People really have had enough haven’t they?

I was in my local newsagent this morning and it was me, two women behind the counter and 7 other shoppers.

5 of us were quite huddled together whilst waiting to pay, so we were very close to the staff members behind the till too, and the other two people were still shopping.

Of the ten of us in the shop, which is quite a small newsagents I was the only one wearing a mask and nobody was even bothered that nobody else was. I mean, the shop assistants aren’t going to make an issue of it seeing as they don’t wear masks either.

I felt like such an idiot as I stood there wearing one.

I’m not threatened by Covid, I would love for things to go back to being mask-free, I only wear one because guidance says to rather than because I want to, but I was just so surprised that nobody else was wearing one too.

I felt so uncomfortable wearing one and I think if my hands weren’t full of food and things I probably would have taken mine off because I just felt silly.

It really has made me think that people have just had enough haven’t they?

I was 1 of 4 people wearing a mask in the playground this morning. I'm often the only one wearing one in the corner shop. Not sure why I'm bothering but it doesn't do me any harm so I still put one on

WheelieBinPrincess · 11/01/2022 12:57

Presumably the playground is outside? I wouldn’t bother to wear one outside.

Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 13:02

People are complacent.l and misinformed

They think along the lines of
'its like Spanish Flu, so will only last 2 or 3 years'
'endemic means mild'
'this is the last variant'
'viruses always mutate to get milder'
'It's just the flu/a cold'

Its wrong, but people only believe what they want to believe. Wishful thinking

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 11/01/2022 13:02

@IndigoC

The virus doesn’t care if you’ve “had enough”.
No virus cares if you've had enough though, does it?

If the playground is outside, it's pointless to wear one, unless you are in a country where mask wearing is mandated outside.....
Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 13:07

The virus doesn’t care if you’ve “had enough"

True, it will carry on regardless, but you will get replies criticising you or nit picking for saying it

DockOTheBay · 11/01/2022 13:10

With 3 shots, a milder variant, better treatments, that fear has dissipated very strongly for the majority.
Absolutely. Everyone I have heard of with covid in the last 2 months (quite a lot of people!) Its been "oh they were absolutely fine" or "really annoying that he had to isolate over new year" or "he had a bit of a cold for a few days". Nobody is getting even moderately ill from my perspective, so what would I be scared of?

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2022 13:11

True, it will carry on regardless, but you will get replies criticising you or nit picking for saying it

But it's an utterly irrelevant thing to say though, isn't it? There's the virus and how we respond to the virus. People's behaviour is key to the latter, like it or not.

But people are responding and behaving as if it's all over.

WheelieBinPrincess · 11/01/2022 13:15

@Flaxmeadow

In your ideal world, how should you like people to behave?

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2022 13:17

But people are responding and behaving as if it's all over.

I don't think anyone thinks it's 'over'. They think the measures taken originally are no longer proportionate or appropriate.

Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 13:18

In your ideal world, how should you like people to behave?

There is no ideal world or can't be an ideal world.

People should follow guidance/the rules on public health but they won't, even when they can

Of course the virus doesn't care if I've had enough, but possibly, just possibly, people know this and simply don't care that the virus doesn't care!

There is no ideal world or can't be an ideal world.

But if they did, that wouldn't be enough to stop Covid would it... So what do you want?
Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 13:20

But we aren't in the measures taken originally. All we are asked to do ATM is wear a mask in shops and get vaccinated (if we can).

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2022 13:21

And some don't think those measures are proportionate or appropriate 🤷‍♀️

NightmareSlashDelightful · 11/01/2022 13:22

It's a pretty established principle that people can only be marshalled into behaving in a self-restrictive way for so long -- I would imagine it was worked into the longer-term modelling around messaging and so on.

ineedsun · 11/01/2022 13:23

@MsTSwift

It’s over isn’t it? This new variant is so mild it seems ridiculous all the mask wearing and social distancing now most people testing positive literally have no or negligible symptoms
I’ve got it and would certainly not describe it like this, nor would 80% of the people I know who have had it.

Fit and healthy, active people who are being wiped off their feet for weeks (and who knows about the longer term effects).

I got mild covid 2 years ago, and was left with scarred lungs along with various other issues. It means that I’ve been hit even harder than I would have been. But even without that, it’s certainly not negligible.

Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 13:23

But if they did, that wouldn't be enough to stop Covid would it... So what do you want

Nothing will stop covid apart from full on measures, eg China/east.

Ive already said, for people to follow guidance/rules on public health but large nunbers of people won't because 'cant be arsed' or 'this is rediculus now' etc

onedayoranother · 11/01/2022 13:24

You are not an idiot. They are. Everyone I see near me (I'm in SW London) is wearing a mask. I was in a busy hairdressers yesterday and they spaced the clients out and all of us were wearing masks. I've just been to B&Q and all were wearing masks. My son works in a mens clothing store and he has to wear a mask all day. My daughter is on the tube to get to school and she says almost everyone is wearing a mask (I imagine some are exempt).
I hate them. I find them claustrophobic and irritating. But I wear them in any enclosed public space and didn't stop when the restrictions eased for a bit. I'm triple jabbed but I still take precautions.
People may be 'fed up' but the virus isn't - I have a friend on her fifth day on a ventilator.

Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 13:25

And some don't think those measures are proportionate or appropriate

Because they are misinformed. Ususally by Facebook or Twitter big gobs, and not science

LondonWolf · 11/01/2022 13:25

On the surface we are completely back to normal apart from a few masks where I am. Some people still wear masks but the social distancing markings and one way systems in the shops are gone, the traffic is as heavy as it was before the pandemic, everyone is back at work. I don’t say it’s like it never happened but if you didn’t know you wouldn’t see anything unusual in day to day life.

AndAnotherNewOne · 11/01/2022 13:28

Don't allow the selfish stupidity of others to rub off on you.

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2022 13:28

Because they are misinformed. Ususally by Facebook or Twitter big gobs, and not science

Oh and we have 'science' like that's one homogenous entity. Of course it isn't.

They probably aren't misinformed when it comes to their own individual risk. Covid was never any significant threat to the young and healthy.

The trouble with all these people is that they did not pace themselves. If every few days during lockdown they had, had gone into the office garden and had a few drinks together they would not be so fatigued of all the rules.
