I feel like the media conditioning us for plan b.
Wonder what plan c is.

France is interesting case and hopefully they don't get a bad 5th wave

CrunchyCarrot · 20/10/2021 07:23

A further lockdown shouldn't be needed due to Covid, I personally feel we are over the worst, but with the caveat that there could be other illnesses that put pressure on the NHS and might trigger one this winter.

We now have 93.6% of the adult population with antibodies against SARS-COV-2. That's a very high amount. Plus 86% of the over 12s have had one dose of vaccine, 78% are fully vaccinated. There's only so much we can do. The virus seems to be fairly settled on the Delta variant as the dominant one, the vaccines are effective against this to a large degree. The infections occurring should become less severe in most people unless you are unlucky enough not to be able to make a sufficient immune response. We're heading in the right direction, overall.

What we do still have a terrible problem with is the ever-increasing backlog of operations and treatments that were postponed. That means even a small amount of increases of cases of anything contagious could have a severe knock-on effect. We are reaping the effect of neglect of NHS funding and having sufficient staffing levels now. This country is really not in a good state, it's very worrying.

Absolutely this!!

@Lostinacloud

Yep *@edisonbulb*, here it comes. It will now build and build and build until the majority are desperate for anything to save us going into lockdown and school closures again and so welcome in the vaccine passport.

Maybe it’s a bit too cynical but perhaps the uk needed the case rates to rise in order to introduce the passports?
France introduced them to all but force better vaccine uptake. The uk don’t have that issue but do want the vaccine passports. If you think about it, they’ve let it spread since July and especially around schools so the percentage of the population that have now caught it and arguably become immune is higher than ever before. This could mean that when the vaccine passport is introduced, less and less people will be left to catch it and therefore cases will naturally start to go down. However, it appears as if that was due to the introduction of the vaccine passport Hmm

Yes so many have had it and also agree with Warher earlier on holding nerve.

Holding this in reserve means something can be done to mollify public. I don’t think masks or passports will do much at this stage but wfh switch is harsh for some businesses. Many just got back in Sept,

SapereAude · 20/10/2021 07:30

covidtracker.fr/

There's the link to @usuallydormant's (thank you! Brew) data source. It can be seen in English too. Numbers look relatively stable and of course the hospital capacity being much better than the UK must, in any case, be reassuring.

Dentistlakes · 20/10/2021 08:07

@Foghead

Plan b should be get everyone’s underlying health as well as can be. Get blood tests, test for vitamin levels (especially d) And other markers for good health, promote healthy eating and get people moving. In fact, that should have been plan a as it seems that vaccine or no vaccine, underlying health is still the biggest factor.
Absolutely. We should have been using the past year to take personal responsibility and get ourselves in the best physical health we can. Lose weight, improve our fitness, build our mental health coping strategies and boost our resilience. There should have been a campaign and support from the government to facilitate this, not a free for all to stuff our faces and pile on weight.
zafferana · 20/10/2021 08:19

We don't need more lockdowns.

We don't need vaccine passports.

We don't need to enforce masks in all indoor locations.

What we need to do is roll out third doses to all over-50s MUCH FASTER THAN WE ARE DOING and make the vaccine available to all 12-15-year-olds at walk-in centres.

Scotland had a spike in infections when DC returned to school in August. Since then, numbers have fallen, mainly because they got their shit together with rolling out to teens as soon as the govt gave them the green light. England needs to pull it's bloody finger out. Around here, infections are almost all DC. It isn't bloody brain surgery!!!!

Delatron · 20/10/2021 08:25

There needs to be some serious and speedy action now with regards to boosters and 12-15 jabs.

So maybe a public messaging campaign. Mass vaccination centres again. Just something. People will be sitting around waiting for GPS to get in touch.

We need to go back to what we did in Feb/March as the urgency is there.

