons cost £110 per half term between the three of them, which is 2-2.5 hours twice a week for the older ones for what is normally a 6 week half term, plus about 1.5 hours once a week for the little one. This is a lot cheaper than any other dancing lessons I gave found. I pay £6.25 per week for swimming for a 30 minute lesson, whereas dancing is about £4 for a good 2-2.5 hours per class.

There is a really good trade on second hand shoes, I bought DD1 some dance trainers in really good condition for £5. These were an extra, very much not needed, and I wouldn't have paid £35 for them which is generally the cost new. I also got 2 pairs of almost as new shoes for 2/3 of the new price, but they were immaculate. A size too big, so 2 pairs of insoles and cotton wool in the toe to make them fit until her feet grow!

In the 14 the DC have been dancing, I have had to buy uniform ( 5 t-shirts between the 3 at £10 each, plus the older 2 needed hoodies at £18) with these they wear black tracksuit trousers/leggings. For normal classes they don't need to wear uniform, just everything black, I try to keep their uniform for the occasions they have to wear it, such as at the theatre, or yesterday when their teacher requested uniform specifically. DD2 has had 3 pairs of shoes, but 2 of those are new because of the show, and after the show she can wear those until they are worn out.DS is on his 3rd and 4th pairs of proper dance shoes dye to needing specific colours for costumes, but I bought the white ones up a size to make them last, and the other are a grand me down from his cousin. The teacher is thoughtful about something's, trying to use cheap Primark shoes to go with costumes rather than proper dance shoes if she can, but the costumes are phenomenal. She doesn't like to compromise.

Other than main costumes, for Panto we had to provide tights (DD1 tore one pair and someone "borrowed" a pair and didn't return them but I don't know who to chase them back) and a leotard, plus white gloves so not too much. For the Lord Mayor's show black trousers (now used for uniform) and a black polo neck. For Hoseph they needed white Primark plimsolls £3 each and blue jeans, so they can use those again.

We have just hit a really expensive time, but I am grateful that yesterday we were lent a costume being used from before (that is 2 for DS that have been lent)

Spends yesterday £10 for a birthday party gift for DD1 to take, plus £11.75 buying 2 pairs of jeggings for DS to wear under a cowboy costume. Will get £5.75 back from the other mum for her sons pair.

Tuesday night I ordered 2 chefs jackets £26 and 2 pairs of trousers £16, but again half is for another boy and will get that back. Buying together we gave shared the delivery costs between us.

Wow, mega post!

NK5BM3 · 18/02/2015 07:17

Hi mystic, thanks for that. Wow did you really ask question 10??!

I woke up at about 3.30 am this morning and couldn't go back to sleep for 2 hrs. Crap. I was thinking about the interview and questions like that. Maybe you guys can help with this. The main reason why I am considering this job so seriously (even though it means travel for 1.5h and my current job is cushy as it's 5 min from home) has to do with the fact that I currently don't get much resource and support to do what I need to do. So although I think and know that I have achieved a lot considering the lack of assistance, I don't feel that I can do this long term. I've already done this solo for 1.5 years. The previous guy in my position had me as his deputy. I have no deputy and have more work.

So what I want to do is, ask really ask/say to them, if they are serious about doing this job properly, it needs to be resourced properly. By that, it means having a competent administrator who can take on some decisions and basically help rather than be told what to do.

This is a silly example but I think it explains it. It's like having a PA who would look into my calendar and note that I have a busy two weeks ahead, and will prep my paperwork for me to get me just on the move. This would be fab, compared to a PA who has to be told that I have 10 meetings tomorrow and will they get my paperwork in place? The former has initiative. The latter has to be told. If I have to tell you, then I don't see the point of having you there.

Any thoughts of how I can get that message across? I could possibly ask about the culture (from the article) and from there extrapolate how open they are to that question??

NK5BM3 · 18/02/2015 07:19

Oh and I will use ppt, but will use images and the like rather than just words. I have done 15 min presentations before but that's based on my research. 10 min on a vision? Heck - first I need to have a vision and to hear a vision on something that I don't really know about (because their organisational structure is not the same as mine) would be interesting...

