DD positive on LFT

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 08:36

DD has come back positive on a LFT. She's only 7. .everyone else is negative.

PCR tests have been ordered but what are the chances DDs test is a false positive? I'm really hoping she doesn't actually have it

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/10/2021 08:38

It's highly likely she has it, LFTs very rarely show false positives. Plus she's presumably in school and mixing with lots of other children.

Karwomannghia · 19/10/2021 08:38

It’s possible, I’ve had one, but it’s more likely to be right. How come you were testing her?

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 08:42

I was testing as I have a hospital appointment tomorrow that I really can't miss.

OP posts:
HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 08:43

So I tested all of us just to be on the safe side as obviously I need people round to watch the kids etc (not now of course)

DaxtheDestroyer · 19/10/2021 08:45

In our experience, the LFTs are accurate, even with the recent shitshow of testing which has meant many many people have had negative PCRs when they should have had positive.
Can you book yourself in for a PCR today as well and hope you get the results in time? Or is the problem that you will have to stay at home with her?

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 08:46

I'll have to stay home with her as I'm a single mum.

Poor DD Sad

OP posts:
Chewbecca · 19/10/2021 08:47

Super unlikely unfortunately.

Frazzled2207 · 19/10/2021 08:47

Overwhelmingly likely to be a true positive.
If you’re negative though that’s all that matters for the hospital appointment? Assuming you’re double vaccinated?

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 08:54

@Frazzled2207 yeah, I am double vaccinated but unfortunately I'm a single parent so I need to be with DD which means I'll have to rearrange my hospital appointment

OP posts:
Karwomannghia · 19/10/2021 08:57

When I had my false positive and went for the pcr, they asked me to take a lft at the same time to check validity. That one came back negative and all others.
Whereas dd’s true positive was dark and repeated tests all the same. Same with my recent true positive.
So you could do a repeat test, make sure she hasn’t eaten or drunk anything for a while before. Still do the pcr but if you wanted to check again you could do it again.

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 09:03

@Karwomannghia
DDs was quite a faint line. I've no LFTs left though. Hopefully the PCR will arrive quickly.

JanglyBeads · 19/10/2021 09:03

If she’s had a positive on any test she has to isolate by law. The only thing that can overturn that is a negative PCR taken within 48hours of the positive LFT.

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 09:11

@JanglyBeads I know. I was just hoping she was really negative as I hate to think of her being unwell with it. I've had it so I know how it feels.

OP posts:
Frazzled2207 · 19/10/2021 09:19

I’d go out and get another lft asap. Most chemists have them.
If that’s positive then unfortunately you will have to stay at home with her

JanglyBeads · 19/10/2021 09:26

I was responding more to posters such as @Karwomannghia and now @Frazzled2207.

A negative LFD now won’t make any difference either to her having to isolate or the likelihood or her having Covid.

She’ll probably feel much less ill with it than you did OP. So sorry it overturns your plans though.

Frazzled2207 · 19/10/2021 09:29

whilst I agree, there are stories about false positives occuring after drinking orange juice etc.
The OPs daughter is overwhelmingly likely to be positive but given the importance of her hospital appointment I'd be doing another LFT.

Karwomannghia · 19/10/2021 09:31

Nothing I said negates that. But doing another lft test - positive - game over; negative- some hope but hold tight until results of pcr.

HerRoyalWitchyness · 19/10/2021 09:44

I cant get to a chemist. I dont drive so can't even leave her in a car. I'm just going to have to hold out until the PCR arrives.

For nose only LFTs?
JanglyBeads · 19/10/2021 10:07

OK, apologies.

We don’t know if the OP used a nose only LFD.

You could order LFDs by post - next day delivery. However another LFD wouldn’t particularly help you in this situation.

FAQs · 19/10/2021 10:10

Daughter had a strong positive LFT last week and a negative PCR the day after.

Iggly · 19/10/2021 10:22

The advice now is to isolate if you have a positive LFT.

Have you seen the stories about that lab messing up with PCRs? I shudder to think how many more there are.

Mammaaof · 19/10/2021 10:24

I had positive lft and 3 negative PCR tests after

DaxtheDestroyer · 19/10/2021 16:27

Yes, there's been an issue at a lab failing to process PCRs properly, it was in the news on Friday. As a result, many thousands of people have been asked to retest if their PCR was within the last week - any earlier than that and it's too late basically. The new nose only LFTs have been found to be much more accurate than originally thought. Even a faint positive is a positive.
