Are people just going out with symptoms now…?

Went out with DC and a friend this morning.
We started off in local soft play and went to a family pub for lunch.

The soft play was literally full of kids who more than half of them were coughing.
Adults were coughing too.

At first I thought I was just being a bit hyper vigilant, until my friend mentioned it to me and said she felt uncomfortable.

We headed to the pub for lunch and to our surprise, it was the same there only this time it was more adults coughing.

It wasn’t even the same people,

I know it’s that time of year and we have to expect colds etc, but surely if you’re coughing, with a continuous cough, during a pandemic, then you would stay at home… 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, they are.

Lots of staff in my workplace currently in with horrific coughs and “colds”; some with what they are calling the “flu” yet they have not had PCR’s

PinkWaferBiscuit · 28/10/2021 20:45

Nope, not suggesting this. I just think if you’re coughing, and I mean coughing so continuously that it’s blatantly obvious you’re unwell, then the most considerate thing to do is to stay at home. Covid or not.

So you are suggesting they stay indoors? You knwo not everyone at home has access to an outside space right? You're literally advocating people shut themselves away at home for weeks?

QueenofKattegat · 28/10/2021 20:45

I still think it’s disgusting covid or not. If I have a bad cough I stay at home

So you either don't work, or work somewhere that pays you for being off. Aren't you lucky!

It's getting boring now, all these faux shocked threads about people having a cough and sniffle and daring to crack on like we always have.

Bunn5 · 28/10/2021 20:49

The problem is that as a society (particularly pre-Covid), no one rests and gets fully better any more before returning to school/work/social life. It is the expected norm.

I actually disagree that children are sent to school with awful coughs & colds and are “perfectly well”. So many parents are too selfish to keep them at home to let them get properly well.

Priorities have changed in the last few decades. People are selfish & quick to carry on regardless.

Covid put a temporary stop to that thinking but as people get fed up and return to normalcy, the old style of carrying on while ill has returned.

@SkankingMopoke

There's a lot going about. DD1 caught the cough that was/is doing the rounds at school about 3.5 weeks ago. She was tested (negative), but is still coughing now. Are you suggesting I should have contained her in the house for the last 3.5 weeks to OP? The poor kid is prone to coughs, and would barely leave the house if she had to isolate for the entire time every cough lasted. DH has since caught it, tested negative, and is back at work etc despite the coughing. I am just beginning to get snotty, so I suspect I will be next in line. We can't all remove ourselves from society until a common cold has run through the family (DD2 is currently unscathed).
@SkankingMopoke

We all had that too. DS had to have antibiotics for his as he developed a chest infection :(

We all stayed in. We had negative PCR’s, but Covid isn’t the only illness we should prevent spreading to others.

In the pub this afternoon, one family, which consisted of 2 Adults and 3 kids, all were coughing.
The youngest child was the worst, she was retching with her cough.

My DD has an asthma cough, made worse bypostnasal drip. I can tell you she's had 3 PCRs since Sept 1st and twice weekly LFTs, all negative.

I'm not going to lock her inside, for a start I think fresh air is good for colds and coughs and secondly I have to keep my job to keep a roof over her head, so she has to go to school/holiday club/whatever I need to work, with her cough.

AtlanticCityProof · 28/10/2021 20:51

I had Alpha and have been coughing since January, particularly in shopping malls and department stores.
Having said that, I think the fact that Delta can be more like a cold hasn’t been particularly well publicised and some people are going out with symptoms that they assume aren’t significant.

PollyRae16 · 28/10/2021 20:52

I've just gotten over a 2 week cold with the most horrendous cough - doctor said it's something a lot of people are getting. Multiple PCRs and LFTs - all negative so no I wouldn't stay at home but was vigilant in wearing a mask and sanitising my hands.

PollyRae16 · 28/10/2021 20:53

My ds also has asthma so is likely to cough all throughout winter. Can't exactly keep him inside the whole time

BLACKTUESDAY1 · 28/10/2021 20:54

I have long covid and have been coughing for months. Should I not be allowed out???

BabycakesMatlala · 28/10/2021 20:54

I came on to say the same as @TheHalloweenWitchGhost - if you have a DC with cough variant asthma, you can hear it's their asthma cough, and that it's relieved by inhalers. When my child had an actual Covid cough, it only lasted an hour and we still had him PCR tested as we could hear it wasn't asthma.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 28/10/2021 20:55

I’ve had a cough for 12 weeks now. Not sure my employer (or service users) would be impressed if I took 12 weeks off work.
One or other of my children have had a cold and/or cough since September. We keep the local covid test centre in business. Always negative. We’re not staying at home for the whole winter.

SeasonalNamechange · 28/10/2021 20:56

@Dandy008 'covid isn't the only illness we should prevent spreading to others'

are you for real????

SkankingMopoke · 28/10/2021 20:57

@Dandy008 she is otherwise perfectly well in herself. Even when she first caught it, you wouldn't have known she was ill except the cough. She had a snotty nose upon waking and a bit of a sore throat, but looked well and was sprightly (she even managed to smash a PB in her sport last weekend, so clearly not unwell!). Your DC obviously felt very unwell in themselves if they required antibiotics, so we are not comparing like with like. You can not insist functioningly well people hide away for weeks on end if they've tested negative.

BLACKTUESDAY1 · 28/10/2021 20:58

There are lots of reasons for a cough, asthma, COPD, long covid, GERD etc that aren't passed on to others. Stop assuming everyone who coughs is spreading bugs around

beentoldcomputersaysno · 28/10/2021 20:58

OP, I should imagine it's a mix - those with coughs/colds and those who 'know' it's just a cold/cough so don't test, with a small smattering who may know they have covid but don't care about spreading.

Treblebass · 28/10/2021 20:59

@QueenofKattegat

All for people cracking on but there’s a difference between “a cough” and a non stop, hacking cough where you don’t even come up for air.

Reminds me of even pre covid when you get stuck next to said person in a theatre or somewhere similar. Filthy!!

I’ve worked as a support worker throughout covid, and I absolutely wouldn’t be in work with an infectious cough. Covid or not. Thanks.

Dandy008 · 28/10/2021 21:01

Exactly the point I am trying to make!!

@Dandy008

Non infectious coughs generally don’t make you cough so much you can’t come up for air.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/10/2021 21:02

@Treblebass

I still think it’s disgusting covid or not. If I have a bad cough I stay at home.
I cough because of allergies and acid reflux. What do you think I should do, stay at home indefinitely?
BLACKTUESDAY1 · 28/10/2021 21:03

I AM coughing like that and it's long covid. I have had it for months. I am NOT contagious. There will be others. Stop assuming !!

SickAndTiredAgain · 28/10/2021 21:03

A cough could last weeks, well past when the person actually is perfectly well.

Treblebass · 28/10/2021 21:04

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

Allergies and acid reflux don’t make you cough that much you cannot even catch your breath. How dramatic of you. Are you allergic to oxygen?

Franklin12 · 28/10/2021 21:07

I do like the idea of it being acceptable to wear a mask when you have a cold or a cough.

Having said that thanks to the old guy coughing his guts up behind me in the supermarket and getting far too close

So you know how bad my hay fever is do you? Sometimes one I’ve started coughing my throat catches and I cough until I’m nearly sick.

I’ll treat your pathetic dig about oxygen with the contempt it deserves.
