No masks ffs

Took my two dc to the evening showing of Spider-Man last night and the cinema was pretty much full with hardly anyone wearing a mask. I was really shocked. I thought this was a rule now in indoor spaces and after I made the booking I received an email from the cinema chain saying that everyone was expected to wear make inside unless exempt. It was really hot in there and no distancing (previously I think cinemas made some seats unavailable to create bigger spaces between people). I just felt really uncomfortable.

Obviously I realise I could have got up and left but didn't want to disappoint two excited kids. Plus they've both had it recently so it was only really me at risk.

Has anyone else experienced this in cinemas? With rates so high and it being close to Christmas I just would have thought people might be more careful.

You can't wear a mask in the cinema.
You'll be drinking your wine and eating a pic n mix
🍷🍷🍷🍷😆

JohnSmithDrive · 24/12/2021 10:40

People will have justified it to themselves because they were eating and really what differnece would it make if they were intermittently removing it to eat and drink compared to not wearing one at all.?

Cinema is probably something to avoid if you're worried about contacts. TBH I'm surprised it was busy, all social things seem very quiet here as people are choosing to stay away.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:40

@PinkWaferBiscuit yes under 12s and some others are exempt. But most adults do not drink and eat all through a film.
Anyway this thread is full of anti-maskers who refuse to accept scientific evidence.
I just hope all those people in the cinema are not spending Christmas with anyone vulnerable.

bizboz · 24/12/2021 10:42

It was like this when masks were mandatory in cinemas before which is why I have avoided them. One of my DC was in a show last week. It was only a small theatre but at least half the audience weren't wearing masks. Masks aren't foolproof but there is plenty of evidence that they reduce transmission so it seems crazy to me that people won't wear them in a high-rise environment.

Once again, the legislation does not state that nom-exempt people in cinemas eating and drinking on and off are required to mask if there's nothing in their mouths. If you disagree, show us the relevant law.

3WildOnes · 24/12/2021 10:42

I wouldn’t wear a mask in a cinema, I like to snack and drink throughout the film to it just wouldn’t be practical. I would to walk around.
We cancelled our cinema trip this week as felt too risky so close to Christmas. I’ve only been meeting friends at restaurants and bars that have outdoor heaters.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 24/12/2021 10:42

Most adults I know do. Hmm I suppose that makes me an anti masker who understands how to self regulate food during a 2 hour film, good to know. Grin

🙄 at this.

If people are so concerned it’s easy to avoid the cinema

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:43

I went to one of the first theatre openings when they were trialling them. Everyone was wearing a mask. It felt pretty safe and I had a great night. Sad things have changed.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:44

@PinkWaferBiscuit I cant imagine how much junk you consume if you eat and drink for a whole two hours.

Same. I didn't realise yesterday when I wore a mask in the supermarket that I was in fact an anti masker. Good to know.

A medium popcorn if you must know, not that's its at all relevant and you're clearly just looking to make a spiteful dig. Believe it or not you don't have to force it all down your throat in the first 15 minutes, it's not going to go cold. You can instead eat it slowly throughout the course if the film. Hmm

Nobody cares about your ability to visualise food.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:50

@PinkWaferBiscuit that is a lot of junk food. There are 700-899 calories in that. So it is a lot for one person.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 10:50

800

Cool thanks for the heads up that I'm consuming what you consider a huge amount of junk food. Thank goodness I'm a grown adult who can make my own choices and who doesn't need permission off someone online to enjoy a treat when I take a trip to the cinema. Hmm

Honestly not at all sure why you're even commenting on what is being consumed the whole point I and others were making is that if you're eating you don't need a mask.

It's hilarious that you've resorted to offering unasked for dietary advice now you've clearly realised you were wrong about the law. I see you.

LumosSolem · 24/12/2021 10:57

@PinkWaferBiscuit you disgusting greedy pig you, don't you realise how much pressure you are putting on the NHS with your horrendous medium popcorn 😂😂😂😂

Lol we really shouldn't 'feed' this any more 😂 I really do pity them if that's actually a genuine attitude

Wizzbangfizz · 24/12/2021 10:58

Astonishing that
People feel it is their right to
Comment on what people eat at the cinema! Christ almighty.

Silverswirl · 24/12/2021 10:58

@RoyalFamilyFan

It is not true that fabric or paper masks do little. There is research on this, they do offer some protection. Why are people anxious because they are willing to take some level of risk but want that risk reduced if it can be? I am doing lots, going out to restaurants and pubs. But I wouldn't sit in a crowded cinema full of unmasked people.
Not agains omicron. There has been Jew thoughts on them recently
MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2021 11:01

Just use common sense and think about what cinemas are like. People eating etc who won’t have a mask on.

If that feels too risky, don’t go.

humdingle · 24/12/2021 11:12

Unclench.

Go to the cinema if you want to, stay at home if you're worried. Let everyone else get on with actually living.

How totally mumsnet.

Figgygal · 24/12/2021 11:27

We were going to go today but decided not to risk it as seeing family tomorrow

PinkWaferBiscuit · 24/12/2021 11:27

I'd rather be a greedy pig than someone who commented on the food intack of a stranger online. Grin I'll b ensure to clap for the poor NHS staff that will have to deal with my truly dispicable behaviour. Grin In the mean time I shall continue to frequent cinemas and purchase food as they like many other businesses could really do with the support.
