Feeling so down about this - here we go again!

This is beginning to feel like early March 2020. Social things are being cancelled, face masks are back and the government are meeting tonight to talk about possible further restrictions. Alongside this cases have risen a lot in the last few days.
Apart from the fights over toilet roll, it almost feels like the start again. And we don't even have nice sunny weather. Instead it is cold, dark and miserable.
I have just been feeling so down about it today. Anyone else?

I’ve just caught my first known case of covid, no idea if I’ve had it before. Been in bed for two weeks so all my parties are cancelled for me at least! The irony is I came down with it the day I was supposed to get my first jab. This is the third time I’ve cancelled the vaccination from being ill, but the first two times weren’t covid. Maybe I’ll be 4th time lucky.

My mums tested positive but she’s just had a sore throat whereas I’ve been feeling awful. Makes me really regret not having had it. But to be fair it was out of my control. I’m quite upset to be missing our department bingo night

Are you quite young? The only people I know who may be in your situation at this point in the pandemic are children. All adults I know (of all ages) who aren’t anti Vaxers had their first jab ages ago (even if they had to postpone cos of a bout of illness).
CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/12/2021 09:39

DH’s colleague was told yesterday he has the omnicrom variant (had just returned from a work trip to a couple of African countries, so they were on it quickly, multiple PCRs along the way). He feels fine, just felt a bit tired one day. He had only had COVID mid October prior to that, fully jabbed etc. Think he may even have had a booster.

For me this could be a hopeful sign, not doom and gloom that we are losing the battle cos of new variants happening in the fully jabbed and those who have had recent natural infections. I hope that it will be a v mild variant. At least in vaccinated people. The challenge will be getting everyone vaccinated not only in our country but around the world.

I don’t know much about disease control but I am really pinning my hopes on any new variants from now on losing their ability to cause serious illness. So that eventually it really will be something we can live with, like flu, and getting the flu jab every winter.

It’s just getting to that point that is difficult at the moment. I feel the restrictions are there only while we wait to get more data about Omnicrom. I’m not sure society will sustain multiple lots of restrictions over the next few years each time a new variant is identified, though. Perhaps eventually it’ll just be the case that media just report it as a small news item “a new variant of COVID had been identified and is being studied. Vaccines will be tweaked accordingly so it is important to ensure you have the latest version of the jab” etc etc

At the minute life is just a bit crap with all this up and down uncertainty. It’s so very restrictive if we take the attitude that we must be ultra cautious till we know more about Omnicrom.

treedragon · 04/12/2021 09:41

It's spreading like wildfire. I expect as per last time the Governement will do nothing until it is too late. They should just impose the restrictions we had last year and get it over with - then we all know where we stand.
The first thing thaat should have happened was the banning of all flights once people were home and quarantined. Global travel is to blame for this spread - people gallivanting about.

treedragon · 04/12/2021 09:43

The issue with this is - while it might be mild that does not necessarily mean it is less dangerous. It could cause lasting damage and long covid more readily. People are right to be cautious and I am sick of the gung-ho prats that are only impatient.

weddingguesttbc · 04/12/2021 09:44

@treedragon why would they impose the restrictions we had last year now...

They care about the economy and the numbers in hospital - they are down (for now) so they'll hold off

Summersdreaming · 04/12/2021 09:45

Not for me Smile I'm at a meal with 18 people later, and a family party for 20 tomorrow, my works do will be for 130 people on 17th December. This doesn't even feel like October 20 and the ridiculous tiers and curfews and rules, I predicted when the pubs closed for "3 weeks" that they would be closed till spring, and they were.

I'm having a quite Christmas anyway as we could be moving house at any time but I feel 100x more positive than this time last year.

Summersdreaming · 04/12/2021 09:46

*quiet

treedragon · 04/12/2021 09:48

I can't think of anything worse than a works Christmas do Covid or no Covid. Why would anyone want to spend hours of time out of work with a load of people they spend most days of the year with?

