People who get covid get it more than once

PupInAPram · 08/01/2022 10:38

Just anecdotally, it feels like people who get covid once are much more likely to have it again, other folk just seem bullet proof. I've worked in a higher risk environment throughout, testing twice a week and haven't had it. I know lots of folk working in the same environment who have had it twice. Does anyone know if the stats bear this out?

I had Covid in August. Haven't caught it again yet despite being a close contact and visiting lots of crowded places. Haven't had a booster jab yet either.

Hairyfairy01 · 08/01/2022 11:52

I've noticed this as well. Lots of people in my workplace (NHS) testing positive for the second time now, whereas some people, including myself, haven't had it once, despite regular testing and being exposed to the virus. I do think some people are more prone to it than others.

PupInAPram · 08/01/2022 11:52

@Watapalava that make sense. If you have to test frequently for work you would be in this position. I do wear a mask and have had 3 jabs but I do my own weekly shop and have been in work throughout dealing at close quarters with lots of students.

My son has had it twice ,first time last July ,second time a couple of weeks ago so I m assuming,he's had the Delta varient first and Omicron second time, I tested negative both times but I had symptoms over Xmas so 🤷

OliviaBond · 08/01/2022 11:59

I think this is the case with illness generally though? You're either someone who picks up colds etc frequently or someone who is ill once in a blue moon.

Cherrytart23 · 08/01/2022 11:59

I know a few people who have had it twice sil just tested positive for a 3rd time.

Porcupineintherough · 08/01/2022 12:01

Up to a point maybe. I know I don't make long lasting (or apparently any Hmm) antibodies to natural COVID infection, so expect to have repeat infections throughout my lifetime. Then again we thought ds2 was bulletproof until he contracted omicron just before Christmas, so clearly he isn't.

Onlinedilema · 08/01/2022 12:03

A close relative of mine and their oh have both had it twice. Both vaccinated and both young and fit.

PupInAPram · 08/01/2022 12:05

@OliviaBond, yes, true I guess. Probably the intense focus on covid and the impact at my workplace of isolating staff has made me notice it more.

We haven’t had it here either. We test constantly for work and have worked all the way through the pandemic coming into contact with many different people. My son has been in close contact with many friends who have been positive and still been negative. We are all unvaccinated.

Where as my friend who works from home mostly, has had it twice as have her children and now one child has just been confirmed as positive for the 3rd time. They are vaccinated.

TheKeatingFive · 08/01/2022 12:25

There are certainly people who seem to be bullet proof. My friends au pair has been exposed many times and yet has not ever had it. Despite living with/working with/sharing cars with positive cases.

ILookAtTheFloor · 08/01/2022 12:46

I read an article in the Telegraph about 'never catchers' and wonder if I'm one of them, I've never had it despite exposure, my DH has it right now and I'm still negative.

And I've done nothing to prevent exposure, ditched my mask when the mandate was dropped (begrudgingly wearing again) been to packed shops, gigs, events, theatre shows, the tube, trains, pubs, restaurants, been going to work... So far, negative.

DontWantTheRivalry · 08/01/2022 12:55

I know a few colleagues who’ve had it twice and even some who have had it three times (fully vaccinated) whilst others of us have never had it.

I work in nursing, my husband is a teacher, we have one child in school and the other in daycare but despite all that potential exposure to the virus, none of us have ever had it.

At least not knowingly anyway Grin

Sleepyblueocean · 08/01/2022 13:13

Someone I know has had it 3 times. First time was picked up by NHS antibody testing. The second time over a year later was asymptomatic contact testing. The third time 6 weeks later was symptomatic.

whataballbag · 08/01/2022 18:09

DS has had it twice, once in June and now.

A friend who works at a PCR site has had it 4 times. We joke that he must have had every flavour

I thought I was a never catcher. Then DS2 sneezed in my mouth as I was yawning

My DH has never caught it from me twice & our children once each (they’ve had it at separate times) 🤯 and he was in very close contact with both young children each time. Baffled why he hasn’t had it to be honest. I caught the first infection from our removal men. DH spent far more time close to them than I did! Curiously, we never catch the same colds either. Like the proper awful stinking colds you get from time to time, we are never ill at the same time. If he gets one from the kids, I won’t catch it from either them or him. And vice versa! I’ve always pondered about blood groups. He’s O and I’m A+ .. maybe we different immunity to stuff.

I don’t believe he’s immune to covid but maybe his immune system happens to respond better than mine too it due to genetics or something!

user1471509171 · 08/01/2022 19:38

I've had it twice over a year apart, second time very recently. In that year I have been very closely exposed weekly, often daily but took over a year to catch it again so feel like I was immune for close on 18 months.

nobucketlist · 08/01/2022 19:45

Despite working in high exposure environment throughout whole of pandemic I hadn't caught it and thought I'd avoided it ... until a few days ago Hmm.
I know 2 people who had it 2nd time inrelatively quick succession. One August and one September ... and then both end of December.
My DS has had it twice but 14 months in between.

That's like one of my relatives. Worked on Covid wards during first wave. Didn't catch it - negative antibody test Summer 2020. But had Omicron Covid over Christmas Sad

KurtWilde · 08/01/2022 23:59

The only people I know who've had it are me and my DC, and we've only had it once since the pandemic began.

gogohm · 09/01/2022 00:16

I had it in March 2020 (I think no tests then) but wasn't ill. I haven't tested positive since despite mixing, being in close contact etc. I think I'm pretty immune

SilverGlitterBaubles · 09/01/2022 00:17

Lots of teen DCs friends are now on their 2nd dose of the virus

whattodo2019 · 09/01/2022 00:18

The more social you are the more likely you are to catch it. The only people I know who have had it twice are out socialising a lot!

Sebastianthecoo · 09/01/2022 00:22

I didn’t catch in working on Covid ward during delta. My DC had it in October and despite the fact I didn’t isolate from them and one was extremely symptomatic I didn’t catch it. Fully expect to catch it now we are back to Covid ward with omnicron.
