Can someone explain to me New Zealand?

Sorry for the ignorance/naivety here but can someone explain to me the reasonings behind such extreme lockdown measures in NZ? At the beginning of the pandemic they're approach was fully accepted but surely now with vaccines and omnicrom being a 'milder' form of covid they have to start setting sense? Is it about the health system? I understand there's a severe lack of ICU beds but is locking down so much really better for health? Can anyone explain it to me please?

Following w interest. Does anyone know what their proposed exit strategy is?

XenoBitch · 27/01/2022 20:49

Hopelessly aiming for Zero Covid

Porcupineintherough · 27/01/2022 20:50

Seriously? Forever?

MauisLeftNipple · 27/01/2022 20:52

We are not locked down. We are at "Red" under the traffic light system. Basically, large gatherings (over 100) are restricted. 1m distancing required. Otherwise everything is open and business as usual. Many organisations choosing to WFH however.

More of a concern is the discussion just on the radio that they may have to ration LFT/RAT and PCR tests, as they are unlikely to be able to meet demand. People may have to assume they have covid and isolate accordingly. This is from a lab manager, not govt, but rather concerning.

Basically, govt only had one strategy for dealing with covid and are now on the back foot.

Are you having to isolate for 24 days if you test positive?

Sorry I didn't really mean 'lockdown' but just the extreme isolations and restrictions on people entering/leaving the country. It just doesn't seem sustainable?

I saw that on the news today

Katya213 · 27/01/2022 21:01

Have they opened their borders yet? I remember a while back they were closed as my neighbour was upset he couldn't see his newborn grandchild.

user1471453601 · 27/01/2022 21:02

65 deaths, in total, during the pandemic. Could that be the reason?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 27/01/2022 21:04

Pride. They can't back down now can they?

GiveMeNovocain · 27/01/2022 21:06

1m distancing is not a minor restriction

XenoBitch · 27/01/2022 21:08

What are the restrictions in NZ right now?

blameitonthecaffeine · 27/01/2022 21:38

Does the gatherings of more than 100 just mean 100 people known to each other gathering together? Or does it mean no theatres, concerts, night clubs, sports events etc?

Thhhhheeeeelong · 27/01/2022 21:44

Someone please tell me because I've been locked out for my own home for two years now....

Thhhhheeeeelong · 27/01/2022 21:47

Boarders are shut. There is a lottery for very few places to get into the country. Basically you have no chance of getting in even if your family are dying. It's a complete @uck up of human rights for the 1 million kiwi citizens based outside of the country.

I think NZ's approach pre vaccine made perfect sense ie close the borders and see if a vaccine/treatments can be developed. But that's happened now and clearly COVID is going nowhere. Would it really be seen as "backing down" to open the border again? I guess, if you are not planning on travelling, it's not that attractive a prospect ..
Dghgcotcitc · 27/01/2022 21:55

What I don’t get is how they get out of red restrictions same conversation as here, restrictions bring down cases while in place but afterwards they rise! If you are doing something while in place - vaccinating, introducing track and trace, that could take the strain. But now they are left with having to keep the restrictions as they are vaccinated and have a very good track and trace there is nothing left to take the strain when restrictions are over. So they are left wit perminant restrictions or higher cases when they end

HermioneWeasley · 27/01/2022 21:56

24 days isolation for close contacts. It’s insane. Ardem has completely lost the plot.

FrostyGirl66 · 27/01/2022 22:05

And if they ever do open back up, they'll have a massive surge of cases because they've locked down for so long.

IcedPurple · 27/01/2022 22:11

No, and nor are the extremely tight border controls. NZ supposedly has a higher proportion of its most educated citizens living abroad than any other developed nation. So shutting themselves up for 2 years, with no end in sight, is a huge deal.

Didn't they open up some sort of travel corridor with Oz for a while? What happened to that?

Hollyhead · 27/01/2022 22:11

24 days isolation!!!!

IcedPurple · 27/01/2022 22:12

My reply above should have been to @GiveMeNovocain

Lolamento · 27/01/2022 22:14

Are people happy with the government about this? Sounds terrible and abusive.

Exhausteddog · 27/01/2022 22:18

Who funds the 24 day isolations??Confused
