Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

@ArthurTudor No in this country they’re not required in Early Years/daycare settings, thank god (in some US states though it’s a very different story). Early language acquisition doesn’t just take place in Early Years settings, however. And, yes, while masks in shops and on public transport probably wouldn’t be significantly detrimental to child development, if when they’re extended to include more settings such as toddler groups, other leisure settings etc young children will be missing quite a large chunk of their normal social interactions.

There will almost certainly be an increase in speech and language issues going forward. Many schools and SALT settings are already seeing it.

GiveMeNovocain · 28/11/2021 09:24

@AnkleDeep those are not randomised trials

Kjcf · 28/11/2021 09:24

So people should stop judging others for not wearing masks.

dementedma · 28/11/2021 09:25

The mask restrictions never lifted here in Scotland so havent had a break from it. If we go back to enforced WFH, that will be the worst thing for me.

ArthurTudor · 28/11/2021 09:25
@Cosmoz the problem is, people like you probably won’t get ill, but people like you will probably infect somebody else that will get ill. It’s people like you that I despise and cannot tolerate. I will call people like you out in public for not wearing a mask. You are a selfish little cnut.
How do you know why someone isn't wearing one? You have no right to call anyone out.

I have no problem wearing masks, but your attitude disgusts me.

Marimaur · 28/11/2021 09:26

We have to learn to live with it. It’s shit, but it is what it is.

Dindundundundeeer · 28/11/2021 09:27

@Ireallydontcare55

What worries me is how willingly people have accepted the idea of wearing a mask for the rest of their life potentially
Why would that be worrying?
Getyourarseofffthequattro · 28/11/2021 09:27

@Marimaur

We have to learn to live with it. It’s shit, but it is what it is.
This is not really living with it though it is?

Living with it would be carrying on as normal and dealing with the consequence.

Bring at risk of extra restrictions at any given moment is not living with it.

My doing nothing though there's a risk these toddler groups and other leisure activities will shut altogether.

RampantIvy · 28/11/2021 09:27

I have noticed more people back in masks in recent weeks, but I feel there needs to be an educational campaign to tell people (and yes it is mostly older people who do this) that wearing a mask under your nose is pointless.

MatildaIThink · 28/11/2021 09:28

@CaveWoman1

What would you rather OP? That our Govt. did nothing and just allowed the new variant to run rampant? You are being asked to wear a mask, to protect yourself and others. What’s the fuss?

And people still haven’t got their heads around the fact that life has changed as a result of the pandemic. Things won’t go back to how they were. They just won’t. Not for the foreseeable future anyway.

Adapt and move on.

Start prepping updated vaccines, which could be read in 80-100 days if needed, starting the work now and dropping it in a few weeks if not needed when we have more data would only cost £5-10 million at most.

Introduce and strictly enforce vaccine passports, whilst the current vaccines are not 100% effective against Omicron they do offer some protection (current estimates are 40-80%).

Increase health care funding by around £45 billion, with a push to train more doctors, nurses and other medical staff (which unfortunately has a lead time measured in years).

Increase education spending to counter the impact on children.

Properly evaluate the impact of various restrictions rather than purely focusing on the Covid death rate.

Accept that death is part of life.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 28/11/2021 09:28

Because it's any excuse for wilful misunderstanding / lack of empathy.

Iggly · 28/11/2021 09:29

I find it incredibly stressful living through covid.

I find it even more stressful having a government who are in some ways negligent and in other ways governing by headlines. As a result, our public health response has been lacking and we end up with u turns, changes in shift etc. it’s really awful.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 28/11/2021 09:29

Argh, meant to quite @Callcat! 🙄

TarasCrazyTiara · 28/11/2021 09:30

The point of vaccines is not dying. That’s enough point for me.

Twillow · 28/11/2021 09:30

@GiveMeNovocain

If masks worked we would have clear evidence of this by now. Show me one country or randomised trial that demonstrates they make any difference. They make people stand closer as they muffle conversation. They may even make the disease more aerosol. They're a complete sham
FGS Just google it yourself It's there They make a difference
Smallkeys · 28/11/2021 09:30

Scotland never stopped the masks and I think that was the right call as not everyone is fully vaccinated never mind the new strains etc. My DC is yet to have the 2nd jab.

I think being precautionary is the right course of action imagine it turned out to be deadly like Ebola then what would you be saying. They have said they don’t know what effects if any this has but they seem pretty worried.

The travel restrictions are frustrating but never went quick enough or far enough. I haven’t booked any holidays abroad as there was always this possibility especially as we head towards winter.

MatildaIThink · 28/11/2021 09:31

@RampantIvy

My guess would be that less than a third of people wearing masks wear them covering their nose and mouth, even fewer wear them properly, eg. Pulled tight enough around the sides, pinched around the nose etc.
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/11/2021 09:31

Why not wear a mask? It's been proven they help reduce spread. It alarms me that so many people, over the past few months, seem to have become gung-ho about wearing them. It's really not such a big deal and not sure why people think it is.

Benjispruce5 · 28/11/2021 09:33

I really don’t know why the gov aren’t making Covid vaccination passports mandatory at every gathering. I went to a music gig last week. Passes were mandatory. They were easily checked at the door as tickets were on phones too. Everyone felt safer, doors were open for ventilation etc.

Benjispruce5 · 28/11/2021 09:33

I haven’t stopped wearing my mask or cleaning my trolley.

EffOrfagain · 28/11/2021 09:33

I have just booked extra shopping slots so I don't need to worry about wearing a mask, booked Tesco and Waitrose up until after Christmas now

Flyonawalk · 28/11/2021 09:34

The WHO admitted back in March 2020 that masks do not inhibit disease.

Governments impose them for two reasons:

 1. The government can be seen to be doing something
 2. The government can measure compliance and judge public mood.

Masks have never been about stopping disease.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 28/11/2021 09:35

@Scottishskifun I wouldn't judge anyone not wearing a mask in public. The ones I judge are the ones who I know have no exemption and share shit about how it's easy to not wear a mask. Just say you are exempt and threaten people with DDA if you can't. Plus loads of other anti vax COVID denying nonsense.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 28/11/2021 09:36

DDA if they request mask wearing.
