No masks ffs

Took my two dc to the evening showing of Spider-Man last night and the cinema was pretty much full with hardly anyone wearing a mask. I was really shocked. I thought this was a rule now in indoor spaces and after I made the booking I received an email from the cinema chain saying that everyone was expected to wear make inside unless exempt. It was really hot in there and no distancing (previously I think cinemas made some seats unavailable to create bigger spaces between people). I just felt really uncomfortable.

Obviously I realise I could have got up and left but didn't want to disappoint two excited kids. Plus they've both had it recently so it was only really me at risk.

Has anyone else experienced this in cinemas? With rates so high and it being close to Christmas I just would have thought people might be more careful.
@Whammyyammy but what about my chicken pizza??? Or my bubble waffle. It cost £7, I'm not SCOFFING it
15 minutes should be enough for you to selfishly eat your snacks that you paid for......then mask back on please

LumosSolem · 24/12/2021 12:36

15 mins is far too generous, 30 seconds is enough, surely?

Nonnymum · 24/12/2021 12:40

It is now a legal requirement for people to wear masks in cinemas and theatres. I am not surprised you were annoyed OP.

The management should have told people when taking their payment

IcedPurple · 24/12/2021 12:47

@Silverswirl

The how long should you be allowed to eat pop corn for in the cinema posts are the 2021 version of ‘put cheese in your tea’ posts of 2020 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Or "Is it OK if I buy an eye liner while waiting to pick up my prescription from Boots?"

That was an actual post.

Unless eating or drinking, as discussed in this thread....
FourTeaFallOut · 24/12/2021 12:51

Meh. I can't even summon the energy to care. Be a realist, people aren't wearing masks anywhere they can get away with it so if that doesn't meet your bar for risk then I'd cut out non essential events.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 24/12/2021 12:57

We were due to go today at half 3 but we have had to cancel as I have a op planned for new years eve and I have to socially distance and I didn't think it would be possible at the pictures. I wouldn't expect anyone to sit in a mask there anyway and I wouldnt.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 24/12/2021 12:58

@MrsLargeEmbodied

did they have lots of ventilation?
In a cinema?!
Nonnymum · 24/12/2021 13:01

Whammyyammy
That's not what the guidance says
Cinemas and theatres are on the list of venues where you must wear masks and it goes on go say they must be worn all the time while you are in the venue. Only exception is for children and those who are medically exempt.
There is no requirement to wear masks in hospitality venues but cinemas are not classed as hospitality

MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2021 13:03

If cinemas felt strongly about enforcing that they wouldn’t sell food and drink to eat inside screening

Since they do people can eat etc

Flapjacker48 · 24/12/2021 13:11

But when will there be a Venom/Spiderman cross over with Hardy and Holland, not that Hardy's venom is back in his universe?

Nonnymum · 24/12/2021 13:20

There are also scenarios when you are permitted to remove a face covering:

if asked to do so for identification in premises such as a bank, building society or post office

if asked to do so by shop staff or relevant employees for identification, for assessing health recommendations (for example by a pharmacist) or for age identification purposes, including when buying age restricted products such as alcohol

in order to take medication

when it is reasonably necessary to sing, for example – as part of a choir, service, rehearsal or performance

You are allowed to remove them to eat and drink. Or are they no longer serving refreshments. Ffs

In fact here is the email I received about 2 hours ago from Vue for the viewing we are no longer going to later on.

Hi,
The safety of our teams and guests is of the utmost importance to us.

In line with local government guidance, face masks are mandatory unless eating or drinking. This applies to all customers aged 11 and above, unless exempt. Our teams will also be wearing face masks.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping to keep each other and our teams safe

Not according to our local cinema.
MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2021 13:37

Just checked ours

Face coverings must be worn by all customers and employees, as per government guidelines, except while eating or drinking or if you are exempt from having to wear a face covering.

Silverswirl · 24/12/2021 13:41

@IcedPurple I missed that one 🤣
I do remember someone saying that how dare another poster go out for bread and milk as they weren’t essentials! Someone else asked how can they make a cup of tea and the first poster said either have it black or put cheese instead of milk!! 🤣

paranoidnamechanger · 24/12/2021 13:50

It happened last week at a screening of C’mon C’mon. Nobody including myself and my friend wore one, personally I don’t see the point. The ushers didn’t do anything.

SugarHouse1 · 24/12/2021 13:52

@GiveMeNovocain

What difference would masks make if you're all sharing the same air for hours? They're not magic virus filters.
That’s EXACTLY what they are! This is why countries with mask mandates have very little Covid.
mnp321 · 24/12/2021 13:56

We went to watch a show at the Southbank earlier this week. Venue was around 40% full. Technically masks were mandatory when not eating. At the start, probably 70% were wearing masks but, but the interval, around 50% were wearing masks.

I'm guessing as you feel less social pressure to wear a mask if others around you aren't. (Yes, I know some are exempt but I doubt that was the case for the majority). I don't blame people if they don't want to wear a mask given it was an optional activity rather than travelling on the tube for example (where we wore proper masks).

mnp321 · 24/12/2021 13:57

After the interval, not but

cherryonthecakes · 24/12/2021 14:03

I watched it on Wednesday and the norm seemed to be masks when queuing for snacks and waking around but you can take them off when you sit down and watch the film. There seemed to be a seat between each group which isn't quite 1m but better than nothing

Peaseblossum22 · 24/12/2021 14:03

This is a interesting , we had our first real family argument about covid rules last night ( not bad in 20 months ) when youngest ds (20) suggested a family outing to see Spider-Man today or Boxing Day . With all three boys home it would have been the sort of thing we would have done pre Covid. My heart really wanted to say yes but my head was just saying ‘too risky ‘ certainly not today as have older relatives coming on Xmas Day but Boxing Day ?? Ds clearly felt we were being over zealous but we live rurally and would need to go into town which has higher cases .

I am so tired of making value judgements the whole time I would love to just throw caution to the wind but would also like to see my father later this week and need to stay safe but how long can I ask young adults to stay in indeed can I ask them at all . I have not really stopped them up to now, they have been careful voluntarily but it’s definitely fraying at the edges now we are all so tired.

It's a huge bubble waffle and costs SEVEN POUNDS!!!!!!
DynamiteFilledRadish · 24/12/2021 14:28

I've never had a bubble waffle. Are they good? How long would it take me to eat it? Do note I am a greedy burden on the nhs bastard.
