Primary school children given the go ahead for the vax in Europe

Sky news just reported the EU has given the ok to vaccinate children aged 5-11.

I'm double jabbed and booked for my booster but no way is ds (9) having this jab. I'd never forgive myself if his heart was damaged by it. Obvs not announced in the uk YET!

I think it is a matter of time before this is authorised by the MHRA. Whilst many won’t want there children to be vaccinated, many will.

I expect many countries may require over 5’s to be vaxxed to travel next summer.

No they won't. Any more than they expected teenagers to be vaccinated this summer.

@PAFMO well they do actually. Teenagers are treated as unvaccinated adults in France unless travelling with a vaxed adult. Which wipes out exchanges or school trips. Also because the stupid UK covid pass isn't available for under 18s they can't even prove they are vaxed or have had Covid recently which means to go anywhere, restaurants, museums etc they have to take a test every couple of days.

Oh, right. Didn't realise. Ok.

As long as you can live with yourself if actual covid causes the exact same thing -which there is a higher likelihood of.
Dont you think if it were concern over heart issues then uk would be vaccinating (5-11) girls at least as the risk is even lower

My 10yo niece had it yesterday. Most EU countries will jab their over 5s. Be interesting to see what the UK decides. I also think it will become mandatory for travel etc.

40% of 5-11s in my county have had their first shot in the 3 weeks it's been available. They would be getting their second doses this week but because of Thanksgiving it'll be next week.

The vaccination rate in my town is higher, which isn't really surprising given that we have so many doctors living here.

Good-fingers crossed it will get the go ahead in the UK too and those who want their children to have it, can.

It obviously will come to the UK. The JCVI got ignored for 12 to 15s so it's clear we sidelined science, logic and thought some time ago.
Having said that, hopefully those parents who are concerned will simply stand firm and not be bullied or shamed into vaccinating their children.
I have no issue with people of any age getting vaccinated for anything as often as they want, but the aggression and, frankly, untruths, of the campaign with the Covid vaccine is extremely concerning.

Well quite. It's totally ridiculous. So is the fact that an under 18 can't get a Covid pass to show they have had Covid and/or been vaccinated (even those who are fully vaccinated due to vulnerability). When I emailed to complain about this I received a reply telling me the Covid pass is not available to under 18s. I knew this - that is exactly what I was complaining about!

At the moment in Canada unvaccinated people over the age of 12 can't travel by plane or train. No negative test or recovery proof permitted.

They just started vaccinating 5-11 year olds this week so I expect them to adjust the age range for travel to everyone over the age of 5 need to be vaccinated.

They plan to start vaccinating babies early next year 6 mths- 4 years

Then they will likely amend the rules to everyone over the age of 6 months will need a vaccination to travel.

You understand that your child is significantly more likely to contract myocarditis if he contracts Covid? And that either way, through vaccine or infection it is easily treated?

Thats what I'm expecting too.

Third vaccines will be mandatory for travel. As will vaccines for under 16s. That British kids can't prove due to the technology issues.

So parents and kids will stuck in the UK until the government stops dragging its feet, harmonises with the EU and addresses the gap in tech.

Of course the government may not want children to be educated in foreign lands with foreign experiences...

Theres no way I'd be repeatedly vaccinating my dc just to go on holiday, its unlikely it would just be a one off requirement

I’m in an EU country that is seeing a concerning surge in cases right now. The incidence in under 12s is over 900 nationally, some areas are at 2,000+. Which is alarmingly high. It’s what’s causing the high numbers and subsequent hospitalisations. The kids don’t get ill but go home and pass it on to family members, plus the staff at school who are exposed to a much higher viral load to start with.

Vaccines reduce transmission, so I welcome them in any age group, if they’ve been authorised and deemed safe.

@EileenGC yes, we had increased cases in school children for the last few months. It didn’t translate to higher hospitalisations in older groups because they have been vaccinated and are at lower risk of serious illness. Also, a recent study in the Lancet showed that there was no significant difference in household transmission between vaccinated and unvaccinated people. So I think we should just try to get boosters out to the vulnerable and stop worrying about case numbers.

I’m nearly 70 and didn’t go abroad until my very late teens. I remember being astonished at the quality of life in Europe. My perceptions were formed by footage of the dreary aftermath of the Second World War and the narrative that Britain and the British Empire was the most advanced and benign example of civilised life.
I was blown away by the quality of life in European countries, the food, the drink, the political discourse, the energy and interest in the future, compared to what I was used to at home. I feel now that we’re unfortunately slipping back into that post war mindset,.

Canada are starting to do 5 yrs +. My grand daughter is 4 and will have hers once she turns 5. All children at school have to wear masks all day too in Canada.

Young children in masks really upsets me. :(

Why does it upset you? Kids generally accept mask wearing far better than adults do. They're fine.

I hope they introduce the vaccine for younger children here soon. My 10yo will be first in line!
