Anyone else think our government took the royal piss last Christmas?

So the whole Downing Street party last year...this has really riled me. They put us all on restrictions against seeing family and friends while they all had a Christmas piss up with wine, cheese and no social distancing.
My MIL spent last Christmas alone 80 miles away as she didn't want to breach any rules, I know she could have come as she lives alone but she didn't believe it was allowed.
Now there's talk of restrictions on this Christmas? Well I'm sorry but I won't be complying with any restrictions over Christmas, I'll be seeing family as planned.
Our government is beyond useless

A poster on another thread made the most powerful comment. Ask yourself why the people telling us to be afraid weren't afraid themselves. That's the question that needs to be answered.

Peanut82 · 07/12/2021 22:16

We haven't seen MIL this year except on FaceTime so she's definitely coming this year. My mums in hospital recovering from hip surgery and lives alone so we'll be seeing her too, it's been a shit year for everyone so this Christmas is all about family

They should face action for this

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 22:17

I couldn't be with my 98 year old dad who died from covid , same as millions of others. That was so hard and still haunts me to be honest.
Then we hear that they had a laugh and a joke at not following the rules and did what they liked when they were meant to be in ' tier 3' just before Christmas.
If anyone tries any restrictions this year I think it'll be a huge two fingers to the lot of them.
Who can blame people ? Really.

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo

Well clearly they're all a bunch of absolute bottom of the barrel scum sucking tosspots....but.... I'll still be maintaining a distance from people this Christmas because the only people I would want to spend time with outside of my DH and DD are my in laws and they are all vulnerable for various medical reasons.

I don't follow the rules because the govt tells me to, I follow the logic of not wanting to infect people I love and who are more likely to be made seriously Ill by this virus. The simple fact is I have a 7 yr old in primary school who is always a Covid infection risk, and a 94yr old Nan-in-law who is cared for by MIl who's in her 70s with rheumatoid arthritis.

We'll do an outdoor meet up with MIL, we'll do virtual meet ups and phone calls, we'll exchange presents but spending hours indoors together is too big a risk with the Transformers variant invading the country.

I agree it's sensible to think about personal Covid risk. But a lot of the time last year we knew that we as a family were personally extremely low risk (when DD wasn't in school and I was working from home). The only reason we didn't meet up with my parents during that time was because we were keeping to the rules.

It's coming up on ITV news again in a minute, her laughing smiling smug face taking the piss out of us all

Yep, that women should hang her head in shame !
lightisnotwhite · 07/12/2021 22:20

Wasn’t the “party” all staff though? So really just like any other workplace meeting but with wine and cheese? I’ve worked through the whole thing and we my colleagues were happy to share a bit if food and schloer with each other ( wine not allowed).

Last year was zones wasn’t it? We went to see grandparents and then had to rush back. It was stricter but London and the SE were relatively less badly hit. Or am I remembering it wrongly?

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 07/12/2021 22:21

@Remmy123

It's a disgrace and I am so pleased I kept on seeing my mum and family despite what the government said.
I have young DC at home and over 18yo DC in their own homes/student digs. No way I was going to stop seeing my older kids just because the government told me to. Even more glad I didn't now.
the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 22:21

She admitted that they didn't social distance etc !!
It was a big party !!

wasthataburp · 07/12/2021 22:22

@PieMistee

My aunt died alone s the week of this party. I hate them
Sorry to hear that. It's things like this that make me so mad.
BunsyGirl · 07/12/2021 22:22

@lightisnotwhite Exactly. We had a “party” in the office last year. I wonder how many other people did?!

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 22:24

Lots of people did follow the rules though !
I know that many didn't , but millions did
They are the ones feeling like mugs now.

rrhuth · 07/12/2021 22:25

Fuck the intro was very strong on ITV News...

We need a new government. Not a new Tory leader - a new government.

Yep, but people will still vote them in :(

The government should not have done.

They are the government.

They have to do the right thing. Johnson is incapable of behaving like a PM.

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 22:28

Someone has sat on this footage for a long time ! Why ??

Essexmum321 · 07/12/2021 22:28

Please don’t believe the BS the media feed you

gettingolderandgrumpy · 07/12/2021 22:28

Boris absolutely has to go at best he’s took the absolute piss out of us at worst he’s made everyone think fuck it and I’m one of them , plus all the conspiracy theorists out there will just be going covid is bollocks if it was real the government wouldn’t have parties etc. the damage that has been done is shocking and quite frankly he’s not fit to be in charge . I fear for the future of this country while he’s in charge .

bumbleymummy · 07/12/2021 22:29

If Labour were in we would have been masked all summer, using vaccine passports and probably going into another lockdown now. Many of us are politically homeless atm :(

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 22:30

Nobody will follow any rules now ..
I can't say I blame them , I wear a mask but kudos to those that don't and I've had covid and it was awful

I take it you hadn't made it a criminal offence for many of us in the North to even have gatherings in our gardens from Autumn onwards? (Unless you are one of the Downing Street insiders laughing at us plebs for keeping to the rules!)
