Masks back in Classrooms in secondary schools.

storminabuttercup · 02/11/2021 07:10

Our LEA have reintroduced masks in secondary schools, it's out first experience of this as DC us year 7. I'm absolutely not anti mask, DC willing wear one in shops etc and when moving about in school but is upset this morning about having to wear one all day, I'm guessing they will get used to it soon enough but I feel so sad about the whole situation, these kids have been through so much. It also makes me wonder if this is now the step before back to home learning.
I know we need to control the virus I'm not even complaining I'm just venting that this bloody thing is still here.

I meant isn't proof of its negation.

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2021 19:00

You wang on about wanting evidence for claims then apparently I'm 'needy' when I ask for yours?

Loathe to do the legwork...

MarshaBradyo · 02/11/2021 19:01

I do not want to bother with you ok?

Go do something else / annoy someone else.

ChristmasCovid · 02/11/2021 19:19

@trumpisagit

But we should have been contacted by test and trace to check we were double vaxed and to tell us to get a PCR. Otherwise what is the point of test and trace?
You will only be contacted if the person who has tested positive names you as a contact.
MrsHamlet · 02/11/2021 19:21

Ah @SapereAude.... that's a bit disappointing. I was hoping for ritual sacrifice.

trumpisagit · 02/11/2021 19:28

@ChristmasCovid
I was told by 2 people they had. So I arranged a PCR, but it makes me wonder what test and trace are actually doing...

REDHERO · 02/11/2021 19:31

@MarshaBradyo

Why are you so fixated Noble

Does being incorrect get to you?

You made an assertion couldn’t back it up with evidence now going on about needing something from me. Tough really. Move on.

I’m not entertaining your fixation and inability to give evidence.

This thread is like listening to primary school children arguing. He said, she said, etc etc

It's a bit sad really. But if you have nothing better to do with your time crack on.

REDHERO · 02/11/2021 19:33

Do any of you work or teach little children?

It appears some of the 'he said/she said' behaviours are rubbing off. It's mildly entertaining and I wonder if any of you ever just leave it. Having the last word syndrome is strong on this thread.

bumbleymummy · 02/11/2021 19:33

@noblegiraffe

You made an assertion couldn’t back it up with evidence

No, that was you. I don't think you understand that absence of evidence for a claim (which I didn't make) is proof of its negation (a claim which you did make).

But you claimed that the majority of children don’t develop antibodies after infection. Surely by this you were suggesting that they are therefore not immune and will therefore likely be reinfected? But there is no evidence that this is the case.
MarshaBradyo · 02/11/2021 19:37

Redhero it’s really not that important or worth quoting.

It’s stopped now anyway tg.

LilyMumsnet · 02/11/2021 19:38

Hi folks

This thread is turning into a bit of a spat - can we leave it there now? Thanks.

Rainuntilseptember15 · 02/11/2021 19:44

@FreshFreesias

I’m so glad that none of the children at the school next to me are wearing masks now. It’s so cruel. Imagine having to sit in lessons all day with your breathing impaired for an illness that will barely affect you.
A teenager at my school was in hospital with Covid very recently. Ok now fortunately.
noblegiraffe · 02/11/2021 19:45

But you claimed that the majority of children don’t develop antibodies after infection. Surely by this you were suggesting that they are therefore not immune

I don't know, are they? I know not developing antibodies after vaccination is a problem, and the epidemiologist said that infection in children should not be conflated with immunity.

So is lack of antibodies in children not an issue at all?

Greenmarmalade · 02/11/2021 19:48

If it’s any comfort, my children got used to masks really quickly and now don’t mind them at all.

bumbleymummy · 02/11/2021 20:01

But you haven’t provided any evidence that most of the ~75% children who have been infected haven’t developed antibodies. Most studies have shown that the majority of children do. I’m really not sure what your point/issue is tbh.

I think the original point I made was that if most children have already been infected, masks aren’t really going to make much of a difference- particularly when you see that cases rose in countries that did require masks and are now falling in England even without them.

CallmeHendricks · 02/11/2021 20:03

Back in July, when our HT came in to close our bubble due to one of the class having tested positive, there was a fair stampede of children in the direction of the cloakroom to get out their freshly-laundered, hitherto unused masks.
Didn't see anyone complaining of being muzzled.

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2021 20:04

But you haven’t provided any evidence that most of the ~75% children who have been infected haven’t developed antibodies

Do you agree with the epidemiologist that at least some of them don’t? Or are you claiming all 75% are immune anyway?

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 02/11/2021 20:05
@bumbleymummy have you heard of half term ? Strange cases fell once schools closed for a week. It's like schools aren't as Covid safe as everyone kept saying when staff would have liked a vaccine.
Agreed! Those magic school walls seem to be crumbling right now…

Mask wearing is very sensible until case numbers fall. It won’t be forever. Children in other countries manage it and so can our children.

bumbleymummy · 02/11/2021 20:18

I already said further up thread that some may not. The studies show that the majority do though which you seem to be contradicting without any evidence to support it.

Cases were starting to fall in some places before half term even though testing remained high. I guess we’ll see what happens this week now that they’re back.

borntobequiet · 02/11/2021 20:22

Does being incorrect get to you?

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2021 20:23

I already said further up thread that some may not.

So I'll restate my point about it being reasonable to reinstate mitigation measures until secondary pupils have had a chance to be vaccinated.

bumbleymummy · 02/11/2021 20:25

For everyone? Even though the majority are most likely immune? Why? How would it make a difference? You seem to be ignoring the fact that countries with mitigations still had an increase in cases.

noblegiraffe · 02/11/2021 20:26

For everyone? Even though the majority are most likely immune?

But you have already admitted that you can't tell who.

I'm assuming they are being reintroduced because infection rates are high and not on a whim.

MarshaBradyo · 02/11/2021 20:28

@borntobequiet

Does being incorrect get to you?
Oh why is that?

Do you want to stir things a bit for the sake of it I wonder.

Lob in, do your part.

MrsHerculePoirot · 02/11/2021 20:29

I would dearly love masks in classrooms. I never understood why they think corridors need them but not sat next to someone for a whole hour long lesson.

We have next to no ventilation other than small opening windows in some rooms, no CO2 monitors to check and from what I hear from schools that do have them no instructions or details as to what to do when they inevitably go off.

I don’t think it would be the step leading to remote teaching or lockdown, I think it would perhaps allow more students and teachers to stay in school which is what we all want I think.
