Quick poll: how many people are still wearing masks in your area?

223 replies

Monsterathai · 27/01/2022 16:01

I'll start! I'm in North Yorkshire and prior to today it has been almost 100% mask compliance. It was more 70%-ish here today following the mandate being lifted. Where do you live (city or county) and what's it like where you are?

P.S: if you think this is a boring topic, irrelevant or if you're sick of talking about masks then please feel free not to read any further.... and no, I don't have anything better to do Grin

@SamphiretheStickerist
I'm definitely not going to cover my face forever more to ease strangers irrational fears, no.
You enjoy that though.

Tynetime · 27/01/2022 18:23

Suffolk almost everyone in supermarket.

MulticatHouse · 27/01/2022 18:24

Legal requirement where we are, in all public places. Has been for nearly 2 years now. We are used to it.

MichelleScarn · 27/01/2022 18:24

I have..you have said *remonstrating with those who choose to flex (so basically practice their) rights
verb:remonstrate;3rd person present:remonstrates
make a forcefully reproachful protest.

"he turned angrily toremonstrate withTommy"

So forcefully protesting their 'flexing' of their rights?

Yeah! I understand that impulse. It's far easier to pretend other people don't matter, or should make their own different decisions, so that we don't have to inconvenience ourselves for any moments of any day.

WellTidy · 27/01/2022 18:26

Loads. I was in M&S at lunchtime earlier and there was only one person not wearing a mask. It was really busy.

SamphiretheStickerist · 27/01/2022 18:27

Yes Michelle. In public too. Real life.

I notice you didn't take any umbrage at the behaviour being objected to. Just someone finding it rude.

pollygartertidywife · 27/01/2022 18:29

I haven't seen anyone in a shop without. They probably know that the decision to do away with them was against all public health recommendations and was purely a political decision made by what used to be a populist prime minister desperate to do something that makes a section of the population happy... that section that have no idea about a virus that is highly virulent.

Londonlassy · 27/01/2022 18:29

Everyone. It’s compulsory here in NSW.

SummerBluez · 27/01/2022 18:30

@SamphiretheStickerist
Why would I prioritise complete strangers over myself? Weird attitude.
No one's stopping you continuing to wear a mask, patting yourself on the back and telling yourself you're making a difference.

madisonbridges · 27/01/2022 18:30

In the north wst. Nearly everyone in M&S foodhall. In Asda generally people under 40, no. Over 40, yes. Course I had to estimate the age.

MichelleScarn · 27/01/2022 18:33

Sorry you've lost me. 'In public too. Real life.' No idea what you're referring to.

Are you berating me for not taking 'umbrage' just because you did? And you have to be celebrated for remonstrating with the men for making their opinions known, but you're angry that they have made their opinions known?..

madisonbridges · 27/01/2022 18:37

@pollygartertidywife

I didn't see this at all. It felt it was more of a split based on age. Younger were less likely to wear one, older more likely to. But I was thinking that a lot of the under 40s would have children in school that were constantly getting it, which in turn would increase their risk of getting it, so they'd probably not see the point in wearing one out and about.

Unless of course it is more to do with your argument and round me people under 40 like and are happy with the PM and people over 40 aren't. Although that seems unlikely.

SamphiretheStickerist · 27/01/2022 18:39

Again, read what I did write

I said and did nothing. I was an observer.

And by 'making their opinions known' in this case you mean, laughing, standing in the doorway, loudly declaring that other people were daft, could piss off, couldn't do or say anything to stop them. Very loud. With childish arguments. Why would anyone choose to do that? Who would choose to be so deliberately nasty knowing some of the people around them were actually scared by it?

BlueFlavour · 27/01/2022 18:41

Pretty much everybody. I’m in Norfolk. I will keep on wearing one.

LadyCatStark · 27/01/2022 18:45

@SamphiretheStickerist

Actually, I'll add to that.

Supermarket on pension day. Everyone wearing masks, many putting them on to walk across the car park. Everybody nodding, smiling, saying hello to complete strangers. All perfectly normal round here.

Group of 4 mid twenties not wearing masks and being loud about them not being compulsory. An older man got to them before I did and said loudly about them needing to open their eyes, look at the fear in those they were standing next to. One of the men looked embarrassed and put his mask on. Two women flounced on into the shop "who do s he think he is" ing. 4th man left.

So not only are we still wearing them we are remonstrating with those who choose to flex their rights, regardless of whom that might affect.

And I don't care who thinks negatively about that. It costs very little to be careful not your neighbour's sensibilities and not to stand so firmly upon your rights.

I think my grandmother would have called it having some basic manners

The older man, and you, had absolutely no right to do that to the twenty somethings. The women are right, who do you think you are?

Again @SamphiretheStickerist I did, you posted

You wrote WE are remonstrating, so you meant 'we but not me'? Anyway this is diverting from the OPs point which is not fair. Apologies @Monsterathai.

MichelleScarn · 27/01/2022 18:48

Re your petition, @RachC2021 That I absolutely will. Absolutely agree if people need or want to wear them they should.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 27/01/2022 18:48

So not only are we still wearing them we are remonstrating with those who choose to flex their rights

To be fair Samphire you didn't do any of the remonstrating yourself. You just stood next to someone who did.

ClariceQuiff · 27/01/2022 18:52

W. Yorks - about 70% in Sainsburys, where they are asking people to.

50% in Tesco.

Both courtesy of DH who is the household shopper. He will not be wearing a mask now it's no longer mandatory, unless it's actually required to use a service.

I've popped a couple of emergency ones in my bag and will put one on in a scenario where I'd be the only unmasked person, but otherwise I won't be wearing them.

Shannith · 27/01/2022 18:57

South east and 95% here. Very unusual for someone not to wear one.

Monsterathai · 27/01/2022 18:59

Wow... I honestly thought that that really self righteous zeal / actively policing other people's behaviour (a la Samphire) had been consigned to 2020... I guess not!! It's definitely an less acceptable attitude though, as demonstrated by the responses on this thread. This pandemic has been a real busy bodies charter Grin

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/01/2022 19:06

SE - Berkshire. I went to a sainsburys today and it was about 50/50 with the customers I think. Fewer staff but I didn’t see many so while it was about 75% not wearing one that was a very small sample.

MichelleScarn · 27/01/2022 19:07

Sadly not @Monsterathai! And haven't actually answered your op. Like others living in Scotland compliance is high still here, anyone not in one will generally have on the sunflower lanyard. And everyone just seems to go about ok, no remonstrating or fire and vengeance or such like, how terribly uneventful! Grin
