It's worth knowing the cheapies that aren't nice enough to justify the cost saving...

For example

IMO Tesco's Value frozen peas are only good for soup. I find them too hard and powdery to really cut it with my bangers...

Sainsbury's Basics Apple juice in individual cartons (like the ones you get for kids) is not nice IMO. Tastes of artificial sweetener. The normal size cartons are fine.

Sainsbury's Basics Blackcurrant (& Apple?) squash has the same issue.

Any basics/value bread is a bit like cardboard. Better to go when stuff is reduced in price & stock up on Kingsmill etc for 30p for the freezer.

Doowrah · 16/11/2011 21:23

Morrisons value tinned tomatoes were vile in my spag bol the other week.

Yourefired · 16/11/2011 21:25

Never buy morrisons value ham. I mean it. Never.

mamasunshine · 18/11/2011 07:42

Sainsburys basic squash, tastes of chemicals. Sainsburys basic sweet and sour sauce in a jar - was awful!

Have been buying everything I can from the basic range recently and everything else so far has been brilliant!

BikeRunSki · 18/11/2011 07:54

Asda Smartprice Pasta sauce - revolting and tastes of artificial swweerners.
Asda Smartprice tuan flakes - stinky mush, even the cat refused it.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 18/11/2011 11:50

I was going to say sainsburys squash. They have it at our toddler group and its vile.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 29/11/2011 16:07

Sainsbury's Basics Ground Coffee. Bleugh.

Tesco stain remover (equivalent of Vanish). Put DDs nursery clothes in a concentrated solution overnight and it did nothing. Vanish is expensive but buying the cheaper alternative was a classic case of buy cheap, buy twice!

itstooearly · 18/12/2011 08:00

Sainsbury's basic beef stock cubes, 10p a pack, tastes of fish, awful.

MeltedAdventCalendarChocolates · 19/12/2011 21:55

I DISAGREE with tescos value peas. The only ones that actually taste like real peas, not the other processed tasting ones you get at double the price!

Tesco value cocoa pops... powdered cardboard pops!

lborolass · 19/12/2011 21:57

Also Tesco value rice crispies - totally vile, bought only for DCs to mess around and make crispie cakes. They are so awful the cakes went straight to bin.

jandymaccomesback · 01/01/2012 19:57

Tesco value frozen broccolli.

2BoysTooLoud · 02/01/2012 10:34

Tesco value tissues leave my ds with a sore nose. [Other discount tissues seem ok].
Tescos value muesli has about 3 raisins per packet.

Tesco value tissues are awful 2boys, I had to use 3 or 4 just to stop them from dissolving in my hand! Gross! Have now started buying tissues from home bargains, they're great value and cheap!

I also think that co-op juice is rubbish, supposed to be double strength but it's awfully weak and leaves that horrible residue in your mouth

I find the best stock cube are Tesco value and asda smart price pasta tastes good with a nice sauce

fuzzpig · 02/01/2012 10:51

Mum got me sainsbos Basics cream cheese once. It was really really awful - and then I noticed it had wheat fibre in it! WTAF? Gave us an excuse to throw it out though - DH is coeliac.

Wheat. In cheese. FFS.

Emmac50 · 02/01/2012 11:00

Frozen mince - anywhere its like greasy mush I hate it!!

PoultryInMotion · 02/01/2012 19:19

Asda smart price teabags - taste like piss

PeaceofCakeAndGoodWineToAllMN · 02/01/2012 19:21

How do you know what piss tastes like Poultry? Grin

TheArmadillo · 02/01/2012 19:28

I buy most smart price stuff.

Asda smart price salad cheese (i.e. knock off feta). Tastes of nowt.

Asda smart price stewing lamb - by the time I had removed the fat/gristle/bone I had less than 50% left so effectively doubled the price. I buy £4 worth of better quality now (same as I spent on the smart price stuff) and have no wastage.

I find smart price bread pretty inedible (and I like cheap mass produced white bread).

Smart price baby wipes - not too bad but are now only 1p per pack cheaper than the standard asda baby wipes which are better.

Smart price sausages - pretty much rusk with a hint of meat.

Smart price orange squash - I like my squash weak usually but even with a 50/50 mix with water you still couldn't taste anything.

marriednotdead · 02/01/2012 19:51

Sainsburys basics pasta sheets- bleurgh. Most of their basic stuff is great but they were vile.

PoultryInMotion · 02/01/2012 19:54

Do you know I almost wrote 'or what I imagine piss to taste like' but thought no-one would pick me up on it Grin Grin

janx · 02/01/2012 20:04

Morrisons rice crispies - they are pale alien poo

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 03/01/2012 15:02

Sainsbury's value rice crispies - vile!!! they have OIL in them and taste oily - GROSS!!

I second the PP that mentioned Sains's ground coffee. Yuck.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 17/01/2012 17:56

Aldi 29p tomato and herb pasta sauce. It mings. Grin Though to be fair, it was ok, mixed with a can of real tomatoes and spread on pizza as a topping. COuldn't stomach it with pasta though.
