If you’re trying to decide whether to go to a Christmas party

Victoria Derbyshire on Twitter has shared that her triple vaccinated brother contracted omicron at a Christmas meal out. Out of 21 one of them 17 have now tested positive.

Imagine thousands of similar mini super-spreading events up and down the country this week and where that could lead.

Other countries have feared for their health provision being overwhelmed during peaks.

I'm not disagreeing about the need for improvement to NHS. But it's not because it's shit that it might struggle - not when there are pandemic peaks

CherryBlossomAutumn · 13/12/2021 17:38

You are right OP

This really is going to be a car crash of a Christmas. I’ve decided not to go to the big family do as they are all seeing loads of people beforehand and it just doesn’t seem worth it. It’s always good to try to avoid this virus and not be sloppy. Because… long term possible effects, because I might infect someone else, because the health services are almost at capacity already and leaving the service with PTSD.

Will just stay at home. I’m going to see just a few close family members for an outside lunch instead a week later. I’m also seeing a more vulnerable member but I will do LFTs and isolate for 1 week before hand with my kids (well, stay at home).

It’s gutting

thatsallineed · 13/12/2021 17:39

I was going to one this evening. The organiser has just cancelled it not half an hour ago.

ElectraBlue · 13/12/2021 17:41

What is the difference with going to a pub, restaurant, gym, packed shopping centre or tube train?

Are we saying Covid only strikes at Christmas parties...?

Starlitexpress · 13/12/2021 17:43

Our Christmas party was last week and we had a lovely time thank you. It is also safe enough for me to commute to work, spend all day with the general public and then commute home again.....sometimes via the pub.

Also, I'm in London and the R rate is 1.0 to 1.2, hasn't changed much for ages, so I might think differently if the R rate was 4.0 like it is where you are.

lljkk · 13/12/2021 17:44

So that means we should all go & party anyway -- right? Since infection can't be prevented even with the most effective measures & science available. We may as well have our lives back as much as possible & give up worrying about Covid since it's impossible to prevent. Is the lesson I learn from that story.

@AchillesLastStand

That’s nice. Some lovely selfish posters on here who are more than happy to pass the virus on to anyone they meet, and will directly contribute to the next lockdown and schools closing.
Oh do shut up I am nearly on the verge of checking myself in to a mental hospital I have taken 3 jabs done everything ask so no I don't care about other people now just me my family I have done nearly 2 years and can't take much more call mr selfish as much as you like
Shallwegoforawalk · 13/12/2021 17:44

How long do you want us to postpone real life for? Variant 627? So far omnicron seems pretty mild.

People can still pack into a football stadium, go to a massive wedding, go to a sweaty heaving nightclub. But Xmas drinks are the new baddie. Yeah that makes sense.

There will be more deaths from the effect on mental health than the virus itself. Hibernation is no way to exist. Life is passing by, let's enjoy what we can while we can. We will all likely get it at some point, it's never going away now.

Biscuit

And that's coming from someone who's CEV.

Stop blaming people. It's a virus, and a very transmissible variant at that. You could just as easily catch it in Sainsbury's or at work or from school age DC.

So, so done with this 'selfish' crap and blaming people for lockdowns.

Happy1982ish · 13/12/2021 17:45

Makes zero difference to me

Zero

NewbieAlert · 13/12/2021 17:45

We did ours in November but even if it had been next week I’d still go.
I’ve had the jabs. I do the lfts. I’m not prepared to isolate myself voluntarily. That may be selfish to an extent but I’ve followed the guidance the entire time. I would still be following the guidance if I did attend a Christmas party next week. It’s worth remembering that.

MissPeregrine · 13/12/2021 17:46

In our case the Christmas party would have meant mixing with hundreds of other, mask free party goers, drinking, dancing, etc etc

I don’t think I’d be doing to Conga anytime soon with the people sitting in the tube or shopping centre! Far easier to social distance while wearing a mask!

MissPeregrine · 13/12/2021 17:46

*the not to

@me4real

protect the NHS.

The NHS is not fit for purpose if it really needs 'protecting.' Better to make it not shit.

NHS: Let's Make It Not Shit

should SO be Labour's slogan for the next election!

Beer2bed · 13/12/2021 17:47

Difficult when got primary age DC in school. They are just as likely to get infected at school and bring it home. So we are still having our work xmas meal out at the weekend. Only about 10 of us.

Cant protect ourselves from it if the kids are in school so are cracking on and really hoping for the best. If the schools had been closed then that would have been a different matter.

It only strikes when you are having fun
fakereview · 13/12/2021 17:49

I went to a work Christmas do last week. We were meant to have another one this week but it was cancelled. DH's Christmas do has been postponed until February.

As far as I know, none of my colleagues has covid and I think we'd know by now as it was Tuesday.

Not happy about passing it on but if it happens it happens , I’m not staying at home to protect others it’s not happening any more .
LemonSwan · 13/12/2021 17:52

I know 2 separate people who had negative LFT’s but were positive on PCR.
All those people who tested negative may not actually all be negative

If your infective enough to infect the majority of an xmas party then I am pretty sure it would come up on an LFT nine times out of 10.

Obviously its not perfect and some may slip the net, but thats not bar enough for me to not see anyone when its looking like xmas may be cancelled.

Oh fuck off OP.
Tavelo · 13/12/2021 17:55

I've already had both actual coronavirus and the vaccines. The only reason I won't go to my work do is if they cancel it. Tbh my experience of the NHS is that it is a joke at the best of times. Not saying I want it to collapse far from it but after suffering and complaining for over 10 years only to diagnose myself with coeliac disease I'm not really in the mood to prop up complacent middle class doctors by giving up my personal life.

Exactly this

It’s amazing that after all this time people think that a combination of covid, catching up with backlogs, having staff absence due to covid and completing the vaccine program can all be completed with a flick of a switch

People who have never managed anything complicated in their lives I expect

BarefootHippieChick · 13/12/2021 17:57

@Sparklfairy

I'm hoping if its spreads as quickly as they think then it'll be really mild for the majority, and add to our immunity.

The problem doesn't just lie in hospitalisation though. I think what the government are really worried about is millions of people being forced into isolation at once, unable to go to work and the impact on the economy, supply chains, infrastructure etc.

This is spot on, and that's why they've now agreed Omicron contacts can still go to work etc, as long as they're testing daily. Because otherwise the economy and infrastructure is fucked.

ancientgran · 13/12/2021 17:59

For me the trouble is catching it this week is going to ruin Christmas. I didn't see my children or grandchildren last Christmas so I want to do what I can to see them this year. If that means no parties/socialising for a couple of weeks then that's what I'll have to do.

Different people have different circumstances, if it was just me and DH and we had no kids I'd probably think the Christmas party was important.
