Anyone else think our government took the royal piss last Christmas?

So the whole Downing Street party last year...this has really riled me. They put us all on restrictions against seeing family and friends while they all had a Christmas piss up with wine, cheese and no social distancing.
My MIL spent last Christmas alone 80 miles away as she didn't want to breach any rules, I know she could have come as she lives alone but she didn't believe it was allowed.
Now there's talk of restrictions on this Christmas? Well I'm sorry but I won't be complying with any restrictions over Christmas, I'll be seeing family as planned.
Our government is beyond useless

@PoorMegHopkins

People died alone because of the rules. They’ve made mugs of people who couldn’t visit dying relatives.
This is how I feel.

We all made sacrifices but these were some of the biggest.

It's so disrespectful for those in government and those in number 10 to make a mockery of that.

PrincessNutNuts · 08/12/2021 01:29

@Dogatetheleftovers

I’ve just watched Sky News covering the story and one of the journalists doing the press review said that there’s more leaks to come about this. The government have been despicable, firstly in even holding a party when everyone else was in lockdown but to then spill endless denials which nobody believes. My elderly dm spent Christmas on her own because, like so many others, she wanted to follow the rules. We never saw my in laws at all either and my FIL died this year, it’s heartbreaking to know that we weren’t there for his last Christmas nor for the coming months when restrictions were so tight.
I'm so sorry.

I can't bear that they are making a mockery of really significant personal sacrifices that so many families made for what we all believed was the common good.

JessieLongleg · 08/12/2021 01:34

So much fun spending Christmas alone after I just spent money on food which was special to share. People have had to restrict less people at a funeral that their Xmas party.

Booklover3 · 08/12/2021 01:34

Me too @PrincessNutNuts sad and furious.

Exactly that.

So many people did Christmas alone because they wanted to help, to do the right thing.

I'm really angry that the people who made the rules didn't follow them.

@Booklover3

Me too *@PrincessNutNuts* sad and furious.
All the older people in the care homes that didn't understand why they couldn't have visitors.

And number 10 were breaking their own rules then giggling as they messed about practising how to lie to us.

I'm going to have to put a rom com on and try to chill out.

Booklover3 · 08/12/2021 01:50

@PrincessNutNuts good luck! I’m going to put the phone down and read a book before trying to sleep again!

ElftonWednesday · 08/12/2021 02:01

The party was on the actual day they cancelled Christmas in the south east.

Watapalava · 08/12/2021 06:49

whilst im not condoning what they did that guidance doesnt apply as it took place in work and was likely classed as business meeting with food and drink supplied

We have large business meetings of up to 35 before xmas - it was in a large distanced room but big groups for work were not banned

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 08/12/2021 06:54

Don’t change your behaviour regarding covid restrictions, change your behaviour regarding voting for them!

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2021 06:55

Allegra said ' they didn't socially distance'
Then laughed about it

blatantly laughing while people were suffering because of their actions is absolutely wrong though. Clearly just a big joke to our Government
GiveMeNovocain · 08/12/2021 06:59

If they believed there was a real risk to them they'd be the first in the bunker. They were screamed at to lockdown by the public so they did. They did that to appease the media and unions not because it makes much difference in the long run. Plus they won't be paying for it. That burden will fall on people least able to afford it.

On the other hand Labour behaved the same in wales. There's no good option

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 08/12/2021 06:59

There really was no need for your mil to spend the day alone, super sad

Secret Santa happen at your business meetings?

Games?

rrhuth · 08/12/2021 07:16

The point @Watapalava is they are the government who made laws which seriously impacted people's lives. They asked us for compliance and caution.

There is no excuse and the majority of people think they have behaved disgustingly, because the majority of people behaved decently.

This was not for work. We all know that. They did the wrong thing.

I know. We tried to tell her but she was so scared of catching covid or breaking rules

Looks like Javid has pulled out of the morning slot on the BBC to talk about the vaccine...

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 08/12/2021 07:59

@MimiDaisy11

I don't follow the rules because the govt tells me to

This! I don’t like that the response from many is that they’re going to act recklessly because the government is incompetent. We’re not teenagers rebelling against our parents. We should act responsibly even when the government doesn’t.

But we all did, and have done, and where has it got us?

Isn't there a saying about doing something several times and expecting a different outcome?

milly74 · 08/12/2021 08:27

don't forget as well the terrifying messaging from the Government about this virus - people were absolutely scared (and many still are) about Covid. It seems perhaps it just wasn't quite that scary after all...

MimiDaisy11 · 08/12/2021 08:33

@Getyourarseofffthequattro
But wouldn’t you be saying that regardless of whether the government had a party or not?
If you want to argue against the measures being effective do that, but my response was to those saying they’re not going to comply with laws/rules because people in the government didn’t. Why doesn’t that apply for anything else? I mean if people in parliament are caught speeding or drink driving no one says well fine I can do that too.

idiotfacelicker · 08/12/2021 08:36

@Puppylucky

A poster on another thread made the most powerful comment. Ask yourself why the people telling us to be afraid weren't afraid themselves. That's the question that needs to be answered.

That comment isn't as clever as you think it is. In fact it demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of restrictions.

Yes, and this was before the vaccinations

Because the rules are bullshit, aren't they?

It's not the same as drink driving where there is an actual risk of death or imprisonment. Speeding most people do anyway and just avoid getting caught so that is probably comparable.

They're showing us that it's clearly not that risky because is they thought there was a genuine chance of their impending death they wouldn't do it. As someone said those selfish fuckers would be in a bunker at the first sight of actual risk.

People are opening their eyes and realising that actually if they don't think it's dangerous, nor should we.

DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 08/12/2021 08:39

This would sink any other prime minister and government in living memory. It won’t sink Boris Johnson though, for some reason that I don’t quite understand. It’s fucked. That mock press conference is the icing on the cunt cake too. It’s horrifying.
