Is anyone else thinking there now won't be a lockdown or firm restrictions, just the rule of 6 (England)

I feel like the drive for the tighter restrictions has really lost momentum the past few days. I know the numbers are high but they aren't translating to the hospital admissions/deaths (or I guess, yet). Still a mighty blow to the hospitality industry I know but it seems things aren't looking as bad as we thought??

Maybe I am being hopelessly optimistic...

Well considering my sons nursery just emailed us asking us to update our key worker status as department of education has asked them to get their contingency plan in place for jan, I think you’re being optimistic

TheCloudsHavePassed · 22/12/2021 17:57

Oh feck.

But I also work in a secondary and my head hasn’t said anything…!

How2Help · 22/12/2021 17:58

OP, I agree.

May be utterly delusional and overly optimistic but I have said to someone today that it feels like England may be rule of 6 and not much else.

TheCloudsHavePassed · 22/12/2021 18:00

I do think Boris is holding on, for dear life, with his decisions and I do think he would announce at a moment's notice for restrictions to come in tomorrow if need be. Just seems at the moment, things are OK...I don't know.

But he's still a knob 😂

Yes I’m hoping it’s rule of 6/bubbles rather than full lockdown. Full lockdown seems too extreme but I do think large parties in enclosed spaces at new year is foolish to permit. I know some will go ahead and break any rules anyway.

Hospitality is quieter in January anyway so it seems a shame to condemn it through closures

I also think they should be sending out a box of lateral flow tests to each over 18, given how crucial it is people are taking them before socialising.

Alarmset · 22/12/2021 18:01

The DfE asked schools to review their plans early December. It doesn't mean anyone knows anything.

TheCloudsHavePassed · 22/12/2021 18:01

And by OK I mean people aren't dying like we've seen previously. Clearly the situation of thousands being ill is superbly shit. I work in the utilities sector and staffing is a huge worry.

Rule of six is the worst possible option for me. It's very distressing to realise you're not in anyone's top six!

TheCloudsHavePassed · 22/12/2021 18:03

I agree about Nye parties although I have two under 4yo and had zero plans, so that's easy for me to say

We had an email from school today saying closure was "unlikely", no one knows anything at this point so I wouldn't take that as anything other than contingency planning.

Feeling more heartened by the news that Wales and Scotland are limiting large events and imposing rule of six in pubs/restaurants from Christmas, but not limiting mixing at home yet. We (England) usually follow them or go softer.
Getting a bit excited now, family gathering on 27th and 28th December, around 12 from 4 households 👍

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/12/2021 18:13

It does seem “lockdown light”. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2021 18:15

I feel like pressure is off but then again I’m only talking about England

In other places stronger and in other direction

Hoping for NYE birthday party

User135644 · 22/12/2021 18:15

They haven't go the public on their side for restrictions anymore (as a majority). They don't like going against opinion polls.

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2021 18:16

I wouldn’t go by what schools / nurseries are emailing btw

Whatever happens will be based on very current data and new decisions due to that

blueshiningsea · 22/12/2021 18:16

Rule of six would also be awful for us as we are a family of six so we couldn’t see anyone last time!

I am sorry, and yes I think any restrictions have downsides. I suppose by optimistic I mean it could be worse eg full lockdown so people on their own see nobody, hospitality has no business etc. That doesn’t mean rule of 6 is a great thing. What I would say is (if I understand it) rule of 6 wouldn’t mean only 6 people ever (like a bubble). So if I have two groups of friends of 6 people each, I could meet set A one day and set B another day. So that may be 11 in total. And in case it helps - when it was more limited bubbles the people I “chose” weren’t who I would have wanted - in some cases it was necessity/family politics. But I acknowledge that regardless it will be more isolating for some than others, for which I am sorry.

And rule of 6 is speculation anyway based on absolutely nothing except guesswork.

Ideally no restrictions will be needed and I hope you can meet with who you choose Flowers

Scottishgirl85 · 22/12/2021 18:18

There will not be a lockdown and schools will not be told to close, that much I think is pretty much guaranteed. Restrictions yes, but full lockdown - never again in our generation

Was it rule of 6 or two households or am I completely mis-remembering?!

Clarkey86 · 22/12/2021 18:20

Schools have received no new information other than “Be ready for remote learning” which has scared everyone but has been in place pretty much since the start!

I think the email from nursery is just them panicking rather than any insight into the government’s decisions.

Remember last time when schools found out literally the day before at the same time as everyone else!

Fairylights25 · 22/12/2021 18:21

I agree op. We had an email from our school to confirm they definitely plan to open in January! So I am with you. Infection rates have peaked and we might just squeak by without many more restrictions.

Worst case rule of six and table service in pubs. Not sure about nightclubs and large scale events, but I am not seeing a lockdown at all now.

Fairylights25 · 22/12/2021 18:22

DC go to a boarding school so families have to book flights and make plans. I felt reassured by the message.

Fairylights25 · 22/12/2021 18:23

I am thinking the boosters are making a big big difference, and people naturally taking it easy.
