Rise in numbers of cases of unprovoked blood clots since covid?

Does anyone know any stats regarding this? I’m interested in the amount of people in the U.K. who have been diagnosed with clots compared to pre covid times. I’m specifically interested in people who have been diagnosed with clots not necessarily linked to having (ie they don’t have covid at the time of the clot).

I’ve been googling and can’t find anything

Excess deaths in the UK are running about 12% to 15% above normal and most are cardiovascular. Might be a useful dataset to explore.

I have recently had a blood clot, no idea why. Haven't been in a long haul flight, none of the things that bring on clots. I am now on blood thinners for life... I had Covid last October.

Same here - but a week after my covid and flu jabs. DVT spread to my lungs and I'm lucky to be here apparently......very scary at the time.

muddlinthroughit · 04/12/2022 10:21

@Sagaris how scary
I was lucky that DH made me go to the GP when my leg got sore

CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 11:30

Thanks, I’d seen this but the figures quoted I think are just for the research. What does that equate to in a whole population?

Anecdotally I now know of four young women (20s) with pulmonary embolisms. One of them being my Dd who has no risk factors at all, not even on the pill.

Dd was just diagnosed with clots a couple of weeks ago, she had covid in the spring. Which blood thinners are you on? Dd is hoping she might not have to take them for ever but I suspect she will.

@CoffeeBoy I'm on rivaroxaban. I was on 15mg twice a day for 3 weeks and now take 20mg once a day
Because they couldn't give a reason for the clot they have decided I need to be on thinner's permanently
Warm your DD that her 1st period could be worse than usual !

Babyroobs · 04/12/2022 11:47

My lovely friend who was one of the fittest people I know died suddenly of a blood clot last October. Another young friend died suddenly of possible heart problems this march. Both in their early fifties. I know these things happen but both deaths felt really shocking as neither had had any significant problems. The same week that my first friend died, a woman who I had contact with on an internet help forum also died suddenly of a blood clot. I know this is just 3 people but it seems a lot for me to know 3 people who have died so suddenly in such a short space of time. My social circle really isn't huge. i would welcome some research. I worry about the covid jab and after effects of covid.

CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 11:51

Thanks @muddlinthroughit hope you’re doing ok on the drugs. Did they test you for clotting disorders. Stuff like factor v Leiden? Dd already has horrendously heavy periods. 🙈

CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 11:53

@Babyroobs im so sorry about your friends. Like you say it seems a lot. My understanding is the risk of clots is higher from covid than from the vaccine.

OP posts:
CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 11:54

However if people are having clots due to the vaccine or covid it then seems overkill to put them on blood thinners for life. I get the better safe than sorry approach but the drugs aren’t without side effects or risks

I've got long Covid and have had two blood clots in my medical history and I am on a blood thinner at a preventative measure and will likely remain on them rest of my life. The inflammatory response of your immune system to Covid is the cause-my inflammatory markers spiked up so my doctors took action.

EKGEMS · 04/12/2022 12:17

Believe me you do NOT want a blood clot-it is awful-I developed one from a central venous line and a second during cancer treatment-I've seen fatalities from blood clots as a nurse and I don't feel blood thinners are overkill

CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 12:53

No absolutely, she doesn’t want another clot. Just seems a shame if the clot was provoked by covid that she may need to take medication for the rest of her life if actually her re clotting risk away from covid isn’t any higher. But there seems to be no way of telling. 🤷‍♀️

@CoffeeBoy do you mind me asking what your DD first synptoms were?

CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 14:08

Not at all. Chest pain and shortness of breath. The chest pain woke her up in the night but then improved so she went back to sleep but it came on again mid morning.

she had also had the pain a few weeks earlier but the doctor said she’d probably pulled a muscle.

shes worried about staying on the blood thinners as she reckons they’ve made her feel really weak.

DH had a stroke ( ischaemic - blood clot) in February. In hindsight he had had a few TIAs, that lasted seconds, in the lead up. He had had Covid 5 months earlier and the Covid vax 3 mnths earlier. Apart from being a smoker he was otherwise fit. They were unable to find any other cause apart from smoking and were surprised he had had a stroke at 60.
There is a warning out re increased incidence of strokes in younger people post Covid.
He now takes clopidogrel and anti hypertensives. Although his blood pressure was very high when he was admitted it is frequently the result of having a stroke not necessarily pre existing.
He was very lucky and had the tPA which pretty much reversed the stroke symptoms.
We both had Covid a month ago but so far he’s been fine. Hopefully the clopidogrel is protecting him.

Which blood thinner is she on? I was on Apixaban which made me feel like rubbish - I'm also on lots of other meds currently but I worked out it was probably that. You can ask whoever is looking after her (I tried the hospital consultant but they referred me back to my GP) to change the prescription.

CoffeeBoy · 04/12/2022 18:34

@Sagaris shes on rivaroxiban. Thanks for that, hadn’t crossed my mind to ask about other ones to see if she tolerates them better

My dh had a clot i his leg last year - 3 weeks post vaccine.
Was told it was probably this but officially couldn't or wouldn't say.

Seasidemumma77 · 04/12/2022 18:40

Had covid twice. Both times had no obvious symptoms, in fact felt absolutelynormal, but was covered in burst blood vessels and bruises. Both times had blood tests, which showed I had lots of microscopic blood clots.

Iheartmysmart · 04/12/2022 18:50

My older sister had a DVT not long after her covid booster and my younger sister has just been in hospital with multiple clots on both lungs, again not long after her booster. They are now on blood thinners indefinitely. Might be coincidence but I’m not having my booster after seeing what they’ve both been through. Neither has ever tested positive.

WithOneLook · 04/12/2022 18:58

I had an unprovoked DVT before covid when I was 26. I was tested for loads of blood/clotting disorders and nothing was found. I tried several blood thinners and felt naff. Transfered to warfarin and feel a million times better.