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 08:27

I don’t know the process for booster me but I think high numbers and recent media stories will motivate some to get it

Thewiseoneincognito · 20/10/2021 09:15

@3asAbird

Plan C will be the January lockdown when the numbers are a mess through inaction, poor adherence to Plan B and festive socialising. The next two and a half months will just get progressively worse to a point where we have no other option but to lockdown.

AY4.2 variant is starting to get some traction in the news cycle so I expect this is the one to watch and could have implications that eventually trigger Plan C.

Plan B must be implemented now before we get to a point where the mitigation’s will have no effect. We do not want to experience a brutal winter.

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 09:17

I’d like to recommend listening to Andrew Pollard this am to anyone feeling a bit nervy about lockdowns and reading some posts on here.

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 09:21

He talks about data being higher due to community cases, the new variant and rising immunity

It’s a nice change to some more heightened stuff out there and on here

Echo40 · 20/10/2021 09:22

But Boris is differing on plan b.
Kids even in outbreak schools are told wear masks in the corridor not classrooms.
Public transport full of the masksless and extra full due to the driver shortage.

I would really hate to see another lockdown however can't see how we would help matters unless we

Update symptoms
Bring in new isolation policies for same household.
Surge vaccinate 12 to 15 and groups 1-9 as fast as possible.
A extended half term may help schools to cope better.

Thewiseoneincognito · 20/10/2021 09:26

Head of NHS confederation Matthew Taylor calling for ’Plan B plus’ to include face masks, wfh and unnecessary indoor gatherings discouraged.

zafferana · 20/10/2021 09:29

Do you have a link @MarshaBradyo? Is he a podcast, on the radio?

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 09:30

I can see why he’s calling for it.

But listening to people this am I’m not convinced it will go ahead yet. A blunt no, which could obviously change. But someone like Pollard will have a better grip on data.

marieantoinehairnet · 20/10/2021 09:32

I don't like the attitude Kwazi has about getting back to life, when it quite clear we're not, it's pig headed and immoral

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 09:32

@zafferana

Do you have a link *@MarshaBradyo*? Is he a podcast, on the radio?
Yes R4 at about 7.50am

If you go to BBC Sounds and go to that time

Then Kwasi said no to plan b yet - at about 8.10 I think

zafferana · 20/10/2021 09:35

Ah okay, I had it on in the background, but clearly wasn't really listening! Thanks

madmomma · 20/10/2021 09:36

They Caan fuck straight off with vaccine passports and excluding teens from anything.

Thewiseoneincognito · 20/10/2021 09:38

news.sky.com/story/covid-19-enforce-plan-b-restrictions-immediately-or-uk-risks-stumbling-into-winter-crisis-pm-warned-12438888

Kwasi is speaking as business secretary, he will be very careful to not further weaken confidence in economic stability so I don’t pay much attention to what he says right now.

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 09:40

NHS Confederation isn’t close enough to have full data nor will they be advising.

bluetuesdayy · 20/10/2021 09:42

@Thewiseoneincognito you could argue that almost all indoor gatherings are unnecessary -it's not the minor restriction he seems to think that would be.

zafferana · 20/10/2021 09:42

I don't think the govt will do anything that means furlough or business support payments will need to come back. If they tell people to WFH again and not go to crowded indoor settings that will damage thousands of businesses, who will then demand support again. Rishi is now trying to help the economy get back on its feet, not spend more billions on handouts. I think the NHS can bleat all it wants about restrictions, but Boris is a libertarian, he hated imposing restrictions and won't want to do it again when we've just opened up. Sajid announced yesterday that the online vaccine booking system WILL include 12-15s soon so they can get vaxxed over half-term, so I think that's their plan.

GoldenOmber · 20/10/2021 09:42

@Thewiseoneincognito

Head of NHS confederation Matthew Taylor calling for ’Plan B plus’ to include face masks, wfh and unnecessary indoor gatherings discouraged.
If the public start believing that “our NHS” now wants to shut them up in their houses every time hospitals are busy, it’s going to erode public views of the NHS faster than any Tory pro-privatisation campaign could ever hope to manage in its wildest dreams.
