Are we locking down again?

And if so will they do more of the furlough and shutting things down?

Schools?

Please No!

I’m reading that this might be happening.

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Wait til the docs pushing for lockdowns ask the public to sign their petitions against privatisation.

wolfstarling · 20/10/2021 17:32

We are being prepped for restrictions. The same formula as before - wait for public opinion to sway, when they see the Government are acting too late.

Bizawit · 20/10/2021 17:32

@Iggly

Exactly this. Half of this years problem is because of restrictions last year (I.e pressure from flu infections) so I wish people would stop banging on about lockdown to prevent pressure on the NHS

It would have been worse if we didn’t lockdown. The problem is we left lockdown a week too late or did you miss that story?

Counterfactual. You have no idea whether that’s true or not.
User135644 · 20/10/2021 17:46

Lockdown inevitable b by Christmas if they don't put mitigation measures in now, whether it be vaccines/masks/social distancing.

The hospitals simply won't be able to function by December otherwise.

User135644 · 20/10/2021 17:47

It might be too late anyway, the government have sleepwalked us into this.

bluetuesdayy · 20/10/2021 17:47

@User135644 give it a week. Plan B will come. Lockdown after Xmas perhaps, worst case.

I’m not convinced but lots of posts saying this. Bit depressing

Initially perhaps

However a lot of the current problems are being caused by the fact that they didn't lift restrictions in June as per the roadmap. They lost their nerve.

bluetuesdayy · 20/10/2021 17:51

@MarshaBradyo it's very depressing. My postponed wedding is 4th Dec. Hoping we can at least have a small group.

User135644 · 20/10/2021 17:52

@RosesAndHellebores

We have to learn to live with it and accept that disease kills. We cannot afford more furlough or another lock down.
I don't think the government could care less about the loss of life though, that's not the issue.

The brutal fact is if the hospitals can't function then society can't function. We've been fully open since July because the hospitals can function (just about at this point with winter due to start in earnest and cases exploding), but you can't ignore restrictions when ambulances are queued round the block and can't get patients into hospitals. Ambulance wait times are bad enough now.

I’m not in the same space I think we’ll ride it through

I guess we’ll find out but I really hope not

bluetuesdayy · 20/10/2021 17:54

@MarshaBradyo I actually think if we hold our nerve and don't lockdown etc cases would fall mid November onwards and perhaps increase again at Christmas.

Lockdown ensures another peak at some point so doesn't really make sense.

The problem is the Plan B measures will be half hearted (and should have come in start of autumn term anyway). They'll end up on plan G before more and more restrictions come in.

Make the most of the next few weeks.

Me too. I think it’s hold nerve time and going by conference they’re doing this.

I listened to Pollard this am which pulled me back from some of the more depressing stuff

herecomesthsun · 20/10/2021 17:57

Well, if we are getting into the hypothetical, we might not have needed a lockdown, or such a long one, if the advice from scientists had been followed earlier regarding a short circuit breaker in September 2021.

As regards flu, I am sure that the CMOs at any rate (if not the politicians) carefully thought through the pros and cons of lockdown and the risks of the situation in January 2021 with over 1000 deaths/ day and the need to stem a worse disaster outweighed the likely risk of an increase in flu cases this year.

We do at least have the vaccines and hopefully the situation over the winter will be a lot better than it otherwise would have been.

There's some easy wins though. Mandate masks on public transport and in schools - that'll help for starters. Really push forward with flu jabs/boosters/Covid jabs for those eligible.

Encourage home working again, which they'll be reluctant to do after months of trying to cajole everyone back into the office.

Do the above now and through the rest of the year and we could avoid shutting down hospitality again come December/January.

puppeteer · 20/10/2021 18:05

People need to start taking some responsibility personally though.

People say mandate masks. But what about everyone that is at risk wearing FFP3s?

People say encourage home working, but it might be better to simply not make that extra trip to the shops at the weekend.

Or perhaps if your kids get a bit sick, keep them home and take time off just in case.

It’s not all about government.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 20/10/2021 18:07

No. Not even plan B. Stop being dramatic.

Remmy123 · 20/10/2021 18:08

@puppeteer I agree!!

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 18:11

I agree too

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/10/2021 18:13

It would be interesting to see the balance on that, @MercyBooth. The resistance to charging among medics is by no means universal, and considering the money they stand to make I'm not sure there won't be a swing

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 20/10/2021 18:29

I hope we do bring back mask obligation, distancing, WFH and if necessary lockdown. It looks to me like we tried letting the “great” British public take responsibility for themselves but they clearly didn’t care enough - so here we are - rising rates across the board.

Disclaimer: I got covid this week and feel like shite warmed up, hence my anger…

But it is about messaging. The government have given a get back to normal/get back to the office advice since the summer and people have.

Are you angry at yourself for catching covid? Or just angry at other people for spreading it?
puppeteer · 20/10/2021 18:57

Actually the government has been saying to remain cautious, and act with responsibility.

Even Javid was being far less cavalier than many of us expected, and some of us hoped.
