Is covid growing rampant again

Prizlime · 05/10/2022 13:45

I read an article online and it says it is growing. Another article says that a newer symptom for starting off is a sore throat.

I am in work and my colleague and boss both have sore throats.

I'm supposed to be going away on holidays. I feel fine to be honest but the idea of getting sick right now or withing the next week doesn't appeal to me.

It's the time of year for seasonal colds. For the vast majority of people who are vaccinated covid is just another strain of a cold now. Most people aren't even bothering to do tests now

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 05/10/2022 13:52

Yes.

Despite the number of tests carried out increasing by 12%, the number testing positive is up by 42%, which is a substantial real increase

Hospital admissions are up nearly 48%

Deaths not yet rising - about 50 per day

If you don't want to catch it, then wear a mask, improve ventilation wherever possible, don't be indoors with other people other than when it's necessary

checks the year

GreyBlossom · 05/10/2022 13:59

Yes, there's loads of it about atm. Lots of people aren't testing now (because you're not supposed to) but those people I know who have, seem to have been ill for 3/4 days before the test shows positive.

I had it in June and had a sore throat for 2 days before I got "ill".

ATM I have a temperature and a raging headache, but I'm assuming it can't be covid as I had it so recently. DS has just started with a sore throat though....

I have big plans this weekend. All these things need to go away!

GreyBlossom · 05/10/2022 14:00

I don't think it is "just a cold". Thankfully it does seem to be much less dangerous, but I've never been as ill with a cold as I was in June (that's after 3 vaccinations) and it took weeks before I felt back to full strength.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 05/10/2022 14:07

@GreyBlossom - you can get covid again in as little as 40 days, though it's much more common for immunity to wear off after 3-4 months. So yes, it's perfectly possible you have covid.

So do think about how you might need to alter your plans to avoid putting more vulnerable people at risk (either medically more vulnerable themselves, or with caring responsibilities to the more vulnerable, or who visit residents in care homes, or who would be economically vulnerable if they needed time off work)

Well to be honest at this stage nobody else gives a rats ass any more about germs and passing on their doses. It's just a sore throat. Many people lived with sore throats for years. If it progresses. The vulnerable just needs to isolate if they don't want to catch it.

Yes. We swab every patient who comes in via ambulance in our ED symptomatic or not and have seen a huge increase in the past week. Definitely not as severe and havent been admitting to ICU or requiring as much oxygen. It will just be like another seasonal illness now

GreyBlossom · 05/10/2022 14:16

I'm expected to go to work, where yes I will come into contact with many people who have their own vulnerabilities and will see family with the same. I'm not putting my social plans off.

Likewise DS. He won't be paid. If he's well enough to work, he'll work.

I followed all the rules at very great personal detriment (I was unable to visit dying DH in hospital while they were partying at Downing Street). I will absolutely not be going back there.

Mariposista · 05/10/2022 14:26

I wouldn’t know. I don’t test.

What are you seeing in relation to covid. Are people testing positive every few months? It says about 40 days or 3 to 4 months? If so what are symptoms like.

I had covid in the summer and it was like a flu. Body aches and pains and fever and cold symptoms and loss of taste and smell. That was the worst because it lingered for up to two weeks.

Malfi · 05/10/2022 14:28

Yes, it’s on the increase. Those I know who have had it this time round are much sicker than when they had it previously.

justasking111 · 05/10/2022 14:32

It's knocking about in university again hardly surprising with all the inbound flights students arrive on. Schools pretty good. Workplaces hit and miss. It's going to be like flu this year I suspect

Shahira78 · 05/10/2022 14:35

I had a heavy cold (and a sore throat) a few weeks ago and tested negative

Blix · 05/10/2022 14:39

a newer symptom for starting off is a sore throat.

It's not new, it's a sign that the immune system is fighting off infection. Pretty much the whole population have now been vaccinated or had covid, mostly both.
That means when you are infected you get basic cold symptoms.
I would test myself because I qulify for treatment but most people don't need to. Just keep away from sick or elderly people like you would with any infection.

I had covid a year ago and was seriously ill in hospital. Then again last week. This time round after multple vaccines it was a bad cold.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/10/2022 14:41

I had Covid last week. Started with a very mild tickle in the throat but it developed into the worst sore throat I have ever had. Completely unable to eat for several days. Also had a high temp for 3 days and a dry cough at night that made sleeping impossible. However this week it has gone and I feel OK, but it has left me with no taste or smell. I would not want to pass it on to people. I tested very strongly positive from the very beginning.

NoNameIdeas · 05/10/2022 14:50

Currently on day 6 of Covid, how I wish it was just a sore throat! Has completely wiped me off my feet; head ache, poor breathing, horrendous cough, whole body aching, no smell or taste...oh, and that sore throat. I know not everyone gets it the same but it's definitely not just 'another cold'

Why are people moving about knowingly being sick and just passing it on?
I went to work today to find sore throats all around.

The home covid tests are hit and miss.

At this stage I wouldn't normally worry but I have my first holiday since 2000 and fucking 19 and then this. I can't enjoy one week off.
I'm fucking raging.

The one thing I learned in the summer time and indeed throughiut covid is to look after myself. If I get sick again. That's it I don't care. I'm not going to isolate and if I can stand at all I will pass it on.

Did you have covid before?

OP posts:
Prizlime · 05/10/2022 14:59

I think covid starts off mild but there is potential for it to worsen and its great now its now sending as much people to hospital. Its still a sickness for 1/2 and not nice.

It's during the early days when it's mildish and vague its being ignored as a cold or just a sore throat and just a headache and just a cold and it's being passed on.

Yes. I know so many with it currently. I went out last week with 15 of us, I’m the only one who didn’t catch it.

colleagues are dropping like flies. At Dh’s work they’ve gone back to wfh as had so many cases last week.

interestingly I found the gov website yesterday with up to date figures and in my area of the city it says 6 people had covid last week. But I know 20! I’ve asked friends if they’ve reported it. Nobody has, they didn’t realise they could do.
