Are people just going out with symptoms now…?

Went out with DC and a friend this morning.
We started off in local soft play and went to a family pub for lunch.

The soft play was literally full of kids who more than half of them were coughing.
Adults were coughing too.

At first I thought I was just being a bit hyper vigilant, until my friend mentioned it to me and said she felt uncomfortable.

We headed to the pub for lunch and to our surprise, it was the same there only this time it was more adults coughing.

It wasn’t even the same people,

I know it’s that time of year and we have to expect colds etc, but surely if you’re coughing, with a continuous cough, during a pandemic, then you would stay at home… 🤷🏻‍♀️

They have probably been tested and are negative
Don't be so judgemental

OliveTree75 · 28/10/2021 20:29

They are probably one of the many, many people who had tested negative and have a non covid cough.

Northernsoullover · 28/10/2021 20:30

I wouldn't inflict a cough on anyone. Covid or not.

Overthebow · 28/10/2021 20:31

It’s cold and flu season, if I stayed at home every time me or DC have a cough I’d never be out. Everyone who wants to be are jabbed now, time to get on with life.

HappyPumpkin81 · 28/10/2021 20:32

If I didn’t go out when either myself, or my child, had cold symptoms we would not leave the house between October and May.

FindingMeno · 28/10/2021 20:33

I'm coughing.
It's a post covid cough and I'm perfectly safe to be around now according to T&T.
I think its hard now to know whether you are being hyper vigilant if you notice coughs atm, or too lax if you assume they're all non- covid.

morechocolateneededtoday · 28/10/2021 20:33

Most people will test when they get first sign of symptoms then resume normal life when receive a negative result as long as they feel well.
You said it yourself - it is cold season. Cant expect everyone to stay home with a cold

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/10/2021 20:34

It’s winter, seriously everyone is sniffing or coughing. I think expecting everyone to isolate on and off throughout winter is unreasonable, and if you’re hyper sensitive to germs, soft play really isn’t the place for ya.

Nuttymonkey · 28/10/2021 20:34

Coughs can last week's, my Mum coughs every day due to some reflux thing or something but I've definitely noticed lots of people coughing and steer away from them, not only for not wanting to catch covid but I also don't want to feel rotten with a cold or irritating cough either. Wearing a mask in a shop in winter almost feels quite reassuring now everyone is coming down with colds and spluttering all over the place!

PinkWaferBiscuit · 28/10/2021 20:35

Of course people are going out with coughs. It's nearly November and almost everyone has a cold due to not catching any bugs last year. Are you honestly suggesting anyone who tests negative should still stay indoors??

Its half term and I'm fully intending on making the most of my time off from work despite having a cough.

I've tested negative and will probably still have the aforementioned cough next week. I can just imagine parents reactions if I said I was staying home instead of going back into the classroo (which will probably also still be full of coughing kids because well its the at time of year). Hmm

Bunn5 · 28/10/2021 20:35

I’ve noticed this too!

Personally, when I’ve recently had colds or a cough (that is confirmed as not Covid by a negative PCR), I steer clear of people and indoor places. It’s not fair to pass on germs especially in the current climate. It could result in someone having to test & isolate and we could all do with less of that!

Franca123 · 28/10/2021 20:36

We wouldn't have left the house for about 2 months if we were worried about coughs and colds. It's been constant. We test before we go anywhere out of the ordinary. I wouldn't do soft play if you're worried about germs! We avoid at the best of times.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/10/2021 20:37

I think there are two lots of people - those who have tested and come back negative and it’s just a virus and those who aren’t testing at all, full stop and potentially have Covid and just literally don’t give a shit. We live in South Norfolk and I think people here are starting to fall into the second category, judging by the community Facebook pages.

BluebellsGreenbells · 28/10/2021 20:37

I’ve just had covid - no cough whatsoever ever.

Totally agree with this!
bumblefeline · 28/10/2021 20:38

I have been coughing for ages now. Had a cough for months after covid. Then had this crappy bug that's been going around, my cough has lasted weeks. I should maybe not leave the house.

Treblebass · 28/10/2021 20:39

I still think it’s disgusting covid or not. If I have a bad cough I stay at home.

FindingMeno · 28/10/2021 20:39

I do think people are stopping testing now in larger numbers.

What's disgusting about it? You would probably be pretty pissed if your kids teachers didn't come in for weeks at a time at this point in the year when they caught all the lovely bugs their class inevitably gave them.
SeasonalNamechange · 28/10/2021 20:41

oh god, another one!!

YourThoughtsOn · 28/10/2021 20:41

Of course they haven’t tested properly. Everyone I know who “has a cold” are going about as normal because it’s just a cold - and definitely not covid. A few might have done a lateral flow but most people (as evident on mumsnet) do not understand about testing and not realise that a snotty nose might actually be covid.

So OP I agree with you

OliveTree75 · 28/10/2021 20:41

@Treblebass

But these are children who get coughs all the time. Should they stay at home everytime they get a cough too? If they are otherwise well there is no reason for children who have tested negative to stay home. Also like pop have said, if you want to avoid germs don't go to soft play in half term in cold season.
Dandy008 · 28/10/2021 20:42

Are you honestly suggesting anyone who tests negative should still stay indoors??

@PinkWaferBiscuit

Nope, not suggesting this.
I just think if you’re coughing, and I mean coughing so continuously that it’s blatantly obvious you’re unwell, then the most considerate thing to do is to stay at home. Covid or not.

so in the workplace who pays for all the lost wages then?
SkankingMopoke · 28/10/2021 20:42

There's a lot going about. DD1 caught the cough that was/is doing the rounds at school about 3.5 weeks ago. She was tested (negative), but is still coughing now. Are you suggesting I should have contained her in the house for the last 3.5 weeks to OP? The poor kid is prone to coughs, and would barely leave the house if she had to isolate for the entire time every cough lasted.
DH has since caught it, tested negative, and is back at work etc despite the coughing. I am just beginning to get snotty, so I suspect I will be next in line. We can't all remove ourselves from society until a common cold has run through the family (DD2 is currently unscathed).
