Teen sick after vaccine

Are other people's kids OK?

Mine can't get out of bed after his vaccine on Monday.

He's been exhausted with a headache and got a temperature. Still not out of bed. He's missed two days of school already.

He’s probably got Covid. Have you tested

LadyCatStark · 13/10/2021 14:31

DS had a headache and felt generally unwell. He had it last Thursday and was off school on Friday along with about 10 other classmates. He was OK by Saturday though.

Umbro02 · 13/10/2021 14:38

Lots of DS's classmates are off too. Immediately after Monday when they had the vaccine.

It could be Covid - but it's more likely to be the vaccine.

I haven't tested him tbh as it was obvious to me that it was a result of the vaccine. I'll test him and see.

As with adults, you will likely feel rough the day after the vaccine. Paracetamol helps a lot.

Much better than a long bout of Covid though. Maybe test him for that - there is plenty of Covid in schools (due to the delays in vaccinating the pupils).

Cloudbaser · 13/10/2021 14:51

Yes my dd had a thumper of a headache for 2 days and felt wiped out. Bounced back very quick but I was surprised how much it knocked her (paracetamol didn't cut it so just had to slog it out).

Vallmo47 · 13/10/2021 14:52

No symptoms other than a sore arm.

AlexaShutUp · 13/10/2021 14:53

Could be the vaccine but equally could be covid. It's rife in schools at the moment.

If lots of his friends are unwell, I'd say that covid is more likely. Only a couple of 16yo dd's friends were ill after the jab, but lots of them have been unwell with covid.

AlexaShutUp · 13/10/2021 14:54

It needs to be a pcr test that you do BTW. The lateral flow ones really aren't reliable.

BlueJag · 13/10/2021 14:56

Do test him. Sounds like Covid. We just had what started as a cold and ended as Covid. Poor soul. He'll recover in a week but it's unpleasant.

choccohoopz · 13/10/2021 15:01

I reacted like this to the vaccine, perfectly normal and pretty common. I had covid a while back and (completely anecdotally speaking) the vaccine seems to hit us that have had it a bit harder. Hope she feels better soon OP, I was knocked out for 3 days and then absolutely fine on the 4th.

choccohoopz · 13/10/2021 15:01

He*

Chocachocaholic · 13/10/2021 15:02

Don't be fooled. My daughter had the vaccine 2 weeks ago and had what we thought were side effects only to be confirmed as covid 2 days later with a pcr test as she was vomiting which is apparently a symptom now. Wiped her out for a whole week

Umbro02 · 13/10/2021 15:03

I've just done an LFT and it's negative.

Don't want to drag him to a test centre to do a PCR. He's really ill in bed - it has to be the vaccine. He came down ill that evening - same as lots of other kids in his year.

HuckleberryJam · 13/10/2021 15:05

I felt ill for about 24 hours after jab 1 of AZ. Fine after jab 2.
Both dv felt OK after jab 1 pfizer. A friend's dd felt ill after jab 2 of pfizer for a short while

duckme · 13/10/2021 15:07

My 16 year old daughter was really unwell after her vaccine. Which makes me a little concerned that the 12-15 year olds will be made to have their vaccines in school. I'd be much happier if they were given the same opportunity as everyone else to book an appointment at the time and place of their choosing to have their vaccine.

yikesanotherbooboo · 13/10/2021 15:13

It could be the vaccine but assuming it was Pfizer it was unusual to have significant side effects after the first dose. Bearing in mind several of the young people are I'll it is much more likely that there is a virus going round.

RevolutionRadio · 13/10/2021 15:14

I felt ill after both my vaccines. Booked in for a booster on Sunday night so hope I'll be ok for work on Monday.

AlanisMorningShed · 13/10/2021 15:34

My ds was ill after his vaccine too. He did have Covid after all, negative lft's though, positive PCR because he had a fever.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 13/10/2021 15:38

I've had three Pfizer vaccines and the second and third were both awful with flu like side effects and even a temperature, the first however I just had a sore arm.
I have heard people who have felt rough after their first though so could well be the jab.

Remmy123 · 13/10/2021 15:41

My nephew has it and has been off for a week and cannot get out of bed. Sounds a lot worse than covid.

alloalloallo · 13/10/2021 15:43

Both my girls were poorly after their vaccines.

They came down with fluey symptoms that evening, lasted a couple of days and then it all suddenly vanished.

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 13/10/2021 15:44

There’s sneer to your question then

“Loads are off”

I would think that, assuming the OPs DS had his vaccination at the same time as all his peers, it’s more likely the vaccine than covid if so many of them suddenly felt ill that evening.
Declutterclogs · 13/10/2021 15:55

Mine was poorly for about 2 days after the 1st pfizer and 3 days after the 2nd with temperature, chills, headache, general body aches. Both times it started in the evening after having the jab mid morning
