People who get covid get it more than once

PupInAPram · 08/01/2022 10:38

Just anecdotally, it feels like people who get covid once are much more likely to have it again, other folk just seem bullet proof. I've worked in a higher risk environment throughout, testing twice a week and haven't had it. I know lots of folk working in the same environment who have had it twice. Does anyone know if the stats bear this out?

Most people i know have had it - i only know a handful of people who haven't had it - 90 % of my work have had it

Some have had it twice but ime most have tested too soon on lft (in 90 days) so in theory have likely picked up old infection.

Those who i think have genuinely had it twice have had 9-12 month gap which makes sense as a seasonal illness

Campervan69 · 08/01/2022 10:48

Most people i know have had it once. So far I only know one person who has had it twice. So not sure tbh.

Malariahilaria · 08/01/2022 10:50

Someone I know told me today they're positive for the third time. Horrendous. She is a nurse though so probably exposed more than most. I haven't had it yet, nor any of my family despite the dc being in school.

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2022 10:51

I don’t know anyone who has caught it twice, ans still the majority of the population has never had it.

BluebellsGreenbells · 08/01/2022 10:53

I know two who’ve had it twice.
One 12 months after and the other 6 months after.

AutumnOrange · 08/01/2022 10:57

My best friend has just tested positive for the second time. I have never had it despite working very closely with her and hugging each other regularly.
I test 3 times a week and am part of the ONS study so have also been testing with them every month for 18 months and do the blood test too each month which shows I have antibodies.
We are both fully vaccinated 🤷🏻‍♀️

ethelredonagoodday · 08/01/2022 10:58

Our whole family had avoided it until fairly recently. DD caught it in October. Then in December DH and DS had it, then I tested positive for it start of this week. DD has now tested positive for a second time.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/01/2022 10:58

I’ve had it twice. Once right at the beginning, before March 2020 even, and again just this Christmas gone.

It wasn’t particularly bad for me either time, luckily. In fact recently I only knew I had it because I’d done a test; I had barely any symptoms.

I only know one other person who’s had it more than once though, personally speaking.

I think omicron especially has something of an advantage as regards infecting people who’ve had prior variants. Although in general it doesn’t appear to be making people as ill, on balance.

AnyFucker · 08/01/2022 11:01

I have had it twice. Just recently and in May 2020.

Gechik · 08/01/2022 11:04

DS has most likely had it twice, first time he wasn't tested as it was at the start but his doctor boyfriend was and had it, so seems likely it was covid, then he had it again a couple of weeks ago. I only know very few people who have had it but DS knows loads, probably because a lot of his friends are medics, it's probably just who you mix with

The covid 19 Zoe App says that, based on their research, a healthy diet plays a part in both immunity and in speedy recovery (some examples include unsalted nuts, yoghurt, fermented foods, variety of fruit and veg ie 30 different ones a week).

The study of why some people don't seem to catch certain diseases is an important area. The Times is behind a paywall

But here's a piece from 1996 - different disease, same phenomenon

www.independent.co.uk/news/the-man-who-can-t-catch-aids-1344588.html

With covid, it seems that some people have a different form of T cell response: "Rather than targeting the spike protein, their T-cells were targeting proteins at the centre of the virus. These proteins are much less likely to change from mutation to mutation. In fact, they tend to be found in most coronaviruses, not just Sars-Cov-2"

So it could all be down to your genetic disposition, and what you've encountered (by vaccination or naturally) before.

And the flip side is that some people just won't form a good response - and finding out why that happens will also be important in understanding the immune system

gettingolderandgrumpy · 08/01/2022 11:28

I only know 1 person who’s caught it twice is unvaccinated and more than 12 months between catching so likely to be seasonal.

DontWantTheRivalry · 08/01/2022 11:30

I do think some people are more susceptible to it.

bordermidgebite · 08/01/2022 11:31

People who get covid are more likely to be in situations where they can get covid

Ie a home worker is less likely than a teacher

AlexaShutUp · 08/01/2022 11:32

The people I know who haven't had it are mostly the ones who are being exceptionally careful and still aren't really going anywhere. Except DH, who seems to avoid every virus anyway, even when it's in the house!

I know a few people who thought they were naturally immune because they managed to avoid it despite close contacts/household cases. However, they subsequently caught it at a later date, so it seems a bit random.

I only know of a couple of people who have had it twice.

Deadringer · 08/01/2022 11:32

Only a handful of my very large extended family have had it, and none of them got it a second time. (yet)

PermanentTemporary · 08/01/2022 11:33

My job involves making unwell people cough in my face. I have had symptomatic Covid twice 17 months apart, but actually I think the second time I caught it from teen ds. My age is probably another factor. It's a highly infectious virus but sure, some people will be more able to resist it than others.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/01/2022 11:33

My friend and son both thought they were bullet proof. They've both had it over Christmas and new year. I'm the only person I know who's had it twice, I've got it again now. Caught off the bullet proof son Hmm

Meandyouandyouandme · 08/01/2022 11:39

I tested positive on a pcr on 5th December, have had several negative lft since then and a negative pcr. Felt a bit rough yesterday and now have a positive lft, I’m not sure if this is a new infection or the old one. I feel like I’ve got the beginnings of a cold, so not feeling that bad.

AutumnOrange · 08/01/2022 11:39

I am an overweight middle aged smoker and despite 3 of my children catching it - I still haven’t! It makes my mind boggle

Meandyouandyouandme · 08/01/2022 11:39

I’m fully vaccinated as well 🤷‍♀️

Divebar2021 · 08/01/2022 11:40

The people I know who haven't had it are mostly the ones who are being exceptionally careful and still aren't really going anywhere

This isn’t borne out in my experience. Neither DH or I have had it and we both work in central London and travel on public transport. We have a DD in school who also hasn’t had it to our knowledge. We’ve been to a wedding and other public events recently too. About 50% of my friends and family have had it. Only 1 has had it twice and the 2 infections were only 6 weeks apart.

BillyAndTheSillies · 08/01/2022 11:50

I've had it twice, DH had it once. DS1 once but asymptomatic. DS2 once as a small baby and was nearly hospitalised.

PIL's have travelled all over the world despite the pandemic, were out up and down the high road for hours at a time during lockdown. Nothing. Nada. And they've had enough PCR tests to sink a ship during this time because of travelling.

My parents haven't had it, my mum works in a secondary school and is in a support position so in closer contact - nothing. DB had it unknown to them while on a camping holiday, they shared a tent with him and a house and nothing.