AuditAngel · 18/02/2015 07:19

Aargh, just lost a massive post!

I'm very happy to concede that the pony is more expensive. Although I have paid out over £500 this month, the main show is every other year. It is more expensive for us this time round as we don't have costumes from before so I can't re-use I am having to buy from other people and also I don't sew so I am paying £25 per costume on average for them to be made up. I think next time round (if the keep going) I may invest in a sewing machine.

Generally their hobby is a very good deal. I pay £45 each per half term (usually 6 weeks) for the older DC which covers 2 lessons a week which are 2-2.5 hours each. I pay £6.25 per week for their 30 minute swimming lesson!

Their teacher is very showbiz, so the costumes are very dramatic, but she will scrimp on shoes, using Primark plimsolls at £3 when she can.

I have added a picture from the cabaret, but these costumes were fairly basic, will try to grab another from my Facebook account

Ok, another pic of DD2 (the one on the right) and some of her dancing buddies (hope none of the mum's mind if they see the pics -but they are on Facebook already) and DS trying on his suit

AuditAngel · 18/02/2015 07:26

Ok, a picture of DD2 in one of her costumes from cabaret (she is the little girl on the right (hope the other mums don't mind me posting, but it is already on Facebook) and DS n his white suit (which gets used a lot in the show either all or just trousers)

opalsandsilver · 18/02/2015 07:32

I have had a spendy few days due to having a visitor and having a family party to contribute to, but have made certain painless economies. Bought Aldi champagne and some perfectly nice champagne flutes from Oxfam, eleven for five pounds, which looked well at the party.

My friend and I bought a Marks and Spencer's dinner instead of going out which cost around fifteen pounds each for fillet steak, prossecco and lemon meringue pie. Could have done it cheaper, will try Aldi next time but still better than going out to eat.

We had a pound shop challenge and had great fun displaying our 'hauls'

Am pleased with my Waitrose card, able to have tea and a lemon tart in their cafe for less than two pounds.

AuditAngel · 18/02/2015 07:38

Here is a picture of DD2 (and friends) in oneof their costumes, she is the little one on the right. I hope the other mums don't mind if they see this, but it is already on Facebook.

AuditAngel · 18/02/2015 07:40

sorry, much as I love my kids, i wasn't trying to overload the thread, I thought the posts had got lost Blush

Passthecake30 · 18/02/2015 07:47

They are nice costumes audit. Won't be complaining about the £13 I've paid out for a costume for ds dance show anymore. What I'm not happy with is that he is just wearing it one day and that's it (tie, shirt and trousers combo)

Might take kids to soft play today. If they can stop coughing.

blueteapot · 18/02/2015 08:07

Audit your kids are very cute :) luckily we've a while before DS & DD get into the expensive hobbies!

NK I work in healthcare so I imagine my interview experience probably wouldnt help much - Im a flipchart girl and a 1 page handout at the end. In my baby brain haze Im not too sure how you would phase your question but Im sure some of these other guys are brainier than me :)

Frugal win on the car insurance yesterday, perservered and saved £250 through a combo of multicar policy and TCB Grin glad now I didnt just let it roll over out of sheer exhaustion lol. £7 to window cleaner, 80p on parking in town - deposited DDs gift money and DSs birthday money into their account. Also spent £4 in poundworld on baking supplies and binbags. Took some season inappropriate gift clothes for DD back to next so she now has £56 on a giftcard when she actually needs something - learnt my clothes lessons with DS!

Have a good day everyone xx

fuzzpig · 18/02/2015 08:09

Wonderful costumes and gorgeous children :o

So who's doing the new thread?

(Won't that be the fourth thread of 2015? Or the fifth?!)

needastrongone · 18/02/2015 08:31

Just off to work but Audit, your children look fab and you absolutely haven't overloaded the thread. I will comment further later but just saw piccies and had to comment Smile

SpottyTeacakes · 18/02/2015 08:34

I can't see the pictures on the app Angry

SpottyTeacakes · 18/02/2015 08:49
