Are people just going out with symptoms now…?

Went out with DC and a friend this morning.
We started off in local soft play and went to a family pub for lunch.

The soft play was literally full of kids who more than half of them were coughing.
Adults were coughing too.

At first I thought I was just being a bit hyper vigilant, until my friend mentioned it to me and said she felt uncomfortable.

We headed to the pub for lunch and to our surprise, it was the same there only this time it was more adults coughing.

It wasn’t even the same people,

I know it’s that time of year and we have to expect colds etc, but surely if you’re coughing, with a continuous cough, during a pandemic, then you would stay at home… 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think if you’re freaked out by coughs and colds, stay home don’t expect everyone else to.

My dc have had coughs which have lasted almost 3 months in the past, there’s no way they could stay home (and Doctor’s have told us no need). As PP’s have said, you have no idea if people have tested negatively already. It’s like people have forgotten that other illnesses exist, beyond Covid. Health anxiety has, understandably, become an issue for so many, but expecting everyone else to mitigate their life and behaviour to pacify it is not the answer.

whymewhyme · 28/10/2021 22:55

Not every cough is covid

mrscee · 28/10/2021 22:58

I have a cough and it's a cold, I already had Covid last month. I'm still going to go out even with a cough.

Heartdogs · 28/10/2021 23:02

I cough all the time. All the time. I have asthma and have coughed my whole life. I feel so paranoid now because of people like you who think everybody who coughs should have stayed home.

Ifyoudontlikeitdosomethingelse · 28/10/2021 23:03

You must have a very understanding and patient boss, husband and children if you can stay locked away for weeks on end everytime your ill.

REDHERO · 28/10/2021 23:07

Lots of people cough and it isn't always covid or a cough that spreads, think COPD, asthma, general tickle, post cough recovery, smokers cough.

RobinPenguins · 28/10/2021 23:07

I’ve had a cough for 2 weeks. I’ve had a negative PCR and many, many negative LFTs. I don’t have covid. It could hang around for weeks more, tickly coughs often do for me. No fucking way am I staying at home all that time.

REDHERO · 28/10/2021 23:07

Yes, it must be a nightmare when people like the OP assume every little cough is covid. @Dandy008 not all coughs are covid!
REDHERO · 28/10/2021 23:09

@RollaCola84

My mum has an asthmatic cough and my partner's mum has had a permanent cough for almost ten years as a medication side effect. Shall we just nail them both into their houses ???
It would appear so to appease the covid police
NeedAHoliday2021 · 28/10/2021 23:09

We have covid in the house and are isolating abut no one is coughing. I wouldn’t go to soft play at the moment though as it’s a germ fest and dc haven’t got much immunity to anything after the last year.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 28/10/2021 23:17

I had that bad cold, only just recovered then got Covid 4 weeks ago. I’m not contagious any more but my cough is terrible. I’m paranoid when I go out because it sounds so bad. When I had Covid in 2020, I had a cough for four months and my Covid was worse this time so I’m expecting my cough to last even longer.

drpaddington · 28/10/2021 23:19

3 out of 4 of us have had coughs over the last week or so- all 3 had negative LFT's and PCR's.

Ironically the one without a cough tested positive on LFT today!

I expect most of those you saw just had a cough and have had negative PCR's. I expect some just aren't testing though- I have friends and colleagues who haven't tested despite having symptoms. Can't say I know all of their reasons for that but for some it's because they're worried about losing wages.

julieca · 28/10/2021 23:19

Not everyone is testing, even with symptoms.

itsallgoingpearshaped · 28/10/2021 23:23

It's cold season; coughs linger after the fact for quite some time.

Change in temperature is triggering asthma in many, which includes coughing
.
And if you've had covid, the cough can linger for weeks. It doesn't mean people still have it.

FFS

RollaCola84 · 28/10/2021 23:32

@REDHERO It took me months to persuade my mum to go for a much needed optician's appointment because she was worried about being told off, tutted at or otherwise judged for a cough which we categorically know isn't Covid.

I definitely didn't inherit my bolshy-ness from Mum. If OP is so concerned about people at soft play and pubs coughing then maybe she shouldn't visit soft play or pubs

Dandy008 · 28/10/2021 23:35

NO! We like going.

Then accept people may cough when you're there...

RollaCola84 · 28/10/2021 23:44

@Dandy008 but only if you've got the right to dictate who else is there based on your view of health ?

Kiduknot · 29/10/2021 00:05

I was ill last week and am perfectly fine now except for a lingering cough. Had a negative pcr last week too.

But yes there will also be the idiots out and about.

And we won’t know who falls into which category.

Madhairday · 29/10/2021 00:15

@Treblebass

I still think it’s disgusting covid or not. If I have a bad cough I stay at home.
Do you think people like me, with lung disease and the resulting chronic cough, are disgusting and should never go out? Gee thanks.
Silverswirl · 29/10/2021 00:18

My cough lasted 3 weeks after I had recovered from covid- was I meant to stay in for 5 weeks then?

Well, so does everyone else there, including the ones who are coughing. By all means, continue going if you think it's worth it. Just understand that you don't get to control who else is there or whether they have covid.

GobletofFiyah · 29/10/2021 00:45

Yes I think so. I've had to deal with it this week it's been really difficult an agency nurse turned up on shift with a cough to a ward of children having bone marrow transplants and chemotherapy treatments. The sickest children you can imagine then 6 hours into the shift they had a text that the pcr on Monday was positive.

They had been in contact with at least 8 patients, most of the parents on the ward, the staff room, we've had to keep the 8 patients in hospital because they're now isolating, the parents they came into contact with have had to go home to isolate because we can't take the risk so some parents have had to swap. All staff are being tested via pcr every 2 days for 14 days.

Bloody nightmare

Their response well I only had a pcr to rule it out as it's just a little cough, I couldn't afford to not work

It's beyond selfish but it's also incredibly dangerous

Then stop complaining about others there.

Allergies and acid reflux don’t make you cough that much you cannot even catch your breath. How dramatic of you. Are you allergic to oxygen?[/quote]
Ah but allergies affect my son's asthma a d he does cough so bad he can't catch his breath. An inhaler will improve it but he stills coughs and coughs and coughs.
He coughs all year round, sept-march it's usually down to colds (or having come in contact with a cat) then march-sept it's hay-fever, with some overlap.
I have a cough right now, but it's just a cold on top of the damage whatever I had at Christmas 19. I've had a pcr, it was negative. I'm also snotty with a slightly sore throat.
Like others have said don't make assumptions.
