The eight temporary "Nightingale" units will each house about 100 patients, with building starting this week

Royal Preston hospital in Lancashire
St James' University Hospital in Leeds
Lister Hospital in Stevenage
St George's Hospital in Tooting
William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent
North Bristol Hospital
Solihull Hospital
University Hospitals Birmingham
University Hospitals Leicester

temporary structures will be set up in the grounds of hospitals so staff, equipment and emergency departments are close at hand.

Only those patients who are close to being discharged and need minimal support will be cared for at these facilities.

not much detail ,I wonder how much help they'll be by (presumably) providing a hot zone for recovering Covid patients.

But surely this will be extra pressure for NHS staff figuring out resources to accommodate them ,even if they're just erected and not used .And there will be no extra staff to provide care in them ..so increasing bed space by a 100 but no staff ,nurses ,cleaners ,caterers .

My local hospital in London has had to close wards because they can't staff them .

These car park facilities will therefore effectively act as hotels for these patients. I would bring in people like hotel staff, nursery nurses, social workers, teachers etc to look after them

Erm no thank you! Also who will be looking after the children?

@Pinktree7 Oh you're being serious. I thought you were taking the piss. Why not start a rota for all these helpers and put yourself down to volunteer every weekend. Very public spirited of you.

ChequerBoard · 01/01/2022 16:48

Ok @PinkTree7 I've put you down on the rota for toilet cleaning duties. Plymouth today, Birmingham tomorrow and Liverpool on Monday.

No problem yeah?

(This is about as sensible as the rest of your 'ideas')

peridito · 01/01/2022 16:53

Why not get teachers in for a few hours after school for example to heat up meals for these car park facilities?

Excellent idea. They're all done and dusted with work at 3.15 /4pm leaving them wondering how to fill their evenings .With their long holidays and working in covid free environments where everyone wears masks they'll be ideal .They'll love the chance to get some fresh air in those car parks and get some exercise after their sedentary day.

Plus they're used to being flexible ;delivering lessons in the classroom while also doing the same on line ,adapting at the last minute to changing exam systems . So they'll positively revel in adjusting childcare for their family ,working out how to travel to the hospital using public transport ( no car parking available ) and then back to collect their car from their normal place of work .

I predict the NHS will be overrun with volunteers .

Maybe best just not to reply to such ridiculous posters.....

Sowhatifiam · 01/01/2022 17:16

could other public sector workers be doing more? Why not get teachers in for a few hours after school for example to heat up meals for these car park facilities?

You don’t think teachers are doing enough?

It's just amazing someone would even think of it
GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 01/01/2022 17:18

Think some posters are just on the wind up as no one can seriously be that ridiculous.

XenoBitch · 01/01/2022 17:19

@PinkTree7

What’s being missed is that a lot of the people in hospital beds don’t need to be there. They’re not medically ill, it’s just an issue with finding somewhere to go.

These car park facilities will therefore effectively act as hotels for these patients. I would bring in people like hotel staff, nursery nurses, social workers, teachers etc to look after them.

All the people you mentioned have their own jobs to go to. Why on earth should they have to volunteer their free time? What is your job? Will you happily do a full shift of it, then spend another 4-6 hours in a nightingale hospital?
Wreath21 · 01/01/2022 17:19

@PinkTree7

Personally I’d like to see more flexibility with staffing. NHS staff should be able to be temporarily transferred across the country to where they’re needed. It makes no sense having nurses sitting idle in Plymouth when they’re needed in Birmingham.

Equally, could other public sector workers be doing more? Why not get teachers in for a few hours after school for example to heat up meals for these car park facilities?

You do understand, don't you, that NHS staff are human beings with lives and, quite often, families?

While I'm aware that there are various jobs and industries where ability and willingness to relocate temporarily at short notice is part of the deal, telling HCPs that now they can expect to be shunted all round the country at short notice, never mind their childcare arrangements, housing costs etc will mean even more leaving the profession for good.

Tealightsandd · 01/01/2022 17:26

Perhaps some retired MPs could volunteer?

CorvusPurpureus · 01/01/2022 17:39

To be fair, I'm a teacher & I can operate a microwave, so I could definitely be one of Pink's volunteers.

But I mastered my Ping Cuisine skill set quite separately from my PGCE, & indeed a good decade previously, so I don't see quite why her thoughts are naturally tending towards the teaching profession...

Surprised that poster hasn't already suggested that benefit claimants should be drafted in to these sheds, TBH.

As I say, teachers and other public sector workers covid be rota’d to staff these units after school and at weekends.

I could see them doing things like heating up meals and even basic cleaning and care tasks like preparing beds for new patients.[/quote]
Why only public sector workers?

Very funny, a career in satire awaits you.

What’s being missed is that a lot of the people in hospital beds don’t need to be there.

What's actually being missed is that a lot of the people who are unable to go home independently still need quite a lot of care.

But do come and join us.

We can sleep in the schools. All the idle teachers can make up cots in the hall for all the idle nurses to sleep in. Ping! I think I hear the sound of dinner...

Wingedharpy · 01/01/2022 22:20

Pink, you're confusing people with complex care needs for "the homeless".
There's a difference.

I'm withdrawing my offer of the garage as it's a 3 day camel ride from the nearest toilet, so clearly, not suitable if a bucket will not suffice.

MoreAloneTime · 02/01/2022 08:22

Some really barking comments 😂

Thepowerofthelook · 04/01/2022 17:49

Copied from BBC news website 'One of the hubs will be at the St James's University Hospital in Leeds. But the British Medical Association (BMA) is warning staffing the Leeds hub will mean "falling further behind" on routine work.'

As I and others predicted further up thread staff will need to be taken from other areas (predicting 3 staff per bed per 24 hours to staff these hubs) halting /reducing other services.
I'm due an operation at one of these nightingale hub hospitals later this month after already waiting two and half years. I don't think that will be going ahead especially when we also have staff shortages. The NHS was on its knees pre covid in winter times but these delays for none covid patients are beyond devastating for many. Its not just waiting for the surgery all I've had since March 2020 is 2 telephone appointments with promises of scans and surgery soon (which never happens).
PALS staff were lovely but the reply I got was basically 'because of covid'.
Lots of people in this position. How long to clear the back log/will they ever?
