Shall we delay Christmas until Jan 6?

As it stands December 25 will be in the middle of a massive but really fast covid wave caused by omicron which is likely to overwhelm our hospitals, at least temporarily. If you infect your nan then they will have a huge amount of problem getting care . Shall we all just agree to spend Christmas with our immediate family and then have an extended family Christmas on January 6 instead?

No things will be worse in January- or any future date suggested!…did everyone remember don’t do Christmas you can do a family Easter from last year…didn’t work out so we’ll did it!

All my children are adult. They are off work at Christmas.

One already can’t come home but if I wait til 6 jan then another will also be away again.

You crack on if you want but we'll probably be in lockdown by then and accessing healthcare will be more difficult.

By all do you mean your family or everyone? If the latter, no thanks jan will be worse and we'll prob be ina lockdown that's not called lockdown.

We moved our 'Christmas Day' forward two weeks, as my mum is due to start chemo on 22nd Dec and I can't risk passing Covid onto her. Instead, we are spending Christmas, not with immediate family, but with lovely friends and their kids, who are, like at, at low risk of becoming very unwell even if Covid creeps in uninvited. It's going to be a greedy, boozy day and I can't wait.

I can't imagine, if the predictions are even close to right, the situation will be anything less than dire by 6th January, and so if you are inclined to change or cancel arrangements, I'd be moving them forward to this weekend.

On the other hand, I do rather love the idea of an old fashioned Twelfth Night celebration as well as Christmas Day celebrations, so would be happy to join in the 6th Jan revelry.

What if we only have immediate family who we spend Christmas with anyway and no extended family, can we just carry on as normal?

I am. My adult DD is working Christmas morning and Boxing Day morning and the weekend of the 7th is the 1st one after Christmas that we are able to be together. She lives a 6 hour round trip away so being together for a few hours is not an option. When the rest of the world is taking their Christmas decorations down, mine will be going up.

Forgot to add, even if she was able to be here on Christmas day, it's 18 months too late for her to worry about infecting her nan.

We just have adult DS who is off work at Christmas like everyone else, if any of us get covid we will probably just meet in a month or two between any lockdowns, it will be a bit of a pita but stuff happens. No elderly relatives left to save

Oh yeah, all the sanctimonious 'why are people putting so much emphasis on seeing each other at Christmas, it's just one day, just wait and have a big family Christmas later' last December. Then it was May until it was next legal to sit in your mum's living room, and June before you could sit in your mum's living room with your kids and your sister could sit there with her kids at the same time...

My grandfather is alive, he's 79, my mum is 52 and I'm 31.

There are rumours of a stricter lockdown in January and Scotland is already "advising" only 3 households mix apart from on Christmas Eve, Christmas day and Boxing day. So I would not be delaying any gathering just in case.

My mother is 75, she wants to spend Christmas with her grandkids. She's adament, after missing last year.
She's more likely to infect us though, given her active social life. She does love a good pub and club.

A lot of people have elderly relatives who they see at Christmas. In my case it is my parents/FIL who are elderly and still alive although my nan only died recently.

I understand the wish to just get on with things. My personal view, having looked at the data carefully, is that December 25 -31 is going to be pretty much the worse possible period for the NHS. But we will see.
