Victoria Derbyshire on Twitter has shared that her triple vaccinated brother contracted omicron at a Christmas meal out. Out of 21 one of them 17 have now tested positive.

Imagine thousands of similar mini super-spreading events up and down the country this week and where that could lead.

Hospitality won’t survive another lockdown, will it?

There are needs and wants. Kids need to be in school.

And people in the hospitality trade need their jobs.

To everyone saying before they meet up 'everyone' does a LFT, how do you know this? Do you just take their word for it? Anyone could say they've done one

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/12/2021 16:56

That’s not the point. The point is that they may pass it on to people who wouldn’t be fine and end up in hospital

Isn't that how it always was pre-covid? Or once again is it only covid that counts as a potentially dangerous virus these days?

TheWeeDonkeys · 13/12/2021 16:59

@LampLighter414

I have contracted covid. How do I find out if its omicron? My google searches say it takes weeks for the analysis to be done, and its not clear if the NHS will even tell you if they find out it is omicron? So not sure how Victoria can claim its Omicron unless the party was weeks ago
They contact you after you've tested positive on a pcr, and send you more tests out for you and everyone in the household, these are sent back by courier and re tested for the new strain. So could be weeks after first testing positive on a ocr to finding out if its the new strain. But they don't test everyone's pcr just batches. I only know because they rang me today for me to retest.

Husband went out for his works do a week on saturday, 12 out of 20 that went tested positive a few days later, now 22 people in his work have tested positive. Hes now passed it to me.
We are both double vaccinated. Had to cancel my booster as I tested positive.

PoshPyjamas · 13/12/2021 17:01

I am more than happy to go to Christmas parties.

I asked the T&T who called about my DD PCR, and she said it was not omicron but Delta. So I guess the lab can detect it pretty quickly.
me4real · 13/12/2021 17:04

It sounds very contagious from what some of you are saying. But of course that doesn't mean it's severe. The Omicron variant is probably less severe than the Delta, which was less severe than the one before etc. This is how viruses tend to behave- they get less serious.

I guess joined up thinking isn’t your strong point.

Just because someone has a different opinion to you doesn't mean they're thick or illogical @AchillesLastStand .

DownToTheSeaAgain · 13/12/2021 17:06

I am not sure the point of your AIBU. You clearly think you are not at all U and everyone who disagrees with you is.

I am going to carry on with life as normal as it can be until such time as I or one of my family inevitably catch it. I will then hope that we are not too ill. This because life is far too short to stop living.

I will of course adhere to any restrictions or demands put upon me because that's the law.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 13/12/2021 17:07

Ha. I realise now that this is not AIBU.

You are however BU in your responses

I don't think they got the response they had hoped for.

So was this two weeks ago? Why, given similar super-spreader anecdotes from then did they not do it. The whole Do as I Say not as I did vibe from people is really wearing. Are they really so stupid that they need to experience it so closely.

Or did they actually make a personal judgement and decide that their personal risk was low enough that it was worth it - and if they did, they need a little more humbleness saying "we / my brother fucked up" rather than simply "he got to have his fun, sucks to you"

Dreamstate · 13/12/2021 17:10

I will do and go whenever I want within the laws set out in plan b. So if going to restaurants, clubs, shops, big events, cinema are all open than I will go.

Don't care if you think I'm being selfish, im not breaking any law so piss off.

SivvyPlath · 13/12/2021 17:11

Not at all.

Misspacorabanne · 13/12/2021 17:13

Lateral flows didn't pick up my covid case, even testing on the days leading up to, and once my symptoms had started. I don't think it can be technique always, as I did my own pcr in the same way and that gave me a positive result. I don't think lateral flows are accurate at all. I'd do a lateral flow before a party, but even if it was negative, and I didn't have symptoms, I wouldn't feel confident that I definitely wasn't carrying the virus.

Sparklfairy · 13/12/2021 17:14

I'm hoping if its spreads as quickly as they think then it'll be really mild for the majority, and add to our immunity.

The problem doesn't just lie in hospitalisation though. I think what the government are really worried about is millions of people being forced into isolation at once, unable to go to work and the impact on the economy, supply chains, infrastructure etc.

HesBoughtAFuckingHat · 13/12/2021 17:20

Fuck that, I’m done with it. Assuming Omicron is not more serious in terms of symptoms (and so far it doesn’t seem to be) we are once again curbing our lifestyles to protect the NHS. The government knew there were going to be more waves and did not prepare in any way. It has all been put into Joe Public, again. Any resulting deaths are the direct fault of the government’s refusal to help the NHS.

mangodreams · 13/12/2021 17:21

I think the advice now has to be limit big Christmas gatherings and don't rely on Lateral Flow tests.

My whole family have had daily negative LFs and we have all now tested positive on PCR. Close contacts should isolate and go get a PCR no matter how many vaccinations they have had.

MissPeregrine · 13/12/2021 17:23

We decided not to go to our Christmas party last weekend, due to the fact that it was a big event and we have plans over the next weekend and of course Christmas the following week. The plans we have arranged mean far more to us than a works Christmas do but I appreciate not everyone feels the same way.

The problem we face is being told to isolate if we catch it, if this falls during Christmas that’s going to be pretty shit!

Laiste · 13/12/2021 17:23

A lot of people are feeling too worried or guilty to go out to places which are still 'allowed', and others are pointing fingers and shaking heads (like the OP) doing the government's job of shutting down hospitality by stealth while dodging paying furlough.

Businesses will go under and the government will be all wide eyed innocent - ''but we didn't say you couldn't go out ...''

The Christmas party was a HUGE event!

PanicPrevention · 13/12/2021 17:34

Even if all the guests at a party, meal or drinks have done a lateral flow test, the person who serves you most probably wont have.
I work in hospitality and none of us are testing regularly.
I need to be at work to make money and I need customers to come in so I can work full time hours.

me4real · 13/12/2021 17:36

protect the NHS.

The NHS is not fit for purpose if it really needs 'protecting.' Better to make it not shit.

ihatefacemasks · 13/12/2021 17:36

@LivingNextDoorToNorma

There are needs and wants. Kids need to be in school.

They also need to be housed and fed. There are many, many thousands of people who rely on hospitality jobs to do that. What do you propose they do? Most still haven’t recovered from the huge hit their incomes took last year and early this year.

I want my child in school as much as anyone, but I’m not arrogant or naive enough to think that should be everyone’s number one priority.

I was going to take issue with this too, @LivingNextDoorToNorma but was too cross to do it politely so decided I had better say nothing!

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/12/2021 17:37

Kids are school. Both me and oh out at a work. We lateral flow and wear masks. If we are going to get, we are going to get. So I intend to live my life while I am at it until wee Nippy grounds us.
