People who get covid get it more than once

PupInAPram · 08/01/2022 10:38

Just anecdotally, it feels like people who get covid once are much more likely to have it again, other folk just seem bullet proof. I've worked in a higher risk environment throughout, testing twice a week and haven't had it. I know lots of folk working in the same environment who have had it twice. Does anyone know if the stats bear this out?

I suspect a lot of your “haven’t had it” people have actually had it, and were just asymptomatic….
Lacedwithgrace · 09/01/2022 00:25

The only people I know who have had it once or more are the ones who go to the pub, don't wear masks, choose to go into work etc

KurtWilde · 09/01/2022 00:26

@whattodo2019

The more social you are the more likely you are to catch it. The only people I know who have had it twice are out socialising a lot!
We've socialised loads! Aside from school and the DC after school stuff, we've been twice to the theatre, 2,gigs, multiple trips to cinema, large shopping centre every weekend, often take a train, seaside a few times, soft play, Jumparooz, go to cafes and restaurants, and a couple of big family gatherings. And we've still only had it once in going on for 2 years.
Babyvenusplant · 09/01/2022 00:35

I know 2 people who have had it twice, both had it last year just after Christmas and both have it again right now. They don't know each other.

Roadtripconcept · 09/01/2022 00:52

Me ( and a lot of people I worked with ) were ill at the end of 2019 . I had a cough , fever rash around my hips and joints . I had to sleep face down with my head over the edge of the bed because I felt like I was breathing through cotton wool . Other colleagues had similar symptoms but some were much sicker than others . When the news came from Wuhan we all joked that we'd already had it . Lots of other people at work were sick right up until lockdown but were told to carry on working as they hadn't come back from China or been skiing in Italy .

We can't prove that it was covid , perhaps it was another coronavirus ?
I haven't been ill in any way since then .
I have worked throughout in busy distribution centres . I have been careful and worn masks etc but I've been out and about in shops cafes , the gym, public transport and no hint of any illness.
I've been doing regular LFTs for over a year , done a few close contact PCRs and had 3 antibody tests for ZOE and the Covidence study. The first was over a year after my possible early covid . The second was just before my first vaccine . The third was after my second vaccine . I didn't test positive for antibodies until I'd had both jabs .
So ... either I had it very early , or I haven't had it at all 😊.

I’ve never had it. Don’t know anyone who has had it. I was in a zoom meeting once with someone who said she’d tested positive.

PermanentTemporary · 09/01/2022 01:03

Wow Immediately that stuns me. Seems to me that everyone i know has had it at least once. Ah - maybe I'm older than you.

gertrudemortimer · 09/01/2022 01:40

I know so many people who are on their second positive, with both vaccines and a booster but I work in the nhs and at a test site so there's a lot of exposure. I've just tested positive for the first time and so has my son I'm glad to have it out of the way I was feeling a bit left out never catching it. I only had my booster 5 weeks ago so I was a bit surprised but hey ho! It's never ending I'm not sure how much more can be done to control it.

ImmediatelyNo · 09/01/2022 02:32

@PermanentTemporary I’m 46

PupInAPram · 09/01/2022 03:50

@Changechangychange not in my case. ONS tested us for antibodies each term and I had to LFT twice weekly throughout. All negative.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/01/2022 05:03

I know quite a few people testing positive now for the first time

StarCat2020 · 09/01/2022 07:30

@PermanentTemporary
My job involves making unwell people cough in my face
What job is that?

(Tell me to mind my own if too nosey)

TenoringBehind · 09/01/2022 07:49

Most people I know haven’t had it at all, but the ones who have had it have had it twice. One friend (a doctor) has had it three times!

Lovelydovey · 09/01/2022 07:56

Most people I know have now had it, at least once, or it has at least been within their household.

We’d been very careful but succumbed over Christmas - though I didn’t catch it despite not isolating from positive DH or DC.

INeedNewShoes · 09/01/2022 08:10

Neither DD nor I have had it, DD despite being in very close contact with it. None of my close friends who we spend time locally with have had it, despite most of them working in schools where there have been outbreaks. Levels have been extremely high locally at more than one point in the pandemic.

The only thing I can possibly think of that connects us all and could possibly be a protective factor is that we eat a lot of vegetables!

WarriorN · 09/01/2022 09:41

It's weird; I usually catch everything going but despite working across several classes in an SEND school, and also working face to face closely with known infectious pupils, or with staff, ive so far avoided it. My Dh and I also didn't catch it at a (mini super spreader event) gathering in nov when everyone else did.

Someone at work has caught it 3 times, a few twice.

Ive been triple jabbed as have those at work who've recently caught it

of course I've jinxed that now!

I do eat the diet mentioned in the Zoe study and take vitamin D plus b vits and cod liver oil.

WarriorN · 09/01/2022 09:43

Because of asthma that's v susceptible to coughs and many close contact events; I've had loads of pcrs too. All negative.

PupInAPram · 09/01/2022 10:40

Hasn't there been evidence that asthmatics are slightly less likely to get it or be severely affected by it than others? I'm asthmatic and I remember reading this with great interest!

I read this recently . www.qmul.ac.uk/media/news/2021/smd/allergic-conditions-linked-to-lower-covid-19-infection-risk.html# Not sure how to post the link so not sure if it's right 😊.
KurtWilde · 09/01/2022 11:09

@PupInAPram my DS has chronic asthma and has needed a nebuliser when viruses have given him a nasty flare up in the past. With covid he had a heavy cold and a bit of a cough, that was the extent of it.

Roadtripconcept · 09/01/2022 11:15

I forgot to say , this is from the Covidence study which I'm part of .

WorryMcGee · 09/01/2022 11:21

I had it in March 2020 one week before lockdown (confirmed later in an antibody test as part of a research study - couldn’t get a test at the time) I’ve not had it since despite being in contact with people who have, and living my life normally when restrictions were lifted (not being goady just pointing out I’ve not been trying to avoid it or anything). Same with my husband, who also had it in March 2020 and been fine since despite being in and out of hospitals for something else totally unrelated from August 20 - January 21 and back at work in person since September.

caringcarer · 09/01/2022 14:12

My dniece had it twice once Delta as she was 15 but before they could have vaccine. Then she was told she could not have vaccine for 3 months after positive PCR test. 8 weeks after having Delta she got Omecron. Now she will have to wait another 12 weeks and hoping no new variants appear in meanwhile. She has GCSE in summer so missing a lot of school not good.

INeedNewShoes · 11/01/2022 09:46

Thanks for the study link @Roadtripconcept . That’s very interesting.

I have asthma, food allergies, hay fever and atopic eczema. Never thought I’d see a day I’d be glad about it! I’ve just found out that someone I spent yesterday evening with has tested positive this morning so I’m hoping more than ever that I’m not susceptible!

nipersvest · 11/01/2022 09:50

DD has had it twice, she caught original covid Oct 20 in her first week at Uni, has been vaccinated twice, had the booster but also caught omicron over xmas. She was isolating at home with the rest of us avoiding her and taking LFT's if we needed to go out, although we cancelled anything non essential till she was out of isolation. No-one else in the house caught it from her.
