Victoria Derbyshire on Twitter has shared that her triple vaccinated brother contracted omicron at a Christmas meal out. Out of 21 one of them 17 have now tested positive.

Imagine thousands of similar mini super-spreading events up and down the country this week and where that could lead.

January is going to be bad isn't it ?
:(
So depressing isn't it ?

Surely the cause of this is someone not bothering to LFT before hand?

I just had a packed weekend of social events and every single one, everyone attending was asked to and did an LFT.

Surely that is the solution rather than cancelling everything?

I had Covid two weeks ago. Confirmed by PCRs (and feeling like shit with all the symptoms), all my LFTs came back negative. They're not that accurate.

Possibly, but LFTs are far from failsafe (neither are PCRs for that matter!). Even if they were, it's entirely possible that your infection builds up to infectious levels in the hours between taking the LFT and the party ending.
Choux · 13/12/2021 15:42

Heard from a friend today about a Christmas party held last Thursday attended by two offices of the same company. It was a dinner so slightly less mingling than if it was just drinks.

150 people attended. So far 9 positives have been found. Of course they could have caught it on Weds or Fri but covid is out there.

IncessantNameChanger · 13/12/2021 15:45

I dont have a Christmas work meal but I'm still likely to catch it anyway due to having four kids in four different schools. On that basis I'm not cancelling anything. If it's really that infectious most people wont be avoiding it this time. I'm going to catch it at some point which will be over winter when NHS is creaking as per every year for the last few decades.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 13/12/2021 15:46

Or they did an LFT but their technique was off and so they had a false negative.

LFTs have a false negative rate even in trained and experienced hands. It is higher when done by untrained Joe Public.

It's not going to stop infectious people being out and about. The aim is to reduce them to a level that is tolerable (both in terms of stress on medical services and generally in public opinion)

It's not a guarantee that they won't be at your gathering. And the longer the interval between the event and the test beforehand, the greater the change that the person who is just beginning to incubate has reached infectious level

How are those 17 people doing? All fine?

LFTs have a high false negative rate! Surely people know this by now.

The government is foolish for encouraging people to rely on them.

That’s not the point. The point is that they may pass it on to people who wouldn’t be fine and end up in hospital.
SivvyPlath · 13/12/2021 16:06

And there will also be plenty that will go ahead where everyone is fine.

🤷🏻‍♀️

If your trying to decide if you want to go to a party…

First ask yourself - Do you want to go?

If yes then go.
If no then don’t.

It's so depressing that the default position is to find someone to blame.

There are countless threads on here where people confirm that they did lateral flow tests which were negative but a pcr was positive.

Booklover3 · 13/12/2021 16:09

I’ve simplified it.

If you are trying to decide if you want to go to that Christmas party…

First ask yourself - do you want to go?

If the answer is yes - then go.
If the answer is no - then don’t.

Booklover3 · 13/12/2021 16:10

Ffs… bloody phone! Didn’t post. Typed it again.
Posted both. 🤷‍♀️

AchillesLastStand · 13/12/2021 16:14

That’s nice. Some lovely selfish posters on here who are more than happy to pass the virus on to anyone they meet, and will directly contribute to the next lockdown and schools closing.

Oh, give over ffs 😂

Doje · 13/12/2021 16:15

I'm currently isolating after contracting Covid at my Christmas 'party'... 🙄 It was only a handful of us out for dinner, so could have been worse.

I can't speak for the person that gave it to me, but I did lateral flows every day in the run up to getting symptoms, which were all negative. I even did a test after my PCR - Also negative. Maybe I'm doing them wrong, but if I am, then I'd hazard a guess that the majority of other people are doing them wrong too.

IncessantNameChanger · 13/12/2021 16:16

But it's got a doubling rate of about 2 days and I think I read a R rate of 4.

So you could spread it all over the place before even knowing you had it doing anything, work, shopping etc. I dont like this blame game either.

You would be a medical miracle not to reinvent anyone with this or total saint self isolating for ten days at every, I do mean every human contact you make.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 13/12/2021 16:16

Her brother was triple jabbed and caught it. All people at the party were vaccinated. And nearly all of them caught it.

The guy below replying is correct. Makes the vaccine passport pretty pointless.

Thankfully this mini outbreak cannot be blamed on the unvaccinated Confused

No one is selfish on here except for you. You are pushing your own agenda here.

Everyone else is getting on with their lives as they are currently free to do… it would be a different story if it was against the law or guidance. It isn’t.
