Is anyone else thinking there now won't be a lockdown or firm restrictions, just the rule of 6 (England)

I feel like the drive for the tighter restrictions has really lost momentum the past few days. I know the numbers are high but they aren't translating to the hospital admissions/deaths (or I guess, yet). Still a mighty blow to the hospitality industry I know but it seems things aren't looking as bad as we thought??

Fairylights25
Infection rates have peaked and we might just squeak by without many more restrictions.

To be fair, I don’t think that is true.

I think Boris may specify mix of up to three households. Still who knows.

Alarmset · 22/12/2021 18:32

We had an email from the LA on the last day of term saying they won't know anything before we see it on the news, so don't bother asking Grin

I work in hospitality and was very happy to see a nearly full restaurant today. Yes, I know it isn't as covid safe as an empty restaurant, but it's my job. I'd like to keep it!

So I do think some people are less keen on locking down. These were all middle class/wealthy diners in a nice restaurant, so you'd think reasonably educated and perfectly able to stay away if they wanted to.

I think it's a bit to soon to call it ,deaths are still relatively low but cases only started going really high a week or so ago ,fingers crossed for schools remaining open .

toomuchlaundry · 22/12/2021 18:36

How have infection rates peaked, we reached 100k today?

TwittleBee · 22/12/2021 18:37

Yesterday I had the hospital inform us they've had to remove their Open Access service due to covid pressures and today our GP has informed us it cannot open due to sheer number of staff positive for covid... It does feel like the NHS is struggle here (Essex)

Schools haven't been told anything other than ensure they have measures in place for any changes. That could be bubbles, reactions to internal spikes of cases, being prepared for regional or national outbreaks and have measures in place, so nothing can be really read into this, other than wanting to ensure schools will have minimal disruption to learning if any changes have to take place.

Let's all prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Ah, the rule of six.

Happy memories of the phase of it being illegal for two families to meet for a walk/ play in the park, yet be legal to get pissed with 5 other households in the pub.

I love how family-friendly the government is, and how it puts our youngest generation first.

I always thought a full lockdown was unlikely, and recent news seems to support that.

As an aside, I've noticed that certain posters who were very prolific a few days ago, as they usually are when bad news is anticipated, have become notable by their relative absence. I take that as a good sign!

I'm glad so many others are feeling hopeful!

On the downside I now need an excuse to avoid meeting someone on the 2nd 😂 I thought I could blame Boris. Trust him to fuck that up 🤣

I don't think there will be a full on lockdown. After their shenanigans the government won't get people to fully comply with one. I think restrictions on numbers mixing, large scale events will be curtailed, still working from home, have to have a meal to be able to be in a pub etc etc.

coochyboochy · 22/12/2021 19:15

Hopefully no closures so people can choose to ignore the guidance/rules if they wish.

You can still use the "close contact with positive case" reason. It's a handy one for getting out of unwelcome gatherings, especially as you can "test negative" the next day.

We are going to a wedding on NYE, the bride must be frantic with worry.

thewhatsit · 22/12/2021 19:23

@blueshiningsea

Rule of six would also be awful for us as we are a family of six so we couldn’t see anyone last time!
It was definitely changed to six or two households in the last round of lockdowns in early 2021. I can’t see it going back to actually 6 people, which made no sense and no one followed anyway. It was always nonsensical that two families could only legally meet up by leaving a child at home etc.

I don’t think they’ll try “substantial meal” again. That was ridiculed a lot and challenged in court. I can’t remember the outcome but I believe the government had to disclose that they rule was based on nothing whatsoever so even if they ultimately had the right to do it, they were discredited. Do you remember all those pubs who would serve up huge bowls of plain pasta to every table? It was all just so silly.

I don’t want or support another lockdown but if it has to happen I think we need rules that actually make sense and work this time. It can’t be rules for the sake of having more rules…

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 22/12/2021 20:40

Social distancing. Rule of 6 and maybe curfew or pre booking . But I can't see a lockdown coming