Says you- sitting in your nice warm house with food drink and items that have been brought to you from all over the world. Oh the irony

Because we like eachother, we finish early and still get paid, it's very local for us and the boss pays for a 3 course meal and plenty of booze. Much better than a Friday afternoon in the office!
Kshhuxnxk · 04/12/2021 10:01

Doesn't feel like March 2020 at all to me. I'm past it all tbh. I won't be restricting who comes to my house nor the distance I travel. Last year I could have driven 30 miles to my DIL in Glasgow (covid hotbed) gone in and used her loo but I couldn't drive 30 miles the other way to walk on the beach with me my DP and the dogs. I couldn't get into my old mums house as she was bloosy hysterical. So they can do anything they want but unless theres an army stopping me nothing is changing. Also not working from home as my house is too cold.

Shitzngiggles · 04/12/2021 10:33

@treedragon because some people actually like and get on with the people they work with. I'm having lunch later with about 10 ladies I first met 40 years ago as colleagues. Still friends all these years later although all moved on to different jobs and lifestyles now obviously.

julieca · 04/12/2021 11:42

The estimate seems to be that cases will really rise in Britain from mid to late January. If there is any panic buying, it will be then.

@daisydoh DPs Christmas do was cancelled tonight because too many people dropped out. DP has talked to some people tonight, and everyone who has dropped out is parents. They are too worried about getting the new variant and Christmas day being mucked up.“

Sounds reasonable.

That definitely feels like the early days of the pandemic.

Precautionary Principle people like me think what we've seen in other countries will also happen here if we don't take action to stop it.

Other people think it's overblown and don't think we should overreact to something that hasn't happened yet.

I feel like I'm watching the sage old cat crash happening in slow motion, and even though we've got all this advance notice of the crisis to come nobody in charge is going to do enough to stop it.

(Although, to be fair, if the government did take early effect action and the crisis was averted some people would say "See. I told you it was nothing to worry about.")

julieca · 04/12/2021 11:54

Just to say, if panic buying does happen, it will be caused by delivery drivers and supermarket workers off sick, leading to some empty shelves.

PrincessNutNuts · 04/12/2021 11:55

Sorry for all the typos.

It should be same old car crash and early effective action

My cat basically hit post in that one.

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2021 11:58

The empty shelves are caused by distribution/sipply issues and a shortage of HGV drivers and have been for months. Nothing to do with delivery drivers and staff off sick. It's Christmas soon and it will be hard to tell the panic buyers from people that generally buy a lot of food at this time of year. I'm sure that lots of people keep a stash of non perishables after last year anyway. There was no evidence of any panic buying that I could see in Morrison's this morning and actually the shelves looked pretty full.
julieca · 04/12/2021 12:05

@Sparklingbrook read my previous comments. I was talking about mid to late January and caused by the rising cases of the new variant, and staff being off sick. Its what happened in 2020. There was often enough food in the store, but not enough staff to get it all out on the shelves.
And I also said it may not happen this time. But if it did, this is when I would expect it to happen.
A lot of people will have supplies in for Christmas. But by mid to late January those will have disappeared in most households.
If it does happen I wouldnt expect it to last long.

It's crystal ball time again, I see.
The people I know that work in food retail didn't report any problems with not having enough staff last year to get stuff on the shelves even when they had quite a few isolating.

I don't think you can guess what's going to be happening in 6-8 week's time although I know people like to do that and get everyone to have a panic about it.

julieca · 04/12/2021 12:17

Honestly sparklingbrook you are consistent in sneering at people you disagree with. I recognise few names here, but I recognise yours. It really isn't pleasant.

I recognise names on here too. I am not sneering, I am just saying that IMO there is no need to panic.
julieca · 04/12/2021 12:21

And I agree with that. I said if there is panic buying, and there might be, it wont happen till mid to late January. And I don't think it will last long.
