Still no air filters in schools?

wondersun · 26/08/2022 00:03

Is anyone else really hacked off that there are still no air filters in schools??

The kids don’t spread it / don’t get sick from covid nonsense narrative has been replaced with cases are low due to school holidays (so much nicer when covid knew to wait at the school gates!) but the government are still refusing to do something so simple which could make schools safer.

Its like they don’t want to admit it’s worth avoiding repeat covid infections so therefore have to do nothing to stop/slow the thread and risk inevitable questions.

Even if it just slows it - every covid infection is a roll of long covid etc risks - why do they seem so keen to spread it round asap.

I think the time for increased ventilation has passed, honestly.

Just like the time for covid catch-up has passed.

Don't fund schools properly for long enough and people will only focus on the most recent unfunded thing (this year: teacher pay rises and energy costs).

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2022 11:36

Will you still be happy if your Primary aged child ends up in a class of over 40 children as they can’t afford to replace a class teacher and have to join classes together?

Well… no. I wouldn’t.

and if I got even the slightest hint from my childrens school that this was on the cards….then I would “rise up” in earnest!

Endlesslypatient82 · 28/08/2022 11:41

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2022 11:33

So if one of your Secondary school children (non Private) wanted to study a subject and couldn’t because the school have had to drop that subject due to funding or if their Maths teacher leaves and they end up being taught by a non-Maths specialist as they can neither afford to replace the teacher or can’t recruit a maths specialist, will you still be happy?

Again, no

you can keep on presenting me with situations that may happen in the future but until the school actually gives even the slightest teeniest tiniest whiff that this is on the cards - I am not going to get my knickers in a twist about it

noblegiraffe · 28/08/2022 11:42

So you think that those situations are worth getting knickers in a twist about yet you have slated me for posting on MN that that is the sort of thing that is happening?

Neverfullycharged · 28/08/2022 11:43

When there are threads on here considering private education, everyone piles on insisting there is no difference.

Better grades at private are explained by the fact they are selective (they aren’t - not all of them) and they are crammed full of anecdotes about oxbridge attending state school pupils. All you need is motivation and interested parents.

But then on these threads actually money does seem to make a difference.

Which is it?

noblegiraffe · 28/08/2022 11:43

Fuck knows what they think they are paying for then.

Too small, incorrectly targetted and too late.

Tackling the issue in one school after the tipping point has already been crossed would do nothing. In fact, the only way it could be solved in one school acting alone would be robbing Peter to pay Paul and making other children suffer (ones whose parents are less likely to "kick off) to satisfy another set of more vocal parents.

The deliberate underfunding of education for the last 12 years is something which must be addressed on a national level.

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2022 11:45

So you are not concerned that this already happening in other schools. Do you not think it will be too late to rise up about it when it actually happens in your DCs’ schools

If you wouldn’t be happy why do you not understand that teachers and unions are not happy about it now

Maximo2 · 28/08/2022 11:48

It’s ‘I’m alright, Jack’ in spades. ‘I am fine, my children are fine’ and, crucially ‘you need to stop moaning, get off these threads’, but then ‘WOE BETIDE THE SCHOOL THAT EVEN THINKS ABOUT FUCKING WITH ME!

Head in the sand, fingers in ears, and any other metaphor you can think of for a poster who isn’t bothered about anyone else’s kids but their own - and then, watch out! Seen it all before multiple times - you are part of the problem.

I’m a single parent

my children are happy and healthy

I am too

I don’t go around actively pursuing dark shadows. And I’m afraid I don’t have the time or inclination to start getting angry about other schools

toomuchlaundry · 28/08/2022 12:00

But you don’t have to moan at teachers who are trying to help all children and are trying to ensure all children have a good education and schools have adequate funding

Then don’t open and post on a thread that isn’t specifically about your dc’s school!

So you’ve never seen a thread along the lines of ‘I am considering private school for my children’ and people reply saying there’s no difference, their children attend a brilliant state school, bright children will do well anywhere?

It was in Covid chat room
Popped up on Active
I am shopping around for an air filter (prezzie for sis with smelly rats as pets!)
clicked on it
got sucked in
made a coffee
wasted more time

and now I absolutely must start on Sunday lunch! 😂

Maximo2 · 28/08/2022 12:14

Hilarious 🙄

Fixed that for you.

noblegiraffe · 28/08/2022 12:17

I want to know how you advanced searched and found me being angry about the state of education, particularly during covid because when I do a search on my username I get a bunch of people asking me maths questions.

Has advanced search been fixed?

cantkeepawayforever · 28/08/2022 12:36

The thing is, schools don't tell parents this kind of thing.

They don't say 'oh, your child was 'taught' by a TA today' or 'we had a longer lunchbreak while we sorted out cover' or 'your child's class was mixed with another today, and taught by the one remaining teacher for a bit' or 'by the way, Mr X is actually only qualified in PE, not Maths' or 'We just about had 1 adult per class yesterday so the school remained open. Only 3 of them were teachers, 2 were lunchtime supervisors and one was the caretaker.'

They just do the swan thing. 'Everything's fine' on the surface (it's a professional characteristic, also a protective mechanism against parental backlash). It's one of the reasons why teachers on MN get a hard time, because here we post our lived experience from one side of the school door, while parents post about their perception of their own school from the outside.

So by the time the school TELLS you how bad it really is, unless you have an unusually courageous head, it will be well past the point of no return. Waiting until the school tells you to worry is like waiting for someone to tell you to move away from the volcano just as the lava reaches your door.

JanglyBeads · 28/08/2022 12:53

Hear hear, @cantkeepawayforever

Mammyloveswine · 28/08/2022 12:56

LegArmpits · 26/08/2022 00:13

I'm a teacher and I couldn't care less.

Same...I don't think it's particularly bad now for the vast majority..I had it along with my son last week (only tested as was due to attend a baby shower and had felt a bit "off" otherwise I wouldn't have bothered).

Wasn't even as bad as a cold! Knackered and headachy, little one had a temp and was vomiting. But a few days and we felt fine! Still stayed in for the week though (well in the garden too!) because I'm not a dick.

JanglyBeads · 28/08/2022 13:19

Be grateful you or your loved one are not in the exceptionally vulnerable group which is still having to shield.

@noblegiraffe is absolutely right.

Yes, I have seen it, and it's daft. I've seen people recently saying 'oh no my kid is going to be disadvantaged by going to a private school when it comes to Oxbridge offer time so I'll take them out and send them to state sixth form then they'll be more likely to get a place.'

Like WTF. Perhaps you might want to check if the state sixth form will actually be fully staffed for your DC's chosen subjects, or that they'll even be running the course before assuming that contextual offers are made for no reason whatsoever.

So you expect a single working parent, available time is… sketchy.

very happy with her childrens school

indeed my children very happy with their school

to rise up?

not going to happen.

At the point at which i get a whiff that my children are being short changed or not happy - then I will “rise up”

I could bring up hundreds of thousands of articles about the deplorable care of low income elderly people and worsening crisis. I campaign and fund raise passionately on this issue. Why? Because I saw first hand how appalling it was for my father.

We all have limited time, so why on this thread a parent happy with their childrens school and the education they are receiving - somehow profoundly selfish?

Endlesslypatient82 · 28/08/2022 15:05

Oh and we can’t even say we are happy without it being

”the teachers are putting on a front”
”just you wait for what’s coming”
”oh so your children are ok, so that means everything is great. Selfish!”

It is like even a hint of a parent being happy with their child’s school and the education system in this country irritates the hell out of mumsnet teachers (but it does make it all the more enjoyable to express my satisfaction!)
