Parents want me to do and kids to do covid test before visiting

AIBU for being a bit put out by this?
My brother is also visiting and he's really cautious about covid so it could be driven by him. There is no talk of them doing one.
AIBU to be a bit miffed?

Test and ask them to test too... unless you're not bothered about picking up Covid from them

Why so miffed? If they're refusing to test themselves that's steange, hypocritical and v unreasonable.

Test children too, nice treat afterwards. A few seconds minor discomfort

Fizzydog · 23/12/2022 18:14

Of course I'd test prior to visiting. Health reasons and the fact that the host requested it.

If you won't test, please don't lie to your host. Their house, their health, their rules.

RitaSueandBobtwo · 23/12/2022 18:19

YABVU - definitely do a test to give everyone piece of mind. But I would also expect everyone else to do one too.

Makes me laugh that ppl here will say test in case you’re asymptomatic but the test will only test positive for covid, what if you have an asymptomatic cold? Or asymptomatic flu? Does that not matter? Or does it dawn on you how ridiculous an asymptomatic cold is 🤦🏼‍♀️

Morgysmum · 23/12/2022 18:32

We did last year, when we wen to visit the in-laws. We are key workers, so we didn't want to pass covid onto them. We had our boosters a week before, to make sure we protected.
I know it's not such a big thing now, but with all the winter bugs around, I don't blame them, do it to put them at ease.

Jack80 · 23/12/2022 18:39

I would do one for peace of mind for all.

YDBear · 23/12/2022 18:47

This is one of those situation where you have to think about alternatives. You can take the test and go, or not take the test and not go. Not going because you refuse to take a lateral flow test seems a bit extreme. Is this the hill you want your relationship with your family to die on? Personally I would take the test, go and then have a heart to heart about covid hysteria.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/12/2022 18:49

I'd happily do one, and have before visiting a vulnerable friend unprompted.
High levels of Covid here at the moment

JustLyra · 23/12/2022 18:50

It’s utterly bizarre that people can’t see why some people would want people to test for something that they can test for whilst balancing the risks of other things that they can’t.

Just because we can’t test for some things doesn’t mean we should test for nothing.

fetchacloth · 23/12/2022 18:53

Lkydfju · 22/12/2022 12:57

What’s your issue? It wouldn’t bother me if someone asked for this

It wouldn't bother me either, I'm testing anyway before visiting elderly relatives.
It seems the responsible to do presently.

Bard6817 · 23/12/2022 18:56

I’d agree, but in the format - great idea, i think it’s a good idea for us to all get tested - when shall we do it, and share results? Want to leave anough time before xmas so we can get extra food in if any of us are negative.

If they come back and say just you guys…. however nicely they say it - i’d go back, with, oh…. let’s just leave it til next year. hope you have a fab day.

BabyDriversMummy · 23/12/2022 18:59

A Covid test is a great idea. However, some might argue that Strep.A and this years strain of Flu are just as concerning- and there aren’t Tests for either readily available to the general public (yet).

Your argument makes zero sense. You are saying that because you can't test for everything, it's worthless to test for covid.

That is like saying thar because there is no screening for brain cancer, there is no point in getting a mammogram.

Silly silly logic

Madamum18 · 23/12/2022 19:01

I'd just do the tests and go. Not worth any upset and I get why your parents might have health anxieties.

Alternatively if you are unhappy I suggest you tell them that its best not to come as you don't want to put anyone at any risk!

HowcanIhelp123 · 23/12/2022 19:25

There are several horrible things going around right now, most of which cannot be tested for.

I'd not go, you can test yourself and go drop things off but I wouldn't be putting my kids through the test. Any sniffle they get you'll be blamed for anyway.

Sure, why don't we all sell our souls to the devil since its more convenient that way?

Eh? No idea what your point is. The choice is visit or don't visit parents, do test or don't do test! Its not a battle with satan!!

U ok hun?

whatstheproblemguys · 23/12/2022 19:45

We've just tested positive and only have sore throats! So glad we tested as we were supposed to be going to see vulnerable grandparents.
It literally takes 2 mins and I did my 2 year old and 6 year old with no problems.

ILoveeCakes · 23/12/2022 19:47

Megifer · 23/12/2022 19:44

I'll put any amount of the Mumsnet glue up my nose before a covid test stick!

Pliudev · 23/12/2022 19:49

A week ago I have thought they were over cautious but my friend and her son both have covid and another is testing negative but ill. It seems to be back and think we all have to do whatever makes us feel comfortable.

AHG1234 · 23/12/2022 20:19

Just do it!!

Caelan2018 · 23/12/2022 20:30

I would be doing the test anyway to protect parents without been asked! Also I got covid in summertime after my toddler had surgery I got it sfter coming home I felt so ill for 9 days and we had a 7 week old at the time I have never had a headache like it ita no big deal to do a test all our kids 4 2 and 8 months have been tested they didn't even notice tbh

nopuppiesallowed · 23/12/2022 21:15

Covid can be very mild for some, but hospitalisations due to Covid are rising. My neighbour was taken into hospital with Covid and was very ill.
A brief test to put your parents' minds at rest? It's really not a big deal, is it?

It is frightening what 2 years of scaremongering and false facts have done to some people

This. Including apparently 80% of people on this thread 🙄
