Pneumonia of unknown origin in Argentina.

www.newscientist.com/article/2336438-what-we-know-about-the-mysterious-pneumonia-in-argentina/

Thought I'd share this with the group. It's interesting to see how they're managing it and if lessons have been learned from the early days of covid.

JanglyBeads · 04/09/2022 14:55

It's now been identified as a rare form of Legionnaire's, hasn't it?

I'm glad the most vulnerable are getting boosters but given that best protection only lasts a few weeks, won't it have worn off by the winter and inevitable post christmas and new year wave?

sirfredfredgeorge · 05/09/2022 18:11

@containsnuts The vaccine is still very effective at preventing serious outcomes, so there is that.

However I do agree on timing, the flu vaccine reportedly typically protects against infection at all after a delay, so the most vulnerable being flu vaccinated early makes sense, but as you imply the covid vaccine protects only very short term from infection, so it would make more sense to align it with a peak - however I suspect a lot of the peak would come from timing of when vaccines wane, so there may not be any point at all - we don't have enough seasonality at all in covid for it to be anything else.

Perhaps the results of the omicron laced booster will be better than expected though.

Children turning 5 from this month onwards are no longer eligible for the covid vaccine. Was this change announced?

The uptake was never that great and I suppose most people who want their DCs vaccinated will have done it by now (or the kids have had covid and survived). They admit the vaccine only works a short while and there never seemed to be a plan for 2nd or booster doses so maybe they've just given up and feel it's no longer worth it?

What happened to giving people the choice though? I wonder if it will be available privately?

Here's an update on new variants from Tom Peacock.

Ds (15yo but CV) has been called for his 4th jab.
Unfortunately there don't seem to be any appointments though.

update for health metrics in England; although contextualising first with the ONS survey figs published this Monday but presumably back to the standard Friday tomorrow. Not that I've actually checked. ONS survey results heading in the right direction still. Not much above this time last year.

but in the wider picture numbers still very significantly lower than this time last year.
