AIBU : unvaxxed friend moaning about covid

UnicyclingBabies · 23/11/2021 23:33

My friend has covid. Her husband and her kids have covid. They are not seriously ill thank goodness, but they're feeling pretty rough and finding it hard and inconvenient to be stuck inside feeling unwell and have all the hassle of Test and Trace etc

Every day she posts on social media moaning about it. I get that it's not fun for her, but I know loads of people who've had covid (including some who were hospitalised) and none of them seemed to need to complain so publicly. The kicker is, she and all her family are unvaccinated. AIBU to feel irritated?

YANBU. She should have got the vaccine and so should her family.

RockinHorseShit · 24/11/2021 10:33

Meh, just reply

Yeah I hope you're better soon of course, but I struggle to have a lot of sympathy for you, as it was your choice not to get vaccinated, which no doubt means your Covid is worse than it needed to be 🤷‍♀️

But I'm a bitch & I've had my fill of covidiot antivaxxers lately

UnicyclingBabies · 24/11/2021 10:36

RockinHorseShit You see I do think that would be a shocking thing to reply! Yet it is pretty much what I am thinking. I guess you're just more honest than I am. I think it's partly that I think the public humiliation of receiving such a reply would be really harsh.

I have actually read an article this morning about stupid people having Covid parties on Italy hoping to catch it. On order to get a green card pass. The world has gone mad. If your friend is moaning and posting on FB she is on the mend. When my sister had it after 2 vaccinations she went quiet as felt too Ill to post.

UnicyclingBabies · 24/11/2021 10:39

caringcarer She's definitely not too ill to post! It's been 3 weeks of daily updates now.

The point about people not having sympathy with self inflicted illness,is: if you have a stroke, cardiac event,are diabetic loose a limb. You're not putting vulnerable people at risk by harming yourself. I worked many years for the NHS have friends who are medics, haven't heard of all the these vaccinated people dying.

RockinHorseShit · 24/11/2021 11:12

I'm way past caring about insulting antivaxxers to be honest, but I've seen some incredibly nasty & frankly batshit behaviour from long time once close "friends" who are in the camp of rabid antivaxxers. I've even seen them discussing that the vaccine infects people with & spreads the virus & that any celeb death in the papers that says "unknown illness" or similar is a covid vaccine death

If your friend is someone who is loud about her antivaxxers stance, then they deserve any shame they have coming their way. If they quietly made a personal choice & didn't bang on about it then I'd maybe calm my response into " oh what a shame, I'm sorry you feeling are so ill, I guess you know now why the vaccine is so important, I really hope you all get through this okay"

You've read about an Austrian, who worked over the border in Italy, attending a party (in Italy) hoping he would get Covid and therefore obtain a Green Pass. Idiot doesn't need one now, does he. The sud Tyrol region is the anti-vax centre of Italy (along with the area around Trieste) and that's why their numbers are so high. In fact, local laws came in yesterday and a couple of towns up there have been put into red zone lockdown. You're going to find a minority of idiots everywhere.
UnicyclingBabies · 24/11/2021 13:06

RockinHorseShit I actually agree with you, if they're being loud and spreading lies I think your kind of response is justified. I've lost all the batshit anti vax friends already as I used to politely question them which led to me getting blocked pretty fast!
To give my friend credit she has not to my knowledge posted on the subject of vax or tried to influence people online. She has just made a personal choice so I guess that counts in her favour.

wasthataburp · 24/11/2021 13:10

She would still have to deal with test and trace, and be in isolation if she was vaccinated.

It's nothing to do with being unvaccinated at all. She just likes a moan!

wasthataburp · 24/11/2021 13:12

@hopeful777

You aren’t unsympathetic towards someone who had a heart attack because they had a high fat, low exercise lifestyle; or to a person with lung cancer because of their smoking history. Why is it ok to think someone who chooses not to be vaccinated should be muted because of their life decision? The ‘vaccine’ is not a miracle cure and as far as I understood, we still live in a free society which gives each individual the right to choose what goes into their own body.

I wish anyone suffering from any illness the strength to overcome it and pray as a society we can move on from the effects of Covid without this divide being imposed on us between vaccinated vs unvaccinated

Very well said!
KaleJuicer · 24/11/2021 13:14

YANBU

ktel1 · 24/11/2021 13:15

Based on some of the posts I've read recently I think we may need to change the definition of the word Friend.

UnicyclingBabies · 24/11/2021 13:24

wasthataburp sure, but she would have been way less likely to catch it and give it to her family if she'd had the vax!

ktel I did acknowledge my behaviour is not that of a good friend; I realise it's made me see her differently.

ktel1 · 24/11/2021 13:26

UnicyclingBabies

Whatever she says or does is really none of your business friend or not

Heyvedge · 24/11/2021 13:28

I'm surprised people waste their time on the social media of someone that isn't that close to them and then wastes more time creating a thread on MN about them but this happens a lot on here

pineapplejuiceisyuck · 24/11/2021 13:31

@UnicyclingBabies

Because she chose not to take the simple action that would have provided meaningful protection to her and those around her from catching it.
YABU - having the vaccine doesn't mean you won't get Covid or can't pass it on.

I'm vaccinated. Had Covid. And passed it on.

UnicyclingBabies · 24/11/2021 13:31

ktel I'd have tobdisagree with that as she is posting daily about it and inviting a response Hmm

OP posts:
UnicyclingBabies · 24/11/2021 13:33

pineapplejuice it doesn't prevent, but reduces your risk of catching or transmitting it. It's not perfect but it provides the best protection we currently have.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 24/11/2021 17:12

OP, your friend can post whatever she likes on her own Facebook page, you of course can choose not to read it by taking advantage of the unfriend, unfollow, snooze options available. It really is that simple! 1 click of a button and you no longer need to get wound up by it

Fallagain · 24/11/2021 18:56

@ButtonSister

Being vaccinated reduces the chances of getting Covid, and the effect of the virus if you do get it - why do anti-vaxxers ignore this simple fact?
Many, not all anti vaxers, like to feel superior in intelligence or knowledge by believing lies spread about the vaccines. It makes them feel like they have one over on others.
SeasonFinale · 24/11/2021 18:58

@Heartdogs

Yabu and annoying. Why do you think she cannot complain about having covid and having to self isolate for 10 days?
Because she did actually have a choice to attempt to prevent getting it and chose not to.
MarbleQueen · 24/11/2021 19:04

She’d probably have got it anyway even if she had the vaccine.

OhMaria · 24/11/2021 19:05

It's like people are putting their fingers in their ears and chanting la la la when even the government tells you getting vaccinated doesn't stop you getting it. I know more vaccinated people who got it than non vaccinated, some quite badly despite getting the jab.

Onelifeonly · 24/11/2021 19:07

She would still have to deal with test and trace, and be in isolation if she was vaccinated.

No, you don't have to isolate if you are double jabbed and have contact with someone who has covid, even if you live with them.
