Can anyone talk some sense about how dangerous this is or is it just the media over exaggerating?

Usually, as viruses mutate, they become weaker but more easily transmissible

I’m sure this is a myth invented in the 18th century.

ThistleTits · 27/11/2021 20:39

@fournonblondes

No idea but if we keep vaccinating just developed countries this will get worse and worse with the mutations.
I could not agree more.
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/11/2021 20:47

They haven’t said anything about whether this variant makes people more seriously ill. It might be weaker? I’d be perfectly happy with a more infectious virus that basically just causes a sniffle because it’s so weak.

^^
This is what I’ve always understood that viruses do. They become “weaker” in the sense of how ill they make you, so they can transmit to more people rather than killing the host. So in a sense weakness makes them stronger..

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/11/2021 20:48

I do think we need to share vaccines more. No one is safe until we all are.

“Their symptoms were so different and so mild from those I had treated before,” said Dr Coetzee, a GP for 33 years who chairs the South African Medical Association alongside running her practice.

On November 18, when four family members all tested positive for Covid-19 with complete exhaustion, she informed the country’s vaccine advisory committee.

She said, in total, about two dozen of her patients have tested positive for Covid-19 with symptoms of the new variant. They were mostly healthy men who turned up “feeling so tired”. About half of them were unvaccinated.

“We had one very interesting case, a kid, about six years old, with a temperature and a very high pulse rate, and I wondered if I should admit her. But when I followed up two days later, she was so much better,” Dr Coetzee says.

Dr Coetzee, who was briefing other African medical associations on Saturday, made clear her patients were all healthy and she was worried the new variant could still hit older people – with co-morbidities such as diabetes or heart disease – much harder.

“What we have to worry about now is that when older, unvaccinated people are infected with the new variant, and if they are not vaccinated, we are going to see many people with a severe [form of the] disease,” she said.

South African demographics are very different from those in the UK. Only about six per cent of the population are over the age of 65. This means that older individuals who are more vulnerable to the virus may take some time to present.

@Parker231

Would have been so much better if mandatory mask wearing hadn’t been made optional earlier.
I’m not sure if the screenshot you put will get included in the quote..

I know it doesn’t make a huge difference really as it will be at some point in the next couple of days I assume, but the government have said, and underlined in that pic from Twitter, “to be compulsory”.
Is there a date for this? In the press conference he just said Javid would provide more details in the coming days.

I'm of the opinion it's time they just let us get on with it. Clearly everything we pass the danger of one variant another is going to appear. Covid is not going away it's now a part of life. Doesn't matter if your vaccinated or not new strains will occur that beat the vaccine. Time we just get up and carry on. Personally I'm against going back to any restrictions as where does it stop. The economy can't handle another lockdown so we need to just get on with it.

puppeteer · 27/11/2021 21:09

The red list action was admirably quick, but still in the end pointless.

And now we have masks back. But only in some settings.

This is all theatre. Nothing of substance is being done.

If the variant really is more transmissible, they will do basically nothing to slow the spread.

Thought this graph was an interesting comparison!

@RedToothBrush
Cases have been identified in Australia now which still has limited
travel options to and from, a Belgian who has never been to
Southern Africa, a case in HK in someone who was in a hotel
room opposite someone who had it and 600 people from flights from SA to Amsterdam are stranded pending further tests
because 61 have covid (I somehow doubt that they got on that flight without lots of the usual precautions first) and they are worried its Omincrom.

Further questions, how many of the 61 are fully vaccinated? Netherlands and many countries do not require tests for fully vaccinated.

bumbleymummy · 27/11/2021 22:20

Just shows how ridiculous vaccine passports are. Why are we exiting people from testing just because they’ve been vaccinated when we know that vaccinated people can still contract and transmit the virus?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/11/2021 22:54

I thought the latest review of data found masks cut 53% off transmission?

The "data" on this often differs, but does anyone really think it's a coincidence that this was released just as the latest plans were being made?

Dnaltocs · 27/11/2021 23:08

Just can’t believe some don’t wear masks. I live in the South of England about an hour from London and very few wear masks in the streets.
What I have noticed is the more expensive the supermarket the more likely I am to see staff and customers wearing masks.
In ‘L’ no masked customers or staff.
‘A’ seldom see mask wearers.
In ‘W’ most wearing masks.
M&S most wearing masks.
‘B’ (chemist) most wearing masks.
Why are some not looking at the statistics and the regularity of funerals.

Exactly! I caught Covid a month after having my second jab!

Outside? That’s not surprising surely.

But why would you? Outdoor mask-wearing has never been mandated, and outdoor transmission is pretty uncommon.

The fuck?

I was in M&S today and hardly anyone wearing a mask. Central London.

That's been debunked, it's more like 10%. John Burns-Murdoch on Twitter I think was among those that called it out as misinformation.
Tubsen · 27/11/2021 23:37

53% is probably a proper mask work properly, not the 100 for a fiver disposables from Amazon or fabric ones

No it's 10% for a good mask even:

Most people wear them in my M&S.

Mamanyt · 27/11/2021 23:56

It is causing some issues here in the USA. My dear friend's brother's lab just shut down as several fully vaccinated and boostered employees have breakthrough infections. Remains to be seen how sick they will get.

The solution is temporary patent waiver.
