Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

Omicron was not on our radar until very recently, it’s sudden arrival and marked differences make it a ‘potential’ threat to not just the vulnerable but anyone, because we simply do not know how it will behave. Until we can be sure it’s harmless or not we must remain cautious otherwise we risk taking several steps backwards.

They don’t call Saturday press conferences and impose immediate restrictions on travel from certain countries for nothing so that alone should make you realise the gravity of the situation.

Please, just wear a mask in stores and on public transport until we know what exactly it is we are dealing with, it’s really not a big deal.

What worries me is how willingly people have accepted the idea of wearing a mask for the rest of their life potentially
Much like when people willingly accepted the idea of wearing a seatbelt in a car when it was pointed out how much it reduces the potential to die in a car crash? It's really not a hardship to wear a mask for a short time in a shop, on a train, in a crowded place.

The point that people are making ‘it’s just a mask, it’s just a couple of days of isolation, well we were told this would not be returning. This is not normal life
Yes because clearly politicians now know the future
TuftyMarmoset · 27/11/2021 21:27

To be honest I would welcome masks on public transport forever, I commute by public transport and it’s always been a total germfest!

Porfre It has been the same since Labour decided all hospital wards must work at maximum capacity leaving no wriggle room for stress periods.
Labour haven’t been in power for almost twelve years. The Tories have had plenty of time to change NHS policies.

I’m a little confused. You don’t have a problem with wearing a mask? You have a problem with a new variant emerging that no one has control over? It’s not really the government’s or anyone else fault. It is what it is. If you don’t have a problem with masks then it shouldn’t bother you that much. If you have an issue with the vaccines then opt out. If you don’t want to isolate after going on holiday then don’t go to a country on the lists, go somewhere else. No one can predict whether new variants will emerge or when. Its covid and it’s variants today. Could be something else in the future. It’s life. It’s a shit situation, but not really anyone’s fault.
Twillow · 27/11/2021 21:28

With Boris's usual utter stupidity and disregard for anyone who knows more than him, even Daddy Pig, hospitality - where you are likely to sit with a bunch of mixed households speaking animatedly at close distance for an extended period - is exempt. 'Cos economy first.

Seriously?!?! I just do not I understand this attitude.

We have two children with an ASC, one is under the mask age which makes it easier. The other is a germaphobe so will wear masks and hand sanitise forever. In fact he prefers knowing that everyone else is clean too Grin

If you have a child with additional needs then it shouldn't even be an issue. I think when we see people without masks then we just assume there is a reason, I do anyway.

Also I really feel for those who are deaf, the current situation must be so, so awful.
It's difficult hearing what people are saying without being able to get cues from lip reading BlushThanks

Never stopped using them- out of curtesy to others and to protect myself.

Cherrytart23 · 27/11/2021 21:29

@Sparklingbrook

It seems that all the people that have the rage over some restrictions coming back presumed the Government had some sort of crystal ball style information that would have avoided it...
Its not rocket science that there would be other vibrants of it.
Awalkintime · 27/11/2021 21:30

The poster said it had been like that for years so I am pointing out who caused that. Yes they could've done but it was Labour's policy that created the problem.

CarrieBlue · 27/11/2021 21:30

@Ireallydontcare55

Why would you die of Covid ? You’re far more likely to die of cancer or Alzheimer’s.
Maybe a little less likely to die from Alzheimer’s in the near future: www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/nasal-vaccine-for-alzheimers-disease-set-to-begin-phase-i-trial/?fbclid=IwAR2msYYC7AVwb10bbo8CGGrbAPAKqC8v-qr54XazoyAvl-n6OBc_i25zhK0

I don’t see your point? Why haven’t the Tories changed it in 12 years?

I'm deaf. I've cried tonight at the thought of masks again. So so isolating and scary
Happypootle · 27/11/2021 21:31

It doesn''t bother me to wear a mask whilst shopping but it just feels pointless. Yes packed trains / buses/ tubes I can understand the mask mandate but I am closer to people for longer at work, in pubs, restaurants, theatre than I ever am in a shop. I just don't understand the focus on retail, most often you're just gliding past people and giving each other plenty of space anyway.

Thinkbiglittleone · 27/11/2021 21:31

As a vulnerable person I am genuinely proud of the people in our country who are willing to make this small sacrifice in their lives to try and help keep us vulnerable a little bit safer, so thank you to those who have continued to wear masks and a massive thank you to those who will return to doing so. Thank you for helping with an inclusive society,

leafyygreens · 27/11/2021 21:32

@Ireallydontcare55

It isn't just the risk of dying of COVID (which yes, is extremely low).

It's the risk of dying of preventable or treatable things that you aren't able to get appropriate care for, because hospitals are saturated with COVID patients.

The new variant may well fizzle out and turn out to not be an issue, but until more in known I can understand why some restrictions need to be put in place. No-one wants another proper lockown, which is what an emergency situation (ie coronavirus out of control) leads to.

@Ireallydontcare55

Dentistlakes · 27/11/2021 21:33

I’m feeling fed up top op. I’m in Scotland so masks have always been in place, but this new variant and the reintroduction of restrictions in England is making me feel pretty pessimistic and gloomy. It feels like it’s all closed in on us again.

uglyflowers · 27/11/2021 21:34

I had Covid in 2020 and again a couple of months ago. My cough was so bad that I wet myself multiple times. I’m out of breath when I go upstairs. I’m not dead and never needed medical help but it’s a bloody horrible illness. I’m self employed so I had to work through it too. I couldn’t face getting it again. I’m happy to wear a mask, as are my family.

Happyhappyday · 27/11/2021 21:34

I think you’re unreasonable for being naive enough to think the government could magically say “we won’t have restrictions again.” OF COURSE the UK was going to end up with restrictions again. The virus was always going to mutate because that’s what evolution does. The more people who get it, the more opportunity it has to mutate.

LizzieSiddal · 27/11/2021 21:35

*they told us we wouldn’t go back”

No they didn’t. They said we may have to go to plan B, which was more restrictions.

What worries me is how willingly people have accepted the idea of wearing a mask for the rest of their life potentially

Many eastern countries wear masks in public/crowed places because they’ve had to deal with other epidemics such as Sars. We in the west need to get used to it, wear a mask in a crowded place, wash your hands and get on with your life. It’s really not difficult or a hardship.

ihatebeinganadult · 27/11/2021 21:35

@Cripesitsthegasman19

I'm happy to wear a mask but if they try and reinstate WFH, they can shove that up their arses
This 100%, working from home broke me. I will never do that again
Zotter · 27/11/2021 21:36

I too am surprised that some people thought there would be no possibility of new restrictions. Even this govt have not denied whilst CoVid remains fairly widespread in the world the risk of a mutation developing that could evade current vaccines was still there. There also have been numerous newspaper articles on the possibility.

Hopefully in the coming days scientists will learn more how much, if any, resistance omitron has to current vaccines. I hope it will not be high resistance but important to take a precautionary approach until more is known. It’s crap but it can’t be ignored. And the CoVid pandemic has shown better to put the brakes on sooner than later to climb out of it.

WeirdArchitecture · 27/11/2021 21:37

labour created the fucking NHS you asshat, the tories tried to stop it.

eat that.
