Additional 249 Omicron cases today, that's a big rise.

TokyoSushi · 10/12/2021 16:05

And now 443 today, it's definitely taking off.

Thread here - latest risk assessment with information re vaccine escape.
If I've understood it correctly:
2x AZ - total vaccine escape
2x Pfizer - 30% protection
2jabs plus mRNA booster - 79-75% protection no matter what first vaccine was.
*
Get boostered!*

bumbleymummy · 10/12/2021 17:55

Reinfection rate?

justaskingagain · 10/12/2021 17:57

@bumbleymummy

Reinfection rate?
3-8 fold increase in reinfection rate compared to Delta

Should say 70-75%

The state in Australia I live in has just decided that any close contacts of Omicron or suspected will have to isolate for 14 days - even if fully vaccinated. Previously it was 7 days if vaccinated and 14 days if unvaccinated.

To say this has gone down like a lead balloon is an understatement. The whole state has grand total of two people in hospital with Covid! The only hope is there’s a state election coming up so the government can’t afford to piss the population off too much.

justaskingagain · 10/12/2021 18:06

@bluetongue Which vaccine have most people had there? If AZ it would make sense.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2021 18:12

Saying 'get boosted' is fine. DH is 39 and a half.

Can't find any walk in he's eligible.

Mine is booked in, but not for a fortnight.

It varies star to state but in South Australia where I am most people would have had Pfizer. Also, because of the later roll out the vaccines were given more recently than the UK. I’m 45, got my vaccine as soon as I was eligible and won’t be able to get my booster until mid January 2022.

We currently have a vaccinated rate of around 83% of over 12’s, hoping to reach 90% in early January plus 5-11 year olds will be eligible for vaccines in January. In no way comparable to South Africa. The whole state has had 4 Covid deaths which is great but has also made us overly risk averse.

I just read in bbc headlines that if you have booster that it prevents 75% of people getting covid symptoms. But it doesn’t say if those 75% of people who will have covid and be spreading it without knowing (as they have no symptoms). Isn’t it easier to contain a virus that has symptoms? Could we inadvertently be feeling the numbers ?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/12/2021 18:21

Is anyone else getting a sense of being drip fed? The possible restrictions on care home visits, plus this new Cobra info?

SleevedOff · 10/12/2021 18:21

I came on to say the exact same thing.

The headline is really misleading as well. It should read "Three vaccine doses doesn't stop you from getting Omicron".

IndigoC · 10/12/2021 18:22

I’ve just had my third Moderna. Interested to see how it holds up to Omicron. Some preliminary neutralising data I read indicated Pfizer actually did a better job against Omicron, which is a reversal of the situation with Delta.

SleevedOff · 10/12/2021 18:24

The third does doesn't stop you from getting it either it seems.

I've also realised that it's not the main headline that's misleading but if you share the article and see it on WhatsApp, the first thing my eye was drawn to was is the initial line under the photo.

MaxNormal · 10/12/2021 18:26

The thing is there were plenty of vaccinated people catching Delta as well so vaccine escape is hardly new to this variant?

Turquoisesol · 10/12/2021 18:27

Yes sleevedoff I am pro vaccines. But you have to question the validity of a vaccine which just makes people asymptomatic. I mean very few other vaccines in the world are given to people with this being the result. Especially giving it to the younger population who likely won’t need hospital treatment. Perhaps it would be better just given to the vulnerable

JS87 · 10/12/2021 18:28

75% protection after three doses against omicron is better than protection against symptomatic delta after two doses.

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2021 18:29

It is being ' drip fed' especially today . Nicola Sturgeon sounded particularly grim this morning.
The guardian is reporting that two jabs isn't enough to combat Omicron , seems they are relying on people getting the boosters in the next few weeks.
As much as I loath Michael Gove, he did give a good interview about the Cobra meeting and seemed clear and concise on what the next steps may be.
It doesn't sound great, but I'm still clinging on to the fact that's mild and maybe people won't end up in hospital.
I guess will know more next week.

Turquoisesol · 10/12/2021 18:29

I would probably lay rather have a vaccine from a personal point of view as I don’t want to be symptomatic. But from a Pooh wide point of view, could be end up filling the spread with lots of asymptomatic people?

Turquoisesol · 10/12/2021 18:30

*population wide, not Pooh!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/12/2021 18:30

One thing I really don't get is why all the vaccines are so different if they're all supposed to be doing the same thing? And what's in that particular booster that is so amazing compared to the vaccines? Why wasn't there one standard optimised vaccine? Is it because capitalism or just scientific stuff? Why in a worldwide pandemic wasn't there total collaboration for the greater good? And if the booster is that amazing, why us it a booster not a new vaccine altogether? How come it's immediately brilliant for a variant that is apparently about a month old?

Genuinely interested because I've been trying to keep up, but failing miserably....

Amy figures on the efficacy of Moderna?
