Still no air filters in schools?

Is anyone else really hacked off that there are still no air filters in schools??

The kids don’t spread it / don’t get sick from covid nonsense narrative has been replaced with cases are low due to school holidays (so much nicer when covid knew to wait at the school gates!) but the government are still refusing to do something so simple which could make schools safer.

Its like they don’t want to admit it’s worth avoiding repeat covid infections so therefore have to do nothing to stop/slow the thread and risk inevitable questions.

Even if it just slows it - every covid infection is a roll of long covid etc risks - why do they seem so keen to spread it round asap.

Looking at the protocol, 3 arms in 30 primary schools. So 10 schools in each arm? And only primary? That's a v small sample size.

JanglyBeads · 29/08/2022 23:23

Yup.

Out of interest - are you wanting stand alone air filters in the classrooms (about £180-£200 for decent quality)

or fully fitted interval systems similar to having air conditioning installed?

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 31/08/2022 14:05

It was calculated at about £140m to put a hepa in every classroom. It's costing about £1.5bn a year (IFC) at moment in LC lost earnings (don't think that includes additional lost earnings from cutting hours/stopping work to provide care and/or take on duties for ill family member).

Does that include the installation costs and the labour?

What about their electricity usage of actually using them?

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 31/08/2022 14:26

Not sure how much it costs to plug something in and open a box. I'd say negligible. Electricity - will depend on provider. Not sure how much additional electricity it costs to print packages of work for kids unable to attend school though either.

You're assuming that kids are so unwell that they have to stay at home in bed... Lots of kids get it so mildly that they can continue with their normal routine.

Iamnotthe1 · 31/08/2022 15:53

Where they then spread it to other children who may or may not be off unwell and may or may not serve as further vectors of transmission and so on and so on.

But, again, effective ventilation, especially when provided by filters, is about much much more than Covid.

I assume both actually, along with a host of other possibilities beyond (hospitalisation etc) and in between for the acute phase. Longer term issues (the ones we know about so far) can obviously occur no matter what the severity of the initial infection was.

Yes, but not just for covid. Our school has been back for a week (Scotland). Totally normal and mitigation free. Everybody caughing and sneezing, overcrowded classrooms, no ventillation, no cleaning, whole familes crammed into stuffy drop off spaces. DD is miserable with a cold/throat virus already. It would be nice if schools were healthier environments in general to prevent the constant cycle of illness that is disruptive to education even when it's not covid.

Randomly posting here after seeing a current thread on the same topic. Can’t believe that they’ve still not done anything!
