Still no air filters in schools?

wondersun · 26/08/2022 00:03

Is anyone else really hacked off that there are still no air filters in schools??

The kids don’t spread it / don’t get sick from covid nonsense narrative has been replaced with cases are low due to school holidays (so much nicer when covid knew to wait at the school gates!) but the government are still refusing to do something so simple which could make schools safer.

Its like they don’t want to admit it’s worth avoiding repeat covid infections so therefore have to do nothing to stop/slow the thread and risk inevitable questions.

Even if it just slows it - every covid infection is a roll of long covid etc risks - why do they seem so keen to spread it round asap.

We all have limited time, so why on this thread a parent happy with their childrens school and the education they are receiving - somehow profoundly selfish?

Conversely, though, you must allow teachers - and others - who are profoundly UNHAPPY with what they see being provided for children at the moment or in the predictable near future to rise up and protest about what they are seeing, even if you do not see the reason to do so yourself yet?

Endlesslypatient82 · 28/08/2022 15:23

I don’t believe the issue of this thread - air filters is one that warrants teachers to “rise up”

other issues - I have made no comment on their approach

I've given up expecting the government to ever do anything about it tbh. If it was going to happen it would have been done many months ago. Like everything else they talked about - catch up provision, laptops and devices for those without, tbh any form of support. It either didn't happen, was reduced it happened way too late. For example we eventually received some of the laptops several weeks after the 2021 laptop so far too late and a pointless exercise, especially as we never got the data packs with them either.

I'm cv and teach. I shielded initially for a bit but then just decided to take my own chances my way. I have had 4 vaccines, due another soonish and have access to anti viral medication if I need it - had it last time and it was much improved, especially compared to the first time when I ended up in hospital, with long term health issues and life long additional medication for covid complications.

I spent last winter frozen and I pain due to having windows open. Fingerless clothes, coat and scarf in the classroom just led to me needing more and more medication to combat the pain from my joints. The children were still catching it and spreading it, as were staff. And the heating was working overtime to deal with open windows. It's too dear to do that this year!

So we are just working as normal and hopefully cases will be lower this time. And this time I know how to access the anti vitals much quicker, and have covid tests at home available if I need to confirm it to get them.

I'm bit prepared to freeze and teach in my winter outfit clothes again, that's for sure!

Not

cantkeepawayforever · 28/08/2022 15:49

Have you read my posts? Where have I even hinted at this?

You have mocked mn teachers fir raising their concerns, and stated that you enjoy irritating them. It doesn’t quite match with a profession of support for teachers who seek to campaign through awareness raising. Someone who supported teachers unhappy with what they see some children having to experience wouldn’t do that.

It’s endless “concerns” and then anger at anyone not sharing their concern

Endlesslypatient82 · 28/08/2022 15:53

I’ll leave you to focus on all these concerns. Meanwhile here… my children excited to be heading back to school

Endlesslypatient82 · 28/08/2022 15:53

And that makes me happy!

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2022 16:14

I suppose it astounds teachers that parents aren’t concerned or care that our education system is going to end up not much better than childcare with the funding cuts. That they are not angry that the Government don’t give the same priority to education that other countries do.

Many countries have much smaller class sizes than us already, some of our classes will have to double in size to cope with lack of funding. And parents don’t seem to care

BlueRidge · 28/08/2022 16:23

"And parents don’t seem to care"

Well, until their child gets disappointing exam results, which will also be blamed on teaching staff. And there'll be posters on here asking, as has happened before, "if things were this bad, why didn't you start a campaign to inform?"

So any teacher not campaigning for better care for the elderly “doesn’t care” about their parents?

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2022 17:09

@Endlesslypatient82 most people worry about care for the elderly and don't criticise care workers coming on here to say how bad their workload is or how bad care of the elderly can be. But as soon as a teacher comes on to say how bad things are in schools, many people don't seem to want to know and indeed criticise the teachers for moaning

cantkeepawayforever · 28/08/2022 17:11

I look at it as analogous to the cost of living crisis.

There are experts who have known it has been coming for some time, and gave done their best to prepare people and influence those able to take action.

There are those who are directly impacted immediately but who are largely not influential. They include the most vulnerable - elderly, poor, disabled.

Thereare those who are in positions to do something, or significant enough to have influence, who are largely not directly and personally impacted but unless they take notice and do things nothing will happen.

In education, I would say teachers and heads are in the first group. If nobody else acts until they are personally affected, then those worst and first affected - the most vulnerable in society - will suffer more than they have to.

cantkeepawayforever · 28/08/2022 17:20

(And it would obviously be unacceptable for someone to sneer at cost of living experts or someone struggling by saying ‘well, MY family is ok and happy’)

noblegiraffe · 28/08/2022 17:21

I think someone is being disingenuous.

pinklavenders · 28/08/2022 18:08

*In the UK you’re free to board a packed train without wearing a mask, and even if you’re knowingly positive.

I don’t think air filters in school would do much of a difference to Covid spreading around the country. Other settings would need restrictions first.*

I agree. Also, I doubt we can afford such spending right now!

Scandicheek · 28/08/2022 21:32

our next pm will either be Rishi (who has conceded schools should never have closed) or Liz (cutting taxes). Neither seem to have air filtration in schools high on their agenda! It’s just not going to happen. As a parent, I’d love more investment in schools, but air filters would be pretty much bottom of my list!! Both my kids have had covid, and I’m sure they’ll get it again. If £x million is pledged to education. Please make it something worthwhile for children and not to appease the unions.

wondersun · 28/08/2022 22:18

I’m honestly baffled by people’s relaxed approach to catching covid again and again…

There are so many studies now saying it can cause organ damage, cause auto immune disorders and that every infection is a roll of the dice.

Air filters would reduce viral load and the chance of infection. Asking for clean air, expecting clean air is no different to expecting clean water.

Add into this, sickness costs money - be it paying for supply or parents staying home with poorly kids. We need to stop using our schools as infection hubs.

It will also reduce other diseases and improve learning ability. Sorry haven't got a link to the research but there's lots of it showing these effects.

Yep. An all round win win. As a country we are letting the rich continue to line their pockets while children go without. There is money for air filters and for schools. The government just don’t care enough about the people they’re meant to be serving.

Really? How much?

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2022 08:29

People saying there's no money for anything need to explain how Boris just spent £54 million on some drones for Ukraine.

Where did that money come from? A magic money tree?

JanglyBeads · 29/08/2022 08:45

Yup, it's all about priorities.
